This Martin custom shop 0-28VS is built from Carpathian Spruce and Amazon Rosewood, and represents the cream of the crop that comes out of the Martin Guitar factory. It is incredible how much tone they were able to pack into such a little body. The basses are warm and full, betraying the fact that this is not a large body guitar. Trebles and mids blend perfectly with a little top end shimmer. Blues and ragtime feel right at home on this guitar, but it handled more modern pieces with beauty and grace. This is a perfect guitar for intimate playing sessions, or joining up with the banjo and washboard.

Wayne Henderson is a luthier who needs little introduction, known as he is the world over for building some of the finest pre-war style guitars. This D-28 in Red Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood is the bluegrass wet dream. All the power to punch through an instrument-heavy jam session, or take on the softer side and it fingerpicks beautifully. The voicing Wayne achieves, as always, is lovely. It is warm and has a great boom chuck. Henderson guitars never hang around the shop long, so get this one while it’s still here!

This guitar, the Rainbird, is one of John Soderlund’s unique multiscale guitars. With it’s 25.5″ to 26.5″ scale length spread and being built in Wenge and European Spruce, it has a firm, yet supple, throaty voice that holds well in a variety of tunings. The combination of Wenge back and sides with Wild Olive bindings and a Matsuda inspired rosette really make this one pop, visually speaking, and the extra tension in the bass strings makes it possible to tune even down to a low B with good clarity. John chose to compensate this one at the nut and it holds tune nicely all up and down the fingerboard. Whether you’re looking to have a guitar that holds well in Standard or an altered tuning king, you’ve certainly found it here.

John Soderlund is a luthier from South Africa, hailing from diverse background of arts and sciences. He builds custom electric and acoustic guitars to make, in his own words, “… a desperate attempt to deny my own mortality or, at the very least, to leave behind some beautiful and creative products that will compost at a slower rate than my bodily remains.” We dare say, he seems to be succeeding. One look at this instrument and the Africaster shows it’s originality. From the Red Bushwillow top to the Maple neck, not to mention the tiered headplate, this is a telecaster with a style all it’s own. The custom porter pickups offer an array of voices from clean middle positions to the round, bottom positions. An artfully crafted instrument from the other side of the world. For the player looking for adventure.

Here we have a gorgeous 2012 Bourgeois DBJC Custom in Cocobolo Rosewood and European Spruce. This Bourgeois is exquisite in every way–the tonewoods, the build quality, and fit-n-finish are all perfect. This guitar has the power and headroom to really dig in, but it also has a sweeter more delicate side, thanks in part to the large soundboard area. It’s worth stressing the wow factor of the Cocobolo. Rich brick-red hues with sapwood in the center! It’s some of the finest-quartered and best-looking we’ve encountered in some time. That fact, combined with tasteful Flamed Koa bindings, a cutaway for enhanced access to the upper register, and a K&K Pure Mini installed by yours truly make this one a winning pick every day of the year. Fossilized Mastadon Ivory bridge pins, bone nut and saddle, hide glue construction, and a varnish finish don’t hurt either!

Here we have a Rivero classical in Cedar and Brazilian Rosewood. This Rivero is a delight to hear, it has a wonderful breathiness of tone that makes this guitar seem almost alive when played. Traditional Spanish pieces really shine when played on this guitar. It has a lovely balance from bass to treble that keeps complex notation clear and precise. This is serious professional tone at a great price. Grab this one while you can!

James Goodall builds one of the most elegant guitars that we have come across. They are always tastefully appointed and built to perfection. Then there is the tone, which is complex and even up and down the fingerboard. This ECJC in European Spruce and Macassar Ebony has a mature voice that will please even the most staunch of finerstylist. We threw everything we could think of at this guitar and it handled it all with ease, this is an incredible guitar.

Here we have a Beardsell Style 2 in Cherry and Spruce. This Style 2 has a big, raucous voice that is unique and fully engrossing, reminiscent of a great Selmer guitar. This one excels at jazz and single line soloing in a larger setting, but has the versatility to emote even intricate fingerstyle in more intimate surroundings. The soundport design puts you right inside the voice of this guitar, enabling you to hear every nuance of the sound before it ever makes its way to the crowd. And though this one might have a 12 fret neck joint, the heel transition and cutaway ensure that you can solo up as high as you like with ease. If you love a good Jazz box but want more substance to your sound, look no farther.

Here we have a Michael Collins CL-4 Classical in Honduran Rosewood and Cedar. This is without question a concert level classical guitar with a powerful and articulate voice – and at an incredible price point. The trebles on this Collins are strong and ring like bells on a cold foggy morning, while the basses are dark and mysterious. It is hard to think of a more evenly voiced classical, which is great praise for Michael’s voicing ability, it is no easy task. Playability is also perfect and is well suited to complex classical fingerings.

Here we have a Masaru Kohno classical in Spruce and East Indian Rosewood. This is all Spanish tone territory here with a nice airiness to the bass and an expressiveness about the trebles. This classic pairing of tone woods in Kohno’s hands makes for a quality of sound that will have you wanting to play more and more. This guitar is incredibly well maintained, especially for its age, and has a comfortable, played in feel. It’s hard to find a better feeling and playing classical than this!

There are very few guitars in the world that are as easy and fun to play as the Taylor T5. This T5 in Flamed Maple and Sapele is such a blast to play that everyone in the Dream Guitars shop wants to take it home for themselves, and that may yet happen so grab it while you can! The tone of this guitar is the definition of versatility thanks to the two humbuckers and the body sensor. The T5 can have a sweet acoustic sound or that full on electric vibe, and it does all of them well. Combine the great tone with that classic Taylor playability and you have one wicked guitar that you won’t want to put down!

David Flammang is building some of the nicest vintage style guitars around. Everything we have played from David has been expertly crafted and has a voice that is rich and warm. This RS35 in Red Spruce and Mahogany Harkins back to Gibsons gone by, with that throaty growl of Mahogany and the power of Red Spruce. David finished the top on this one with a fun sparkle lacquer, it is the first time we have seen this done here at the shop and it is a nice touch. Flammang guitars are among the classiest guitars on the market, if you are looking for a beautiful, vintage style guitar, look no further.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you a powerhouse of Grand Concert from David Flammang! This new GC50-L has got Flammang’s characteristic brightness and attack in spades here, thanks in part to the classic pairing of East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce, and in part by Flammang’s Lowden-inspired top bracing. With a shockingly clear upper register (like jumping in an alpine lake) and a warm low-end (like a roaring fire in winter), this guitar is one that folks won’t want to put down. Flammang’s skills are top-notch, and his understated appointments, from the elegantly carved Ebony bridge to the oval soundhole and Abalone rosette, are deceptively subtle camouflage for this livewire of a Grand Concert. Complete with a Guardian hardshell case, this GC50-L will be making beautiful music for the rest of its long life.

This little Rugiere is just a fun guitar to play. It was owned by professional player Rodrigo Rodriguez. It is rare that we see a Baroque styled guitar, and it is a treat every time we do. Tonally this Rugiere has a voice for playing fast notes with clarity. The notes fly from the carved soundhole as soon as your fingers touch the strings. It is hard not to have fun while playing this guitar – it has so much character and is effortless under hand.

Jesus Marzal was a long time builder for Ramirez guitars, so we know right off the bat that Jesus has the building chops. This Concierto model has all the Spanish tone we could hope for. The trebles are crisp and the basses are full and present without being in the least overpowering or muddy. Built from East Indian Rosewood and Cedar this Concierto has warmth and clarity to spare, without question this is a concert level guitar, at a price that can not be beat.

John Slobod, the luthier behind Circa Guitars is one of the top builders in pre war style instruments. Great players from all over the world choose Circa and it isn’t hard to tell why. We recently had a house concert with Steve Baughman where he played his own Circa guitar and it sounded gorgeous. This D-28 in Red Spruce and Madagascar Rosewood is a great representation of the incredibly high bar that John sets in his building, being flawless in tone and build quality. The basses roar and are tempered expertly by the fat singing trebles. This is an exceptional pre war style dread from a builder at the very top of the game!

Here we go with a big bodied Rainsong! This guitar has a HUGE voice, close your eyes and we bet you won’t even be able to tell that this isn’t a wood built guitar. As usual the tone for Rainsong is even across the board, there are few guitars made from any material that pull off the evenness of tone that Rainsong does. Playability on a Rainsong is always spot on, any time you want it, any place you need it.

We are constantly impressed by the quality of builders that are out on the scene right now, even the builders we are just finding out about. That is the case with Ben Wilborn, this is the first instrument we have had from Ben and it is thoroughly amazing. The build quality on this Orchestra model is outstanding, hold this guitar for only a minute and you can tell it was built by a professional who is passionate about his work. What’s more amazing is the quality of voice Ben achieved on this guitar, it is so full and mature you would think this was a decades old guitar, it truly is astounding!

This is a Hickler Old Time Banjo with a multiple piece tone ring crafted from Walnut & Maple. It features a Flamed Maple neck and Ebony fingerboard adorned with vintage style fret markers. There is a sliding capo installed, a well intonated bridge and the fretboard is scalloped for clawhammer. It’s a great custom made Banjo for any player in the old time tradition.

Here we have a Jake Robinson SJ in Brazilian Rosewood and Bearclaw Sitka Spruce. One of the first things we inspect on a new guitar is build quality and this SJ Jake sent keeps up with the best in that regard. This guitar is flawlessly fitted, and has unique appointments like the staggered rosette design and the rectangular heel shape. The next area of inspection for us is tone and playabilty. This is a sophisticated, modern sounding guitar with a controlled bass presence and a truly inspiring treble response that will have you wanting to fingerpick all day long. This one is made to be played all day long, as it is set up perfectly and is comfortable in every position up and down the fretboard.

Bill Tippin is one of the heavyweights in the hand built guitar world, he consistently builds some of the most jaw dropping guitars that we have come through the shop. This DST model in Alpine Spruce and Madagascar Rosewood is no different – it is brilliant. Tone is the name of the game with this guitar and it is a monster! The bass is huge and gut rumbling with very beautiful, clean trebles. Flatpickers are sure to love the power of this guitar, but that isn’t all it can do, it is also incredibly responsive and adept to fingerpicking.

There are few guitars suited to the workhorse life like a Martin HD-28. This thing has the tone and the toughness to handle what the road may throw at it. Built from East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce, this guitar has the loud and driving tone to lead a roaring bluegrass band. If you need more volume than this guitar can provide acoustically, then just plug in through the Fishman Matrix pickup and get all the volume you need. This is a great guitar that has had some good years spent on it with many more years left to go.

The Martin OM-42 is a guitar that normally would need no introduction, but this one has a crisp sweetness about it that demands special attention right from the get go. The classic, time tested combination of Sitka Spruce and East Indian Rosewood yields driving, yet glassy bass and trebles that were just born to carry a melody. And while the 42-style adornments may give it an incredible look, the real value in this one is the voice. It seems to melt into your hands and go exactly where you’re thinking with the least possible effort. Call us soon before it’s gone forever! This is the one you’ll regret not asking about…

Here we have a Schoenberg ES-14C built by Bruce Sexauer. Bruce has been a long standing favorite here at the Dream Guitars shop, he builds some of the most “Alive” guitars we have come across. Legendary fingerpicker Eric Schoenberg has a handfull of the top luthiers build guitars under the Schoenberg name. This Schoenberg is one of the best sounding guitars in this size body that we have played in quite some time. You almost have to tie this down to keep it from vibrating off of your lap – it is that powerful and responsive. Every string has so much complexity and character of tone it is staggering. This is a world class guitar built by one of the great masters of our time.
