Jim Redgate’s collaboration with Ana Vidovic has led to one of our favorite classicals to pass through the shop in a long, long time. This is an example of when power plays perfectly alongside poise and elegance. We love the smooth, rich quality that the bass register lends to the voice, and the fact that it blends so easily with the mids and top end. Projection is flawless and crystal; a true concert hall instrument. But this Redgate doesn’t suffer a brittle or harsh tone in order to achieve that volume. Jim manages to coax out balance and power in equal measure.
The back and sides are dramatically figured Ziricote (also at the headplate), and this Ana Vidovic Model features a Spruce double top with lattice bracing and a satin finish for maximum resonance. Elsewhere the guitar is finished to a glossy sheen. An armrest protects the top from the player’s arm, and a slightly elevated fingerboard allows easier access to the topmost frets. This entire operation weighs under four pounds. It’s a lifetime guitar from one of our modern masters.

This is our first Kris Barnett, here from 2019, and we hope it won’t be our last. Such a beauty. Gabon Ebony body with Cedar on top (itself partially ‘bent’ and paired with an elevated fingerboard for easy playability); Spanish Cedar neck; resonant French Polishing throughout; and modern features like a two-way adjustable truss rod and bolt on neck! It’s refreshing to see contemporary designs like these cropping up in the nylon string world, offering new ways to contribute to, and elevate, the Classical repertoire.

The Concert Series is all about Warm Tone.  These are the lightest soundboards built by RainSong using unidirectional carbon.  Unidirectional carbon mimics the tight grain of a fine spruce soundboard.  Thus, it is not surprising that this line produces a warmer tone.

The RainSong CO-WS3000 12-String Acoustic-Electric Guitar combines the large-sized sound chamber with lightweight carbon-fiber/spruce construction to deliver extra-loud and deep tone that superbly counterbalances the extra treble strings. This is a 12-string guitar that is great for strumming and finger style, full of power and delicacy, and ready to hit the road. The RainSong CO-WS3000 12-string acoustic-electric guitar is able to stay in tune at concert pitch and to withstand temperature and humidity variations; qualities that every seasoned 12-string player has long pined for.

We’re big fans of Kevin Caton. He’s pushing the envelope with creature comforts, an expressive voice, and an eye for new and exciting aesthetics. This brand new Sullivan model is outfitted with lovely b back and sides with Italian Spruce on top, plus Kevin’s Bevel Port (combination soundport and rib bevel). A geometric motif is rendered at the headstock, rosette, end graft, and back in blue purfles, and a seven-lamination neck makes for absolute stability.

This one practically moves on its own. So much energy under the hood! We simply love how alive and vibrant Marc Maingard’s 000s are, and this one’s one of the most electric we’ve seen. Opening up since 2007, it’s fantastically awake and raring to go. Dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides match up with a lovely, creamy European Spruce top, 12 fret neck join, and arm & rib bevels for creature comfort. Aesthetically, Marc’s distinctive headplate design is set off with custom tuners and the rosette pops in turquoise (echoed with similar purflings along the top, back, and heelcap).
The voice is quick, immediate, vigorous. The registers mix up nicely, with a crisp bottom end that feels like it’s leaping out of the soundhole. Playability is gossamer to boot, and the 12-fret neck makes the 25.4” scale feel extra easy in hand.
This Maingard is a powerhouse’s powerhouse, the guitar that a guitar would play if a guitar could play.

And then there was a 45 from ’38. Just handling this piece of prewar history is an honor, let alone to play it—and we’re honored to offer it to you. Before discontinuing the series in 1942, Martin only built 265 45-series flattops, making only 19 000s in 1938. The venerable T.J. Thompson has handled this beauty before and vouches for its originality, as do we and our repair staff after having gone over it tuner to tail. Inside, this one has some interesting features that further set it apart. 1938 was the transition year from forward X-braced tops to rear X; look inside and you’ll see notches in the kerf lining for a forward X (with serial 69896 putting it early in ’38), but the X is actually rear shifted. Thompson confirms that it is an original Martin top with period correct pearl, and offers that the build could have started early in the year and was shelved for some reason until after the factory transitioned to rear X tops. Alternatively, the original top could have failed within the year and was replaced in 1938 or 1939 with a rear X. Regardless, this 000-45 plays like a sweet dream, and rings, rings, rings. It’s in a category of its own, and has been played in just enough for that wide awake sound, without a lot of wear and tear. Holy grail, indeed.

Here. we. go! A livewire 000-42 Custom Shop Martin in Indian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce that’s easy on the eyes and ears (and hands). Built in 2018, in great shape and raring to go. The Engelmann is an upgraded, premium grade eight set, and is finished out with a gorgeous vintage-styled brown shade top and Koa bindings. The soundhole is bound with a sweet custom rosette of diamonds, and the top border is dark Abalone to boot. The tone is lively and energetic, with a quick response and clean projection that really soaks up fingerstyle tunes. 24.9” scale in a 14-fret 000 arrangement adds warmth to the trebles that pairs up so sweetly with the mids and bass registers, and the easy setup makes it so hard to put this beauty down for any length of time. Comes wrapped up in a molded Martin case.

Versatility is the name of the game with this 2015 M.G.-4.0 XP in your hands. Dramatically figured Beeswing Mahogany pairs here with Adirondack Spruce for a detailed, even voice that’s the right mix of energy and balance. It’s fabulous for fingerstyle with such even clarity between the notes, and it’s got gears under the hood to open up when leaned into with a flatpick. An L.R. Baggs pickup system brings all these dynamics faithfully onto the stage, and moreover this McPherson comes with an upgraded Hoffee case for maximum protection. A lot of folks want a guitar that can handle a wide range of settings, and we honestly just don’t often find ones that can hold up—but this McPherson is one of those rare birds.

Further, indeed. The team at Alembic has been pushing the envelope for years, and that sterling reputation for innovation has led to a community of ardent fans of both basses and electrics. We recently landed one of their Further models from 2015, and we get what all the fuss is about: this is a well-oiled machine capable of handling, well, anything. Purpleheart body with Buckeye top and back laminates; through neck; chrome hardware; and heaps of electronics. The team outfitted this one with volume, three pickup selectors, three filters, effects loop, effects loop bypass, LED position markers—the works. Whew! The through neck is a laminate of Flame Maple, Purpleheart, and Cherry, and is such a strikingly gorgeous number with silky play feel to boot. The fit and finish is flawless from tuners to tail, and we find ourselves struggling to put it down for any real length of time. Weighs in at eight pounds for a solid heft that won’t bow your shoulders: the Alembic Further is the complete package.

The Nashville is a bold stage guitar. The unidirectional carbon/spruce SFT soundboard is finished in an attractive 3-tone tobacco sunburst and supplemented with eye-catching appointments.

How do you describe RainSong’s JM? Three words: loud, loud, and loud. And if that’s not enough, it’s also loud. This is the largest body RainSong builds. The sheer size, combined with the attributes of Projection Tuned Layering™ and Soundboard Fusion Technology™ make the JM one of the loudest acoustic guitars on the planet. This guitar is loud. We had to say it again. But the JM is not just about power. The narrow waist and some layering refinements specific to the Jumbo soundboard give the JM some real fingerstyle grace. The guitar is strong, but impeccably balanced, with bass, mids and trebles distinct, clear and, dare we say it again, loud.

Kevin Caton fits a whole case of tone in a six-pack body—the petite HJ is a lively number with 14” lower bout, Honduran Rosewood body, and Torrefied Adirondack Spruce on top. The pre-aged Adi adds power and crunch to the voice, giving the bass response more kick than you’d expect. The build quality is top notch, and featherweight (under three pounds) with great neck-to-body balance for playing on either leg. This beauty comes to us from brand new from 2019, so it’s had a little extra time to open up on top of the Torrefied Adirondack.

With a guitar from Jason Kostal, we know we’ve got a special treat in store. After apprenticing under the godfather of modern guitarbuilding, Ervin Somogyi, Kostal struck out on his own several years back, and he’s been hard at work honing his own style and voice. The result? This work of elegance from 2020. Here Jason lets the tonewoods speak for themselves—dark Indian Rosewood, pale German Spruce, Rosewood bridge and two-tone headstock veneers. At the soundhole he used his trademark Stained Glass rosette to add a splash of color (here a mix of purples, lilacs, and earthy pinks); otherwise, it’s the quality of the craftpersonship and the materials that dictate the aesthetic.
That understated quality is echoed in the voice to a degree as well. Note definition is smooth and balanced across the registers, and we love that the response is even and consistent along the fretboard. There are also some haunting treble overtones that come out under a delicate and spacious touch which we loved. The setup is silk smooth to the touch, just like every other aspect of this Kostal OM.

This guitar is an instant classic. The 1967 Guild F-312 was built towards the end of their production run with Brazilian Rosewood, but nonetheless has a fantastically straight-grained set here that’d put Martin’s Brazilian of the time to shame. Spruce on top, plus a slick, smooth setup, makes for the perfect 12 string machine! Our repair staff has gone over this one tuner to tail and has buttoned it up with a freshly clean bill of health.

A gorgeous, mostly original Gibson F4 from 1920. Figured Maple body with Spruce on top and a Varnish finish throughout, Ivoroid bindings and half rope rosette trim, original inlaid tuners and pickguard—it’s a sweetheart. Gibson wasn’t using adjustable bridges until the 1920s, so we believe this bridge was added afterwards, although the footprint of the bridge matches the impressions in the top finish. If it is replaced, it appears to have been done very early in its life. Our repair staff recently went over it from tuner to tail and have given it a clean bill of health (and refretting it for a killer setup).

Powerful and balanced in equal measure, lightweight and effortless in hand. We’ve landed a dynamite 2015 Lowden S-35J in Brazilian Rosewood and Alpine Spruce that’s ready to be yours! Fantastic condition, with Lowden’s classic satin finish everywhere for maximum resonance and a velvet play feel, plus these nylon crossovers are bolstered by the creature comforts of a 14-fret neck, cutaway, radiused fretboard, and slimmer nut (1 7/8”). Moreover, this beauty has a K&K Classic Mini pickup installed which sounds fantabulous, even just straight into our Genzler Acoustic Array.
You simply can’t go wrong with this Lowden: it’s an exercise in effortlessness to play, and rings out with sweet riches and precision.

A powerful piece that’s been steadily opening up since 1987, this Classical from Hawaiian luthier Douglas Ching reminds us all about the beauty that comes with age. The voice is rich, precise, and engrossing. Gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair with Spruce on top, and the featherweight build (right at 3 1/2 pounds) is a testament to the opened up nature of the voice. This Douglas Ching has some play marks appropriate for its 30+ years, and is in fine functional shape to keep making music. 651mm scale with a 52mm nut on a medium-thickness Spanish Cedar neck with Ching’s “two doves” headstock; French Polished throughout; comes wrapped up in the original case.

This guitar feels like royalty, the perfect blend of power and elegance. Michael Thames is one of our favorite nylon string builders, and we especially love his Double Top models like #979 from 2019. Indian Rosewood body with a Cedar/Balsa double top makes for a voice that pairs a smooth, enveloping bass register with cool and precise trebles. We love the note definition, and separation between the registers. This Thames DT has a very vocal quality that imparts a lot of body and color, which we continually found ourselves losing track of time with. Thames’ fit and finish is flawless here, especially with a translucent French Polish finish that lets the Rosewood and Cedar shine. The headstock is carved with an Ebony veneer and Rosewood underneath which sets off the Gotoh tuners handsomely. The build weight comes in at an incredibly light 3lbs 7oz; this Thames DT is a featherweight in hand, but with a vigorous and expressive voice under the strings.

Power and poise, in a petite package! This 2016 Greven is the real deal, folks, a powerhouse that loves an aggressive attack but has the responsiveness and dynamic range to bloom under a light touch too. Fingers and picks both welcome! We don’t often find guitars that really manage to work well for both, but this 000-12 Custom is one of those rare pieces. Moreover this beauty is outfitted with gorgeous, straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood and high-altitude harvested Engelmann Spruce, has a chunky and wide neck that’s oh. so. comfortable with its 1 25/32” nut, and subtle Abalone top trim to tie it all together. The voice pairs up a lively and warm bass response with a rich midrange and smooth, glassy top end. It’s a great choice for Standard as well as DADGAD and even C tunings. The Engelmann Spruce John used here came from a tree cut from the top of a range in the Rockies, and features incredibly tight grain. John typically preferred not using Engelmann, but these few sets had the qualities we associate with Adirondack—headroom, clarity, power—and John put them to proper use. The Brazilian is even more unique: this prewar straight-grain stock came from a 1937 log that yielded only a handful of sets. This lines up with Martin stock of the time as well, and as John believes, could have come from near where Martin sourced their coastal Brazilian Rosewood with its characteristic reds and dark winter growth lines.

Julius Borges knows how to utilize every square inch. This 000 form 2011 has an expansive voice that belies its petite proportions, with the perfect amount of balance and definition between the registers to make fingerstyle work absolutely sing. This gorgeous Borges is upgraded with arrow-striaght Madagascar Rosewood back and sides (looks strikingly like the best prewar BRW Martin stock) and Adirondack Spruce on top, fine herringbone trim, plus pyramid bridge for the classic flattop aesthetic. The setup is silky smooth and easy on the hands, with a 12-fret body join for extra warmth and a medium thick neck carve.

We’re fortunate indeed to have an OM-42 from Blazer & Henkes in the shop. These two really know how to pull off the classic prewar sound and aesthetic; this example from 2011 is the proof in the pudding. A light-brown set of Brazilian Rosewood makes up the back and sides with a touch of flatsawn drama, paired with a colorful European Spruce top and light green Abalone trim with 42-style appointments. Ivoroid bindings and Waverly tuners round out the classic look. This OM-42 weighs under four pounds and has a lovely setup for fingerstyle play in Standard and lowered tunings as well; we also really enjoyed getting into some flatpicking with this one. The voice has enough power and presence to hold up well under a stronger attack, and still offer sweetness and rich overtones when plucked softly as well. The soft V neck has a wide, full in-hand feel that’s just lovely.

Nigel Forster packs more into his instruments than you can shake a pick at. Here we’ve landed a brand new Guitar Bouzouki from him that is set up for extended range, playability, and power. Sweetly figured Bubinga back and sides pair with a European Spruce top that’s been engineered in the Howe Orme cylinder style–meaning the center section of top is cylindrically arched. The result is a very stiff top at about 40% the usual mass, and lighter makes louder in this case. Add to that the extended range afforded to a course of low C on the bottom of the 10 string setup, and you have an instrument for just about every application. Nigel further enhanced playability with a cutaway, subtle arm bevel, EVO frets, and a zero fret nut.

Real strength. That’s what The Everbloom SJ Charis from 2014 exudes. The voice is strong, vigorous, quick and rich at the same time. We love the power of individual notes flatpicked, and how at the same time big chords mix up and blend smoothly. It holds up handsomely for fingerstyle work, and in defiance of popular opinion about Redwood tops this Charis is a great strummer under a flatpick as well. Part of Bill Wise’s success here comes from his eye for tonewood. The fabled “The Tree” Quilted Mahogany, pairing up with Sinker Redwood, makes for that balance between warmth and crisp note decay, as well as overall power. A soundport in the upper bout adds a little more “me in the monitor” to the player’s ear, and sprawling across the fretboard, headstock, and rosette we find a series of delicate vine and flower inlays. Hence, The Everbloom. This Charis is a tonal work of art, with a visual aesthetic to match.

We’ve played a number of Greenfields over the years, and have always been impressed by the power, dynamic range, and beauty of his builds. And here we’ve got just such a build from 2016 with some incredible tonewoods! “Fallen Giant” Guatemalan Mahogany back and sides adds clarity and liveliness to the bass, but with an Alpine Moonspruce top Michael pulls out sweet, sweet overtones in the treble register and some sumptuously colorful mids. Michael manages to thread the needle between dry and juicy, giving this G2 a wiiiide dynamic range for both fingers and picks. A 25.78” scale means you can tune down into D or C and still get good snap and string feel. A Laskin-style arm bevel and “heel swoosh” neck heel are the creature comforts of choice here, plus Michael’s silk-smooth setup for effortless playability.

Cream of the crop, and then some. And then some more. This is what happens when Sergei de Jonge shoots for the moon, and nails it. His Chelsea Presentation model from 2005 fires on all cylinders, from voice to visuals. Extremely rare Birdseye Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair up with Adirondack Spruce on top; Figured Snakewood appointments wrap the body and are used for both the bridge and the fingerboard; gold Rodgers tuners with Black Pearl buttons; Fossilized Ivory nut & saddle. After just one strum, we were struck by the immediacy and clarity of the voice. There’s crisp note definition from bass to treble, and a smoothness to the bottom end that really fills out the voice. It’s lovely in Standard, and also holds up handsomely tuned down—plus the silky smooth setup is an exercise in effortlessness. From tuner to tail, inside and out, this de Jonge Chelsea Presentation model is a work of art that stands in a category all its own.
