2010 Ebata D Madagascar/European
Hiro Ebata, like Michi Matsuda and Mario Beauregard, apprenticed in the shop of the great master Luthier Ervin Somogyi. Hiro is now building from his own shop in Japan and carrying his teachers work proudly within his own. This Ebata D guitar is a fingerstyle Dreadnought modeled on the Somogyi Modified D design. The Madagascar Rosewood and European Spruce body is more curvey than a standard D, so it’s easier to hold when sitting and will also suit player that hold the guitar on the left leg. The deep cutaway provides easy access to the entire fingerboard. The voice is angelic, big and open, a modern fingerstyle guitar in every way. Hiro also includes elegant touches like the fine perflings on every surface including the sides and a perfectly compensated saddle.

Here we have a tremendously versatile OM from Luthier Hiro Ebata of Japan. Hiro is known for having studied with Ervin Somogyi and the lineage is easy to see and to hear. This OM is superb, we all really love it. The voice is very strong and full with sincere trebles that really sing out. Hiro’s OM shape, like Somogyi’s, is slightly oversized so the bass response is slightly enhance compared to typical Martin size OM guitars. The shorter 25″ scale and fingerstyle nut and saddle make it a joy to play. Hiro’s craftsmenship is nothing short of spectacular, clean lines and perfect joints. The Adirondack Top adds power and headroom to the clarity and sparkle of the Indian Rosewood box. Super guitar in every way. If you’ve longed for a Somogyi here is a direct descendant of that wonderful family.

Hiro Ebata spent several years in the shop of Ervin Somogyi at the same time as Michi Matsuda and Mario Beauregard. Three young makers that show the value of old world apprenticeship and how important study of the craft is. Ervin is one of our very favorite luthiers and regarded as a true Master in the world of Lutherie. This J is perfectly crafted with lovely details including Madagascar Rosewood, European Spruce, bound and bordered fingerboard, multi-layered headplate and perflings around top, back and sides. The voice is huge, with beautiful dread-like bass and authoritative trebles that make melodies soar. This guitar is truly satisfying played fingerstyle, flatpicked or strummed. This is a soulful and expressive instrument that we are extremely proud to offer to you.

The body wood of this guitar sets the tone with it’s sapwood center and side purfling created by mother nature. Hiro added an elegantly bound fingerboard and his stunning headstock which incorporates and front and back plate with mitered ‘frames’ on the sides. Hiro was born and raised in Japan. In 1992 he started working at Canon Inc. as an electrical enginner. So, guitar making was just for fun until 2004. At the end of 2003, he quit Canon to master guitar making. From the beginning of 2004, he started learning it under Ervin Somogyi at his shop in Oakland California. For the next 18 months, Hiro learned many things form Ervin, mainly voicing of a guitar. In July of 2005, he went back to Japan and opened his shop in Yamato city, Kanagawa. Now he makes his own style guitar using his voicing method.
