This Froggy Bottom Model K Limited comes to us from 2007. What a remarkable guitar! The folks at Froggy Bottom certainly have mastered the formula for jumbo-sized guitars. With Adirondack Spruce on top and “The Tree” Mahogany for the back and sides, this instrument is heavily adorned with abalone and comes equipped with a Fishman Rare Earth Soundhole Pickup with Microphone. Koa bindings outline a gorgeous abalone trim, and there’s a delightful surprise on the heel cap—a frog inlay, which is very on-brand. This guitar has been well cared for and played enough to be fully awakened.

This Model K Deluxe comes to us from 2005 with 5A Brazilian Rosewood back and sides plus Adirondack Spruce on top, Curly Maple bindings, and a tasteful hawk scrimshawed into the heelcap. 1 3/4″ at the nut with a slightly slender neck profile; K&K Pure Mini pickup installed–and all of this comes wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case. The position markers are fleur de lis style, rendered in sparkling Abalone that matches the ubiquitous Froggy frog at the headstock (bound to match the body bindings). Gold Waverly tuners round it out.

In 2020, to celebrate an astounding 50 years in the business, Froggy Bottom Guitars pulled out all of the stops for an exclusive series of guitars, and we’re grateful to visit with this one in the shop today. This R14 Limited is number four of only 18, and is outfitted with FB’s AAAAA pre-CITES Brazilian Rosewood and master grade Adirondack Spruce on top; heelcap of mammoth ivory engraved by Petria Mitchell; #7 style position markers and froggy logo engraved by Glenn Carson; a gorgeous sunburst from Chris Bavaria. The R14 body pulls from the L-00 family with a 14-fret neck and short scale setup. The result, with BRW and Adirondack, is a quick, responsive, and most importantly expressive sound.

The voice is wide awake and a lovely mix of warmth and power, a natural result from combining Madagascar Rosewood back and sides (premium set, quarter sawn and arrow-straight) with Adirondack Spruce on top. Starting his woodworking career in a Connecticut boat works at the age of 10, under the tutelage of craftsmen– some of whom had come up working and sailing square-rigged ships in the late 19th Century – Michael Millard brings a unique perspective and set of skills to the task of building of individual instruments for individual musicians.
In 1970, Michael built his first Froggy Bottom Guitar in his apartment on New York’s Lower East Side.
In October of 1970, Michael had begun working at Gurian Guitars on Grand Street in New York City.
Michael’s first two Froggy Bottom Guitars were essentially Gurian shapes with significant adjustments: a lighter and different bracing pattern for the top and – what has become a Froggy Bottom trademark – high, thin, and highly arched back braces, which produced two lively and active plates for the instruments.
“Every Froggy Bottom I made after that,” Michael says, “has always been my own work.”
The goal of the company remains to build instruments that are capable of responding to and exceeding the functional needs and desires of individual players, and to provide guitars that spur the imagination and music of their owners.
