2003 Tippin 000T12-C, Brazilian Rosewood/Alpine Spruce
The only thing better than a Tippin? A Tippin that’s had a few years and a few thousand notes under its belt—this 2003 000T12-C is a petite-proportioned powerhouse. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides here to add malty warmth and overtones to the voice (with some lovely figure to boot), and an Alpine Spruce top for smooth projection and balance. Bill’s 000 is a natural fingerstyle guitar, here with a 25.4” scale + 12-fret neck (and cutaway) for a sweet mixture of power and warmth. Long scale meant we were able to tune down to DADGAD and keep the power and clarity, and we honestly didn’t want to put this one down afterwards. Slotted headstock with gold Waverly tuners, V neck; understated aesthetics with Abalone side dots and Ivoroid bindings. This Tippin has been well cared for and is in stellar condition.

Bill Tippin is one of our all-time favorite builders because he’s the complete package: voicing for modern clarity and power, pairing top shelf tonewoods with innovative inlay materials. This Crescendo is what happens when Bill takes the gloves off. Black Brazilian Rosewood that’s straighter than straight and 150 years old—salvaged Bearclaw “Salmon Lake” Sitka Spruce—wooden tree of life fretboard inlaid with gem quality Opals and Rubies—gold Waverly tuners and Abalone trim. Bill’s only ever seen three sets of Brazilian like this (and he nabbed them up as soon as he did), and this Rosewood gives this 2006 Crescendo an immensely colorful and enveloping bottom end. The balance across registers is exquisite, finely tuned for fingerstyle but with lots of presence and projection for strumming as well.
Will we ever see a guitar like this again? We don’t think so. If you’re interested in an heirloom guitar from Bill Tippin, this is your ticket.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, bill tippin guitars, al pettaway, fingerpicking, dadgad, brazilain, maple

There’s simply no one out there quite like Bill Tippin. His instruments astound both the eyes and the ears, and they play as easily as breathing. It is, hands down, an honor to offer his guitars to the world. We recently landed a gently used 2011 Crescendo with exceptional Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Swiss Moonspruce top that’s quickly stealing our hearts. Bill’s voiced this one with an ear for crystalline note definition and separation between the registers; the sort of voice that brings everything out in brilliant clarity. So you’ll want to be on your best behavior. Flamed Koa bindings throughout the build dovetail into a Ryan-style arm bevel that’s a joy to feel. Bill’s signature soundport is carved out of the upper bout on the bass side, and you’ll find Fire Opal and Blue Paua inlaid into the fretboard, set off by additional Koa and Waverly tuners with Black Pearl knobs.
There’s so much energy just waiting to be tapped into, this Crescendo can take whatever you throw it. When played softly, the dynamic range doesn’t suffer a jot, and the clean presence of the middle register keeps the tone even and enveloping. How does Bill manage to build such incredible guitars, time after time? We don’t know, but we’re glad he does. This 2011 Tippin Crescendo is not one to miss.Other keywords: brazilain, moon spruce, fingerstyle, finger style, hoffee, flight case, waverlies

Guitars like this are what get us out of bed in the morning. Bill Tippin is a dyed-in-the-wool master, the same goes for Al Petteway, and when the two get together the result is nothing short of inspirational. This is a 2009 Al Petteway Signature Crescendo with impeccable Brazilian Rosewood & Moonspruce—wood of this calibre is exceedingly rare, and it’s a blessing Bill got a hold of it in the first place. Brazilian Rosewood trim throughout, an arm bevel and beveled Venetian Cutaway/heel joint, and Bill outdid himself with custom Mexican Fire Opal inlays at the nut, and on both ends of the backstrip. You’ll find a soundport in the upper bout, and a custom Hoffee flight case to keep everything safe and sound.

Bill Tippin is one of our desert island builders, and this 2009 Crescendo is one of our desert island guitars. Simply gorgeous woods: bookmatched Cocobolo with sapwood, Sinker Redwood on top set off with Maple purflings and rosette. The strings respond sweetly to even a delicate attack, and we can’t praise the tone enough, from the string-to-string balance to the dynamic response and colorful bass. Waverly tuners keep the neck weight low, and Bill’s contoured Venetian Cutaway allows for easy upper fret access—a register where this Crescendo excels, unlike so many other steel string guitars. Additionally, there’s a K&K Pure Mini pickup installed (one of our personal favorites), and the whole package comes wrapped up in a Cedar Creek tweed hardshell case.

It’s not easy to build a 12 string that’s as responsive and clear as a 6 string, but that’s precisely what Bill Tippin has managed to pull off. This is an incredible 2009 Bravado with primo Brazilian Rosewood and lake salvaged Sitka Spruce and a Celtic appointment package that humbles the player with its clarity, power, and elegance. Right down to the details (read: Fossilized Buffalo Horn bridge pins) We love Bill’s work, and are always eager to represent it here, but this one caught us by surprise with just how perfectly everything comes together.
The Celtic knot work along the fretboard and headstock are comprised of intricately woven MOP and Abalone, and Bill added a soundport to the upper bout, and a Koa arm bevel to the lower, for creature comfort. All 12 tuners are Black Pearl Waverlies—one set of these tuners is stunning, to say nothing of two! And we love how the ruddy color of the sinker Sitka pairs with the Koa bindings and rich brown Brazilian Rosewood. This Tippin Bravado is ready for travel and the stage, too, with a custom Calton flight case and a Highlander IP-2 dual source mic/UST pickup system.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, 12-string, bravado 12 string, fingerstyle, leo kottke

It’s guitars like this 2005 Tippin Crescendo in Cuban Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce that gets us going in the morning. A livewire of a guitar that practically hums all by itself in the case, this gorgeous piece of luthierin’ by Bill Tippin is a dangerous player. Not only is the setup glassy and smooth, not only do the treble strings cut like a freshly honed knife, not only does it handle picks and fingertips with aplomb—this Crescendo does it all with style. And clarity. And that delicious dry crunch you find in a really good Mahogany-and-Adirondack guitar.
Take it down to altered tuning town, and this Tippin croons like the natives. Flatpicking fiddletunes in standard feels just as easy. Honestly, it’s baffling how much musicality Bill can pack into a single guitar. This is one you won’t want to miss.

Tickle us pink with excitement: this 2010 Tippin Pink Ivory Staccato in the shop! That namesake rarity lends a colorful flair to Bill’s art deco appointments and Port Orford Cedar top.
The voice has a flavor that rings uniquely to our ears, ears which have been exposed to a wide range of voices over the years. There’s something in the combination of dry mids and cool trebles (which bloom a moment after the initial attack) that sets it apart from other guitars. An incredible tone for slow, spacious arrangements where the treble strings can ring, and ring, and ring.
This piece of functional art is a trim stargazer at just under 4lbs, but it’s got quite a lot of shimmer and sustain for all that it weighs so little. Bill Tippin’s 2010 Pink Ivory Staccato: sweet and savory at the same time.

Some guitars can get by on their looks, and others’ claim to fame is their tone–but rare is the guitar which excels at both, its voice as rich and stimulating as the curve of its sides and the artwork inlaid across its body. The Bravado here comes from one of our all-time favorite builders, Bill Tippin, and is one such guitar. Starting with master grade Brazilian Rosewood for the back, sides, headstock veneers, and bridge, then graduating to Moon Spruce for the top, curly Koa bindings which flow into an arm bevel, before culminating with no less than nine different materials inlaid across the fretboard and headstock–Bill pulled out all the stops he had, and some others from down the street, when he made this guitar.
Themed in the style of New Orleans, the lavish inlays depict Koa vines carrying along Fossil–Ivory-and-MOP magnolia flowers (the state flower of Louisiana). The centerpiece at the fifth fret is a dazzling Opal bordered by marquetry in Maple and Bloodwood, and the expansive magnolia flower on the headstock is composed of Fossil Ivory chased with MOP for the petals and green and Blue Paua Abalone for the pistil. Countless must have been the hours which Bill spent painstakingly rendering these myriad flowers, leaves, fronds, and vines–hours which were also dedicated to voicing this Bravado, his largest body, to be incredibly responsive and flawlessly balanced. The bass notes alone will inspire you to new ways of thinking of the word “deep;” the trebles sparkle like so many Opals. If you thought no guitar could possess such sterlling qualities for both eye and ear, this 2008 Tippin Bravado will change your mind.

We’ve got another killer in the shop today: a 2007 Tippin Crescendo in immaculate condition. Only the finest straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood is on display here, paired with a Moon Spruce top and Curly Maple bindings. Bill Tippin’s most popular model, the Crescendo has the dimensions of a large-bodied guitar and the articulation of a much smaller one, with none of the drawbacks of either. The Moon Spruce top is perfectly voiced to achieve Tippin’s trademark sparkling highs and strong middle register, which blend seamlesslywith a low-end that is resonant and well-balanced. Articulation and projection are the name of the game here: fingerstylists will love the ease with which arrangements manifest across the Maple-trimmed Ebony fretboard. The tone has a warm richness to it like hot cider on a winter day. Tippin’s fit and finish is flawless: this is a guitar which plays as sinuously as it is constructed. This guitar has been lovingly played and maintained by one owner, but it’s time to pass the torch to the next lucky musician. This guitar comes with the original Calton hardshell case.

If we ever got a guitar from Bill Tippin which didn’t completely blow us away, we might need to hang up our hats and quit the business. Lucky for us (and you), that’s simply not the case: a Tippin guitar is incapable of sounding anything less than stunning. The Crescendo we’ve got here is proof of that. Custom-built for one of our clients, if it’s a feature Bill offers, you’ll find it on this guitar. From the asymetrical swooping soundport and arm rest bevel to Bill’s gorgeous two-piece Honduran Mahogany-and-Ebony carved neck block and Mother-Of-Pearl adorning every surface, this is a guitar which looks as amazing as it plays. Our client requested the best of the best, so Bill used a chocolate-dark set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and a creamy moon-harvested billet of Swedish Spruce for the top, which when combined produce a voice which has resounding depth, surgically precise seperation between the strings, and trebles with huge presence and unflagging sustain. All of that rich, fearsome tone has been gracefully bound up in an elegant display of Mother-Of-Pearl across the headstock, Ebony fretboard, Blackwood trim, African Blackwood rosette, and bridge pins. Fingerstyle or flatpicked, this Crescendo is more than capable to turn the simplest melody into a lush concerto.
