2022 Blazer & Henkes D-45
This guitar is built from Reserve Master Grade Brazilian Rosewood and Old Growth Adirondack Spruce, bringing these exceptional materials to their highest potential. Dressed in classic 45-style fashion, but make no mistake—this is not just about flash and looks. Sonically, it’s every bit as impressive as it is visually.
It comes with a full neck profile, a tortoise-style headplate with a torch inlay, ivoroid bindings, and 45-style abalone trim and appointments throughout.
But truly, this guitar speaks for itself. A magical creation from the workshop of Blazer & Henkes—one we will surely miss when it finds its next home.

Rudolph “Rudi” Blazer (of Blazer & Henkes fame) is a fantastic luthier, and this Jumbo from 2000 proves it. Gorgeous Birdseye Maple back and sides with Spruce top, and overall featherweight construction, make for an extremely energetic and snappy voice. It’s one you can really lean in to–in fact, we find we’re hardpressed to not lean on the gas as soon as we pick this one up. The Maple/Moon combo, with the big Jumbo curves, is bright but not shrill, powerful but not overpowering. This one grabs you and doesn’t want to let go.

When a good guitar calls, you answer. This 2016 B&H D-42 is such a guitar. Excellent projection and sustain, paired with great balance across the strings, makes for an extra articulate dreadnought. Sensitive enough for fingerstyle play, and with heaps of headroom for flatpicking. We’d expect no less! Alpine Spruce over Brazilian Rosewood with a shade top finish, 42-style Abalone appointments throughout, and gold Waverly tuners as the cherries on top. Build weight is 4.5lbs, and the neck has a full feel in hand with well-rounded V profile. This beauty was built in 2016!

A premium example of German lutherie duo Blazer & Henkes–this 1999 Déjà-Vu Phoenix D-45 is as stunning to the ears as it is to the eyes. Straight grained and light-colored Brazilian Rosewood back and sides is set up with a tight-grained Alpine Spruce top; extensive 45-style Abalone appointments throughout–and a fantastically wide open and colorful voice. This instrument sings with every single note. The neck has just a touch more girth for that proper prewar hard V profile (feels great), and the setup is, frankly, perfect. Fine finish checking only adds to the impression that this is a prewar powerhouse.

How sweet can a guitar be? Apparently, just a little bit sweeter. This 2010 Déjà Vu San Antonio 28 from Blazer & Henkes is what dessert would be if it also contained all the richness, vitamins, and nutrients of a three course meal. Which is to say, this B&H OM is the complete package. Receptive to a light attack, plus headroom for heavier, gorgeous tonewoods throughout, and an expansive midrange that makes for an enveloping voice that feels instantly familiar to your ear. The back and sides are Brazilian Rosewood, and on top they’ve used a set of Austrian Alpine Moonspruce with a bit of bearclaw figuring for added drama. Elsewhere, vintage 28-style appointments. Now, the practice of using moon-harvested Spruce goes back for hundreds of years, and Willi and Rudolph have garnered their premium supply from loggers who harvest strictly according to the traditional moon calendar for forestry, namely during a new moon phase when the water content inside wood cells is at its lowest and in the fall when Spruce trees are in their resting period. The result is a quality of Spruce that dries faster, matures more quickly, and is less prone to shrinking damage over time. We’ve always loved Moonspruce because, well, it sounds great! But there’s so much more that goes into making it such a premium top wood offering.

Sweet and expressive, with understated appointments, this 2014 Blazer & Henkes OM-28 is an absolute gem. The voice has lots of headroom, and is sensitive for fingerstyle play but has enough snap and projection for flatpicking as well. Truly, a does-it-all kind of guitar. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair with Austrian Alpine Moonspruce on top, and the 28-style appointments are based on the 1932 Martin original. The Spanish Cedar neck has a full soft V profile that is immediately comfortable for the left hand, and overall this B&H OM-28 weighs in under four pounds! And all that lightweight translates into added responsiveness and power.

A knockout D-28 from inimitable lutherie duo Blazer & Henkes. This 2014 build is like a complete meal: balanced, full, and a great talker. The voice is wide awake, with a particularly expansive midrange that very much fills it out. Superb. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Austrian Alpine Moonspruce top, Honduran Mahogany neck, and all of this comes as a rendition of the classic Martin 1937 D-28.

This is not your average Dreadnought. Wilhelm Henkes and Rudolph Blazer of Blazer & Henkes fame are true masters of lutherie, and this 2008 Phoenix 28 is here to prove it. Gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Austrian Alpine Moonspruce on top, and 28-style appointments in the prewar American fashion: this guitar has classic beauty, but there’s extra magic working under the hood with a forward shifted X and scalloped braces. The voice of this Dreadnought is exquisitely clear and resonant; it responds to every shift in attack, offering a crisp and articulate tone with blazing extra definition in the bass and trebles. The tonewoods have opened up handsomely in the past 10 years, and we love the neck carve and setup, it’s easy on the hands, easy on the fingers. We can’t find a single thing we don’t love about this Blazer & Henkes Phoenix 28.

We’re fortunate indeed to have an OM-42 from Blazer & Henkes in the shop. These two really know how to pull off the classic prewar sound and aesthetic; this example from 2011 is the proof in the pudding. A light-brown set of Brazilian Rosewood makes up the back and sides with a touch of flatsawn drama, paired with a colorful European Spruce top and light green Abalone trim with 42-style appointments. Ivoroid bindings and Waverly tuners round out the classic look. This OM-42 weighs under four pounds and has a lovely setup for fingerstyle play in Standard and lowered tunings as well; we also really enjoyed getting into some flatpicking with this one. The voice has enough power and presence to hold up well under a stronger attack, and still offer sweetness and rich overtones when plucked softly as well. The soft V neck has a wide, full in-hand feel that’s just lovely.

We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have two guitars in from German builders Blazer & Henkes. This fantastic little gem is the Milwaukee 000-44 model in Alpine Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood. Not surprisingly, the tone of this guitar is jaw dropping, deceptively full and loud. From bass to treble you will find this instrument has enough power and punch to compete with its larger-bodied brethren. The appointments are tastefully done, Split Herringbone and Abalone and engraved inlays combinined to give an elegant but not too flashy look. We have been blown away by the quality and tone of these Blazer & Henkes guitars, but they are rare in the United States, so don’t miss the chance to own one of them!

Rudolph Blazer started his career as a luthier in 1971 as an apprentice with one of the well-established guitar manufacturers of Germany. After gaining experience through years of repair work he opened his own shop in Stuttgart. In 1980 he moved to the town of Tuebingen, concentrating on the serial production of traditional steel string guitars.
Some years before joining Rudolph Blazer, Wilhelm Henkes started building fretted instruments and later acquired the traditional master certification as luthier. Together they built more than 400 guitars and mandolins in their first Tuebingen workshop.
Through building their own guitars in the style of traditional American steel string guitars and through specializing in the restoration and repair of American pre-war instruments, they realized how similar these guitars were to the traditional German guitars in construction and materials.
Their new Tuebingen workshop opened in 1996. As aficionados of old American guitars, they have been creating many replicas of these wonderful instruments, authentic not only in their looks, but also in design and construction.
In addition to that, Blazer & Henkes are also specialists for the creation of modern guitar design, delicate pearl inlays as well as for restoration and repair work of vintage guitars.
