Stephen Marchione’s 16 Inch Archtop is a complete instrument. Silk smooth playability, gorgeous tonewoods, and an expressive and dynamic acoustic voice that translates faithfully into amplified tone thanks to a custom collaboration between Stephen and DiMarzio. Maple body with Spruce top and Ebony tailpiece, bridge, and pickguard. Locking Sperzel tuners in black match up perfectly with the Ebony headplate, rendered in Marchione’s trademark headstock shape. A slim 1 11/16″ nut allows for deft lefthand work, and the relatively light build weight under six pounds makes this 16″ archtop from 2003 exceedingly comfortable in hand.

Here’s an additional video with Tim Fischer playing this Marchione 16″ Archtop!: https://youtu.be/LEuoR6pwCio

Stephen Marchione manages to make a 17 inch archtop play as easy as a much smaller guitar–without losing the projection and power and resonance of the big box. The 3″ sides help with this, as well as the silky setup and neck carve. Back and sides are cello-grade Curly Maple, and on top Stephen opted for a set of European Spruce that matches perfectly. Ebony hardware throughout, and the pickup has been more recently upgraded with a custom Marchione-DiMarzio PAF collaboration–and this humbucker sings!

Mario Beauregard’s touch with chisel and plane, sandpaper and file, is unparalleled. This 2018 Facettes Archtop 16″ is an absolute feat of modern lutherie! Sumptuously figured Maple back and sides, Spruce top, gold Lollar pickup with volume and tone at the pickguard; upper bout soundport; effortless playability and response. This instrument is like inspiration in wood form. Mario engineers the top with these arcing facets that feature subtle soundholes integrated into their centers–we can’t imagine how he pulls this off so well–which you’ll also find across the carved Maple back for continuity. Note how the pickguard descends to a point above the bridge, its outside edge matching the curves of the facets. Setup is butter smooth and slinky, and this 2018 Beauregard comes wrapped up in a custom Hoffee case for maximum protection.

Tom Bills‘ status as a premier builder of archtop guitars is manifest in this gorgeous Cremona 16 inch from 2015. Not only is the fit and finish perfect, the setup glassy, and the neck-to-weight ratio dialed in–the voice, both acoustic and electric, is rich and warm and immediately envelops you. This instrument is an absolute treasure to play. Bigleaf Maple body with Sitka Spruce top, Tom’s custom French Polish shellac finish throughout, and on this Cremona Tom spec’d a rare short scale neck that makes left hand work effortless, and allows for easy bends. Falling across the fingerboard you’ll find several oak leaves rendered in MOP, and elsewhere this Bills Cremona is trimmed in flamed Maple and appointed with Ebony hardware. The humbucker is a custom Lollar with Ebony cover that ties into the pickguard.

If you’re looking for a 16 inch archtop that can keep up with you, that offers new avenues of play, is plain inspiration, this Tom Bills Cremona should fit the bill nicely.

We’re no strangers to Mirko Borghino’s work here at Dream Guitars. Not only is he the maker of John McLaughlin’s Shakti (here we’ve got one of his McLaughlin Signature Series in right now, check it out: https://www.dreamguitars.com/shop/builders/borghino-guitars.html), he also builds a wide range of steel and nylon string instruments. And then there’s creatures like the Mirragio 7. An archtop engineered for the veteren 7-string player, but also accessible and appealing to the 7-string-curious-6-string player. Effortless is the experience of playing this beauty from 2018. We currently have it set up with roundwounds, and it would also be a beast with flats–but currently it’s got a bit extra bite in the voice, which the custom I-Spira Replica Vintage pickup takes to handsomely. The body is figured European Maple with Ziricote bindings and appointments throughout; Italian Spruce top; and a flame Maple neck that manages to retain a C profile even as wide as it is with the added seventh string. That in itself is a feat.

Hands down, this 2018 Borghino Mirragio 7 is a complete instrument, designed for extended range while maintaining playability and comfort. Sky’s the limit.

Rainsong’s PA model combines a traditional, compact parlor shape with a modern Venetian cutaway for a perfectly proportioned, intimate playing experience. Though a little guitar, it packs a full, bright sound with RainSong’s trademark depth. With this custom build, they’ve gone two steps further by combining a nylon string setup with their Soundboard Fusion Technology (SFT) Cedar/Carbon Fiber hybrid top. Add an L.R. Baggs StagePro Element pickup system and you’ve got a custom Rainsong for all applications.

For this 2012 OM Custom model, the Breedlove team opted for a more traditional aesthetic, and they nailed it. Classic OM curves plus squared off headstock, plus Brazilian Rosewood body and Red Spruce top, with a clear and articulate voice that works well for fingers and pick work. Satin neck with a very soft V profile; open back Gotoh tuners; weighs in right at four pounds. This OM Custom comes to us from the Jayson Bowerman era of Breedlove guitars.

If Tony puts his name on it, it’s got our vote. This 2012 PRS Tony McManus Signature Private Stock is a well balanced, well oiled machine–clean and smooth across the registers, set up for both fingerstyle and flatpicks, and appointed with gorgeous Abalone birds and trim. Back and sides are Cocobolo Rosewood, with a European Spruce top and 25.25″ scale; plenty of tension for DADGAD, but still easy on the hands.

Bruce and Matt Petros know how to build what might be the perfect modern Parlor. This 2014 Dwende Parlor model has it all: headroom, clarity, balance, plus easy playability and a lightweight build (three pounds), and detailed apointments from tuners to tail. The back and sides are Claro Walnut, here paired with a Redwood top and short scale setup for a clean, expressive voice. Fit and finish is of course top notch. Celtic-inspired inlays sprawl across the various surfaces, and highlight the fingerboard with a woman or sprite figure cradling a guitar. The Butternut neck has a wider nut of 1 13/16″, which makes for an effortless lefthand experience for chords.

Kevin Ryan’s Signature Series guitars pull out all the stops, come with Kevin’s best tonewoods, and are appointed as heirloom instruments. This 2008 Mission Grand Concert SS has gorgeous, dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, paired up with a stiff Adirondack Spruce top for added power and projection, plus Kevin’s trademark slim neck profile and slinky playability. The voice is very round, with great dynamic range for a wide range of styles and attacks. The MGC body fits the midsize niche perfectly, making this a flattop that holds up well for both fingertips and flatpicks. The top, headplate, fingerboard, and rosette are upgraded with Select Blue Paua Abalone throughout, and at the nut, saddle, and bridge pins you’ll find Fossilized Walrus Ivory. Under the hood, this Ryan Signature Series is equipped with an L.R. Baggs iBeam pickup system, and outside this signature beauty is wrapped up in a custom Calton flight case.

If you want a big voice from a small place, this 2008 Beneteau 00 12-Fret is the dream machine that can take you there. Hearty and expansive midrange, round and articulate trebles, frankly great bass–it’s wide awake and singing sweetly. The Brazilian Rosewood body with Cedar top is part of that of course, but the rest is the alchemy of play time and Marc’s efforts during the build. The bridge is also an upgraded Brazilian Rosewood pyramid number that sets off the Cedar top and figured rosette; ditto for the bindings and headplate. The neck features a wider 1 13/16″ nut for an extra comfy lefthand experience, while the scale is 25.6″ to keep the tone crisp and defined.

Sporting some gorgeous and dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and 22-year-old Italian Spruce on top, the explosiveness of the voice is hardly surprising. Combining the best qualities of large and small-bodied guitars, the WS excels in a wide variety of situations. Impeccably balanced, its shapely curves and light weight make it exceedingly comfortable, while its ringing treble and articulate mids complement deep, rich bass.

Embracing their proprietary Soundboard Fusion Technology (SFT), each vintage-series guitar boasts the old-school look of a genuine spruce top. By fusing the tonewood with carbon fiber construction, the players gets the best of both worlds.

This WS Nashville is a custom build with white pinstripe appointments plus sunburst top and an L.R. Baggs StagePro Anthem pickup system.

Paper thin body, but a juicy voice. The Collings City Limits Jazz model weighs in just over five pounds and is only a little of 1.5″ deep, making this hollow body guitar a featherweight in your hands. This example comes to us from 2016 and is like new, dressed up withe a blonde finish that sets off the Honduran Mahogany body and Spruce top and is capped with Collings’ Broken Glass inlays along the fingerboard and headstock veneer. The pickup is a fiesty Lollar Johnny Smith model with tone and volume at the pickguard.

Balance, power, and a crisp response makes for an expressive and punchy player that works for just about everything–this 2013 Bourgeois OMC Soloist is a knockout. This beauty is in exellent condition, and frankly it’s itching to be played. African Blackwood back and sides pairs up with German Spruce for a snappy top end and rich bass; venetian cutaway grants extra access to those topmost frets; pyramid bridge and squared off headstock a nod to the American classic flattop ideal.

Balance is the name of game with this gorgeous 2014 Petros Celt 3–and it’s dressed from tuners to tail to play the part. Malaysian Blackwood back and sides pair with Italian Spruce and extensive celtic-style appointments throughout. A fantastic combination in our books, the Malaysian Blackwood (which is actually a member of the Ebony family) offers clarity and glassy note definition, and the Italian Spruce powers that up for great projection without making the guitar sound brittle. In fact, the voice is exceedingly velvety. Fit and finish are of course flawless throughout, and with a series of saddle shims included from Bruce and Matt Petros you can dial in the playing action for your specific needs at ease.

Sometimes, small packages come in big voices. This 2012 Petros Yellow Rose is sweet all the way down. Very smooth response, all glassy note definition and round, bell-like trebles. The overtone portfolio comes with deep pockets. Aesthetically, this Yellow Rose Parlor is dressed as only Bruce and Matt Petros can do it, with the best tonewoods around and extensive flower and vine inlays throughout. The back and sides are coveted Ceylon Satinwood, while the top is, of course, Yellow Cedar. The neck is also Yellow Cedar. The Yellow Rose motif is most present at the fingerboard extension, but you’ll find floral-and-vine work along the top trim, rosette, bridge pins and tuner knobs, even the truss rod cover and inside the guitar along the back center seam reinforcement strip.

An instrument designed for delighting every sense, this 2012 Petros Yellow Rose is waiting to be plucked and placed at the center of your collection.
