2016 Doerr Trinity Select, Wenge/Cedar
The combination of Red Cedar on top and Wenge for the back and sides makes for great balance across the registers, and a little extra sweetness in the trebles. The Trinity Select body is 14 1/2” across the lower bout, making this a smaller instrument in hand and very comfortable to play. The neck is 12 frets to the body with a short 25” scale for added playing ease. Tom’s Select appointment package is here rendered with gorgeous Abalone trim at the headstock, fingerboard, and top. At the lower bout you’ll find an arm bevel incorporated into the Rosewood bindings, and flawless fit n finish throughout.

This 2013 Doerr Legacy Select is one smooth operator. Indian Rosewood body with Cedar top, a subtle arm bevel for added playing ease, and a slim neck profile to complete the picture. Dark Abalone trims out the top and the rosette, and adds some pop to the sharp aesthetic. The voice is crisp and quick, with a round midrange that is excellent for fingerstyle. With a 15 5/8″ lower bout, this Doerr Legacy Select also has enough headroom for some flatpicking and strumming as well. This beauty was Plek’d in 2020, and the frets are still looking perfect today.

Tom Doerr’s Solace model offers great volume and headroom, but without compromising on the ergonomics front at all. This 2008 Solace is just that: powerful, and effortless. Slim neck profile, Indian Rosewood body with Swiss Spruce top, K&K Pure Mini pickup–plus it’s opened up handsomely in the intervening years.

Sweetness paired with power, and articulate across the registers. This 2008 Solace Select from the late Tom Doerr sings in your hands at a light touch, but has plenty of headroom to dig into as well; the 16 1/4″ lower bout Cedar top and actively-braced Madagascar Rosewood back can attest to that. To keep a guitar of this size effortless to play, Tom outfitted it with not only a cutaway and wraparound arm bevel, but also introduced a subtle body wedge into the build to keep the bass side a touch slimmer, and therefore easier to get your right arm around. This Doerr plays handsomely, indeed. The multi-laminated neck is stable and slender in-hand, and transforms into a gorgeous routed out channel at the back of the headstock and at the heelcap. That, combined with the glassy fit and finish elsewhere, paints the picture of a well-dressed modern flattop that’s ready for just about anything. In 2017, Tom retopped this Solace with the current Cedar top and his latest bracing designs. So it’s got that openness that only comes with being played for years, plus the lively and quick response of a newer build. A Cedar Creek case keeps it safe when (rarely) not in use, and a Schatten pickup to boot.

Glass action beautiful. Tom Doerr had a delicate hand for crafting resonant, responsive modern flattops; just look at the fit and finish on this 2018 Trinity Select for proof of that. Flawless, with an exquisite attention to detail, executed in a high gloss finish to really make this one pop. Amazon Rosewood back and sides pair up with Swiss Moonspruce on top, plus an arm bevel and florentine cutaway for creature comforts. A 25-26” multiscale fretboard makes for easy playability and a wide dynamic range, both in standard as well as altered tunings. The voice is equal parts crisp and strong, especially for a smaller bodied instrument. Part of that is of course Tom’s skill in voicing the top to be extra responsive, and the other part being that multiscale setup for a bit more punch in the bass register. All in all, this 2018 Doerr Trinity Select is a shining example of Tom’s legacy to the world of lutherie and fingerstyle guitars.

The Doerr Legacy Select is an experience in elegance, with a smooth response across the registers. This particular beauty comes to us from 2007, so has had several years to open up (and open up it has), and features some gorgeous, dramatic Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides with Swiss Spruce on top. Additional upgrades include a BRW bridge, rosette, and headplate. Tom Doerr voiced this one for exquisite clarity and balance; it’s a primo fingerstyle guitar across several tunings.

We’re always happy to get our hands on a guitar from Tom Doerr’s shop, so when this Legacy Select from 2010 came up we made sure it found its way onto our wall. This is an excellent example of Doerr’s Legacy model–his most popular design–with a gorgeous chocolate set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, and a Swiss Spruce top which exudes clarity and powerful projection. One crack of the low E string, however, and you’ll find the bass is thunderous, with a well-defined edge that works well for fingerstyle arrangements. For that matter, all the registers are well-defined and present, making this one of the most well-balanced instruments we have in the shop right now!
If the devil’s in the details, then this is one devilishly beautiful guitar: micro-beveled bindings for player comfort, Florentine Cutaway, L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup, subtle routed channel on the back of the headstock which matches the seams of the neck laminations. We’re grateful to Tom for maintaining a perfectionist’s attention to detail across every aspect of this guitar’s construction, from the finish to the tone. Here’s an additional demo with our own Al Petteway: https://youtu.be/Atrxp_R7KWM

This beauty from 2016 is an every-note-counts kind of guitar. Tom Doerr’s such an accomplished builder, we love to spend time with any of his builds. Here’s a beautiful example of his upgraded Signature Series in the Legacy Select body (small jumbo for power, drive, and responsiveness in equal measure)—decked out with a striking set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and Adirondack Spruce on top. Ebony bindings tie them together, plus a svelte Ryan-style arm bevel for creature comforts.
And then there’s the multiscale setup. 26 inches at the bass to 25 at the trebles makes a great player for C tunings and right on up to Standard—it’s a fingerstyle masterpiece.Other keywords: luthier, lutherie, guitarbuilding, doerr guitars, fingerpicking, modern guitar, gotoh, fan fret, fanned fret, multi scale, multi-scale

Now here’s a guitar that does. it. all. We’re big fans of multiscale instruments for all the reasons: better intonation and string tension across a wide range of tunings, easy playability for the left hand, and it looks so darn cool. Tom Doerr does it right, too. This is a Solace Select from 2012 that boasts a 27-25.25” multiscale fretboard! Sky’s the limit for tuning territory. The body is African Blackwood and Sitka Spruce—and Tom confided in us that this was the finest set of Blackwood he’s ever worked with. And we can see why: we’ve never seen ABW with such dramatic birdseye figure!
The tone is just incredible. Powerful, invigorating, room-filling. The bass register is huge, and with the 25.25” top end the trebles and mids strike a sweet balance between warmth and crispness. This Doerr works like magic in such a wide range of settings, we really think this Solact Select is a powerhouse all-around guitar.Other keywords: luthier, lutherie, guitarbuilding, doerr guitars, fingerstyle, fingerpicking, modern guitar, gotoh

Tom Doerr, we adore your work. This 2016 Solace Select is what modern lutherie is all about: agile, responsive, voiced with crisp definition and a dynamic, colorful palette. Add to that fantastic tonewoods and playability and intonation innovations, and it’s a dream machine, baby. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top—multiscale fretboard at 26 to 25 1/8 inches—arm bevel plus beveled bindings all around.
Everything you throw at this Doerr Solace Select, it eats right up. We especially loved taking this one down in CGCGAD, where the added bass tension of the multiscale setup made this tuning absolutely sing.Other keywords: luthier, lutherie, guitarbuilding, doerr guitars, fingerstyle, fingerpicking, modern guitar, gotoh

Tom Doerr brings a lot to bear on this Brazilian-and-Cedar beauty. The 2017 Legacy Select is dressed to the nines, and really shines when you put finger to string (or flatpick, this Doerr really handles both with aplomb). Dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with a Cedar top—and Tom marries the Cedar warmth with an incredibly crisp and explosive bass and middle register that makes this stand apart from the regular Cedar crowd. The Legacy Select has a lot to say, and isn’t afraid of raising the decibel ceiling to do it. Additionally, Tom added an arm bevel for creature comfort, as well as micro beveling the entire binding package for a touch of extra ease. Really, we’re impressed by the quality of every. single. detail. And there are a lot of details on hand here, from those bevels to the inlaid bridge, dramatically swooping heel, and the channel routed out of the center of the backplate of the headstock to let the neck’s Maple center pass through in plain sight.
We can’t recommend this Doerr Legacy Select more highly: it does it all, and it does it all exceedingly beautifully.Other keywords: luthier, lutherie, guitarbuilding, doerr guitars, fingerstyle, fingerpicking, modern guitar, gotoh, cedar creek

Here we have another lovely Legacy Select by luthier Tom Doerr. This guitar has a sweetness and fullness of voice that we have come to know and love in Tom’s instruments. Made with the classic pairing of East Indian Rosewood and one of the finest, tightest-grained Sitka Spruce tops we’ve ever seen, this guitar has an incredible velocity of sound. Light playing results in a firm, confident voice that does especially well on Fingerstyle tunes. This has a great low action for ease on the hands. It has a couple of cosmetic issues from finish pulling up around the tuners and the heel, but is otherwise in marvelous condition. If you’re looking for uncompromising tone and playability, and are looking to save a dime or two, this is as good of a find as you’re likely to encounter. Come play it and see for yourself what sets this one apart from its peers.

My journey towards building the finest possible fingerstyle guitar I can craft began one evening in 1996 when I attended a Phil Keaggy concert. Seeing him play changed the course of my life. Up to then I had been playing an electric guitar and a cheap mass-produced acoustic guitar; but after hearing Phil, I began to concentrate on fingerstyle.
Shortly afterwards I wondered what guitar Phil played, and with some research found that it was a handbuilt Jim Olson guitar. In 1997 I heard of a local builder here in Michigan named Bill Wise of Charis Acoustics, who had just begun building acoustic guitars. From Bill I ordered my first handbuilt guitar, and received it in 1998. In 2000 I ordered my second guitar from Bill; and it was while he was building it that the luthier bug bit me. In 2001 I made my first guitar, and three years later went full time in guitar building.
In 2008 I attended a master class on top voicing, knowing that it would take my building skills to another level. I went to California and spent a week under the instruction of master luthier Ervin Somogyi. There I gained valuable understanding concerning voicing and design functions, providing me the insight necessary to produce the rich sound I pursue in each guitar I create.
When I first began in 2001, I was influenced by luthiers Jim Olson and Kevin Ryan; and my first guitars resembled theirs in many aspects. And since 2002 I was influenced by other builders such as Jeff Traugott, Michi Matsuda, and many others. In all my experiences, I learned to appreciate simplicity, along with details. In 2009 I took the sum of my learning, knowledge, and experience and created my newest line of guitars.
Today, the Doerr guitar is truly unique to my own experiences and design, and reflects my uncompromised commitment to detail. When people see my guitars, I want them to know with confidence that it is a Doerr.
We met Tom when he brought a few of his early guitars to our shop for critique. We could tell he was going to be a special builder and a few years later he just blew us away. He craftsmanship is clean as can be and he has discovered a voice that is pure and sweet. We are delighted to now be a dealer for Tom Doerr guitars and for our relationship to have come this far.
