At first touch, the Petros sings. We instantly fell in love when this 2014 Celt Fingerstyle came through the door. Macassar Ebony back and sides with strong inking similar to Ziricote, creamy Italian Spruce on top, and everywhere you look Bruce and Matt’s Celtic knot motif ties it all together. A natural choice for DADGAD, we also found this Petros Celt to hold its own back up in Standard tuning, and on down to C# too. The voice has a smooth, glassy top end that goes down easy, and we love how consistently this Petros responds across the fretboard. The overtones are clear and present, haunting.
This Petros Celt Fingerstyle is, frankly, a dream come true.

Manuel Velazquez is one of the great masters of Classical guitar building, his guitars have reached great levels of respect of players and builders alike. We have here a classical from 1968 built in German Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood that was restored by Manuel himself in 2010. The famous Velazquez tone is fully present here, it rings like a bell from trebles to the bass. The bass strings are truly amazing on this guitar, pluck the low E and it will fill a room with warm rumbling tones. This guitar is in incredible shape for its age, it plays like brand new. Don’t miss out on the chance to own a guitar from one of the masters of our time.

There are very few guitars in the world that are as easy and fun to play as the Taylor T5. This T5 in Sitka Spruce and Sapele is such a blast to play that everyone in the Dream Guitars shop wants to take it home for themselves, and that may yet happen so grab it while you can! The tone of this guitar is the definition of versatility thanks to the two humbuckers and the body sensor. The T5 can have a sweet acoustic sound or that full on electric vibe, and it does all of them well. Combine the great tone with that classic Taylor playability and you have one wicked guitar that you won’t want to put down!

Here we have a Tom Ellis F style Mandolin in Highly Figure Maple and Sitka Spruce. Tom is widely regarded as one of the best Mandolin Luthiers in the world, If you are a bluegrass mandolin player you know Toms name and his instruments. This F style is easily one of the nicest sounding and playing mandolins we have had, it has plenty of tone and chop to cut through a heavy bluegrass mix, but it is also sweet and excels at solo work. There is little doubt after playing this mandolin that Tom Ellis is a master Luthier, this instrument is flawless in every aspect from construction to finish, a true masterpiece.

We happened to get two at the same time from a gent who collects Collings guitars. This is another mint condition Collings Dreadnought powerhouse. Crafted from Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce, the D2H takes it’s character from the classic Martin D-28 design but is built with the Collings perfection. Every line is clean and it plays with ease. It’s no wonder so many of today’s players choose Collings guitars over any other!

We’re always happy to get our hands on a guitar from Tom Doerr’s shop, so when this Legacy Select from 2010 came up we made sure it found its way onto our wall. This is an excellent example of Doerr’s Legacy model–his most popular design–with a gorgeous chocolate set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, and a Swiss Spruce top which exudes clarity and powerful projection. One crack of the low E string, however, and you’ll find the bass is thunderous, with a well-defined edge that works well for fingerstyle arrangements. For that matter, all the registers are well-defined and present, making this one of the most well-balanced instruments we have in the shop right now!
If the devil’s in the details, then this is one devilishly beautiful guitar: micro-beveled bindings for player comfort, Florentine Cutaway, L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup, subtle routed channel on the back of the headstock which matches the seams of the neck laminations. We’re grateful to Tom for maintaining a perfectionist’s attention to detail across every aspect of this guitar’s construction, from the finish to the tone.

Here we have a Collings UT2 Ukulele in Mahogany top and back and sides. Collings is a powerhouse instrument maker, they build incredibly consistent instrument that play, look, and sound great. The story is no different with this Ukulele, it is superbly built, with great tonewoods, and has a full and loud tone that really is refreshing in the Ukulele world.

Here we have a 2013 Collings 02-G 12 string in German Spruce and East Indian Rosewood that will absolutely steal your heart away. We have rarely had this much fun playing a guitar here in the shop, the combination of the small body and the shorter scale make this one of the easiest twelve strings we have ever played. The smaller body works surprisingly well for a twelve strings, the octave strings shine through the way they should giving this guitar a perfect shimmering chorus effect. With the excellent quality and tone that comes from Collings, you can’t help but fall in love with this little gem.

Here we have a Martin 000-42M Eric Clapton in Carpathian Spruce and Madagascar Rosewood. If you know anything about Eric Clapton, you know he is an incredible guitarist with a discerning ear. He won’t let just anyone make a guitar model with his name on it, it has to be a great company and the good folks at Martin are just the people for the job. This 000-42M was modeled after Eric’s personal 1939 000-42, which in its own right is an incredibly famous guitar, big shoes to fill to be sure. We think they hit the ball out of the park with this one, it has the look and feel of that great pre-war 000 that Eric loves so much. Tonally this 000 is perfect for fingerpicking and performs brilliantly even under a flatpick. It has an ideal blend and balance from bass to mids to trebles, with a sublime voice and style.

This is why we are called Dream Guitars, because of instruments like this. Here we have a Henderson D-45 in Premium quality Adirondack (Red) Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood, that has been revoiced by the godfather of modern fingerstyle guitar himself Ervin Somogyi. This is an ultimate example of two worlds meeting in the realm of lutherie. This dreadnought maintains its flatpicking, and robust quality all the while preserving that power in the hands of a fingerstyle player. This instrument is truly one of a kind, and an absolute masterpiece at that, for the player and collector alike.

Joe Veillette’s guitars combine modern tonality with a streamlined aesthetic geared toward ultimate efficiency for the professional musician–and this 2011 Parlor fits the bill magnificently. With a lightly sunburst finished Sitka Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides, this little creature can belt it out with an impressive projection and sustain of the well-balanced voice. The asymmetrical body allows for a comfortable playing experience, despite its small size, and the included arm rest bevel provides further luxury. Capable of handling tunings from DADGAD to Standard with no trouble at all, this Veillette Parlor has trebles with clarity and presence, and great string-to-string separation for all of your fingerstyle arrangements, from Celtic to Ragtime. With the addition of a D-Tar pickup, this Parlor will quickly become both your favorite around-the-house and gigging guitar, and its fast and low action will become your favorite setup.

There is something about this Blanchard Bristlecone that just calls out to you when you walk into the room. It resonates as soon as there is the slightest movement near it, just begging to be played. This 2000 Bristlecone in Indian Rosewood and European Spruce is simply appointed, shifting all of the player’s focus to the incredible tone and playability. If you are looking for a perfectly balanced voice, look no further: this beauty sings bold and true from the low E string to the high. Fingerpickers will fall head over heels for this beauty.

Here we have what may be the most balanced dread we have come across in recent memory, a Huss & Dalton TD-R Custom in Adirondack (Red) Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood. The first thing we think we should mention about this guitar is the breathtaking Brazilian Rosewood used on this guitar, it is truly of a rare quality, the figuring is beautifull and is on not only the back but the sides as well, this is easily one of the prettiest sets of Brazilian we have seen, ever. In keeping with the quality of wood, the quality of tone this guitar has is show stopping. It is balanced expertly from bass to trebles, every string is full and lush, each as beautiful as the next.

The D-45 has long been C.F. Martins flagship model guitar, it represents the best of what Martin can do and harkens back to the golden era of the 30’s and 40’s. This 1991 D-45 in East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce is a great show of force, it has power by the truck loads and tone to spare. This will make someone a perfect flatpicking guitar, it will cut through a heavy mix of instruments with ease and shine in the spotlight. Playing this guitar, it is easy to see just why the Martin guitar is so well respected in the industry.

Here we have a Leo Posch GA-RW in East Indian Rosewood and Adirondack (Red) Spruce. This is a guitar well suited to fingerstyle playing and recording, it has glassy trebles with punchy mids and smooth and even basses. Playability is fast and easy with a nice round neck profile. This will be certain to make someone a perfect “go to” guitar, whether for recording, performing live or playing for the enjoyment of playing, this Posch can do it wonderfully.

Here we have a fantastic Bogdanovich Classical in Red Cedar and East Indian Rosewood. John builds what we think to be some of the best classical guitars out there old or new. His guitars have a quality of tone and voice that really sound full and robust, easily filling up a large room. Another thing that sets a Bogdanovich guitar apart from the rest is the perfection of build quality, they are gorgeous with nary a flawed motif. This particular Bogdanovich has been loved and has a few marks to show for it, but that just means that this thing has been played in well and has a full sonorous voice.

The folks who run the Custom Shop at Martin Guitars know what they’re doing: one look at the Custom 0-42, and you’ll see what we mean. In pairing Madagascar Rosewood back and sides with a European Spruce top, they gave this guitar a sumptuously rich voice with sparkling trebles and a room-filling bottom end. Not satisfied with an instrument which simply sounded great, the Martin Custom Shop then adorned this guitar with their 42-style Abalone appointments, from the torch headstock and snowflake fretboard inlay to the body bindings and rosette, making this guitar a stunning gem you won’t want to shut up in its case for long. Laid into with a thumbpick for Ragtime or Blues and this guitar barks with the best of them; strummed gently for Early American ballads, you’ve a sirensong on your hands. Regardless of your style, the notes which escape the Abalone-bound soundhole will hang in the air for what feels like a lifetime (which is about how long you’ll want to keep playing this 0-42 as well).

When we tell you an instrument is just about perfect, you know we’re not kidding. This 2005 Bown OM? In order to be more dynamic, it’d have to two guitars. For the singer-songwriter looking for an OM-size guitar that accompanies their voice with a strong, vigorous tone that doesn’t upstage their own pyrotechnics, this Bown fits the bill. For the accomplished fingerstylist who needs pianistic articulation and crisp resonsiveness, look no further. For the session player at the local Jazz or Blues jam, this Bown’s got room for smoking solos on the trebles, and a meaty low-end for vamping and steady basslines.

One of England’s finest luthiers, Ralph Bown’s work is always welcome here–but the problem is they keep running back out the door! If you’re even remotely interested in this Cuban Mahogany-and-Spruce OM, strike while the iron’s hot (if you’re thinking about taking it home, chances are someone else is, too).

In our quest for great sounding instruments that can handle any environment, we have tried the full gamut of makers available on the market. Of the makers that we tested, we have only found a few that meet the needs of our discerning players. Emerald Guitars based out of the UK continually impresses us with not only the quality of construction of their incredible Carbon Fiber instruments, but also with their responsive voice and ideal price point.

The X7 is one of their small body Travel guitars with a Venetian cutaway and an offset soundhole. Lightweight in build, but a heavyweight in durability and tone, this guitar comes standard with B-Band electronics and a great, heavy duty gig bag. These guitars have a full 24″ scale length so it feels very normal to go between this guitar and your “regular” 25″-25.5″ scale length instruments. Comprised entirely of space age Carbon Fiber, this piece is ready for anything you throw its way. Great for the stage and the outdoors alike!

Here we have a Sunburst Collings 01SB in Sitka Spruce and Mahogany. Collings and Co. certainly know how to build a great guitar, the tone is incredible and the bang for the buck is phenomenal. Tonally this little guitar is all sweet tones and woody growl. Play it softly and it will sing sweetly, dig in for some blues and you will have a bull dog on your hands! If you are looking for a serious instrument for playing out or just for the sheer enjoyment of playing, this one will not let you down.

Here we have a Froggy Bottom M model in Adirondack (Red) Spruce and highly figured Cocobolo Rosewood. There is something incredibly special about this froggy, and that is saying a lot about a company who in our opinion produce exclusively special instruments. This is a smaller bodied guitar, but strike the first note and you would never think it was anything less than a large bodied behemoth. Everything we threw at this guitar sounded lush, like velvet or butter, like a dream or a summer breeze. However you choose to describe the tone of this guitar, it isn’t going to be adequate. Do yourself a great favor and come in and play this thing.

Here we have a stunning OM in Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack (Red) Spruce from Fujii Guitars. This is our idea of a well thought out guitar, the lines are clean and elegant, every motif executed to perfection. The rosette on this guitar is breathtaking, it is rare to see so delicate of a design on a steel string guitar, we would usually equate such a thing to a classical, it works wonderfully here. Apart from being thoroughly enjoyable eye candy, this OM keeps pace in the tone department. This is a modern fingerstyle guitar through and through, the bass is round and full while the trebles are fat and melodic, accompanied by a wonderful punch in the mids. We have enjoyed this guitar to the extreme, every one here at DG has oohed and ahhed over this one, it is Incredible.

The father and son team of Orville and Robert Milburn have built here what we consider to be an exceptional Hauser style Concert Classical. Built from beautiful African Blackwood and European Spruce with Snakewood appointments, this guitar is stunning to behold. A classic look and feel permeate the construction of this guitar. Tonally, this Concert has all you could ask for, Sharp cutting trebles, warm mids and powerful, gut rumbling bass. This one checks all the boxes on our list and we bet it does on yours, too.

Greg Smallman has been one of the top innovators in the Classical guitar building world for many years. Although his instruments may not seem all that different from the norm on the outside, strike one note and you will know straight away that something very different is happening beneath your fingertips. This 1995 Smallman Concert model in Brazilian Rosewood and Cedar is unlike any classical guitar we have ever played. It is exceptionally loud–even without having to drive it hard, this guitar will genuinely fill up a room with profound and complex tones. It maintains a beautiful and lush voice at full volume with no distortion or tubbiness to be found anywhere. Greg has achieved this sound by making radical changes to the inner structure of the guitar, utilizing lattice bracing and carbon fiber combined with an incredibly thin top plate. The Smallman guitar is so special in fact that Legendary concert performer John Williams has used a Smallman guitar for a large part of his performing career. This is a life-changing guitar that will make a perfect instrument for the concert perfomer.
