2003 Gallagher Doc Watson Mahogany/Sitka
Originally presented to the winner of the 2003 Merlefest guitar picking contest, we are happy to now offer this fine Gallagher Dreadnought to you. We have one of Gallagher‘s more popular models on our hands here, their Doc Watson Edition, complete with Mahogany back and sides and Sitka Spruce top.
Lots of bark to this bad boy, and a meaty midrange that absolutely sings when played with an aggressive attack. Definitely a guitar for flatpickers, this is a Dreadnought which will project a complex tone colored by great low-end depth with the best of them. Furthermore, this guitar straddles the line between the traditional—with its herringbone trim and tortoise-style pickguard—and the modern—with its Florentine cutaway and asymmetrical headstock.
This guitar comes with a TKL hardshell case.

This baby was built by Don Gallagher in 1997 for uber-picker Steve Kaufman. It’s in fantastic shape and sounds as big as it looks. She’s a beautiful sunburst cutaway made from Brazilian/Engleman, with some really sweet cosmetic touches to set her off. This guitar will reward a player who spends some time mastering her low B string. And the Fishman matrix pickup makes her ready for prime time. Give her a test drive — we’re sure you’ll have as much fun as we have!

This is the most beautiful Gallagher we’ve seen to date. It’s crafted from a very rare set of Brazilian Rosewood from Mike Longwood’s (of Martin Guitars) personal collection and it is first rate, the kind builders lust over. It’s paired with a very silky Sitka top for an angelic voice that is warm and complete. The Dogwood inlay is stunning and accompanied by Maple bindings on the body, neck and head as well as an abalone top border, bridge inlays and very rare abalone herringbone backstrip. Again, the Brazilian Rosewood here is phenomenal, truly rare and special. This is a very unique Gallagher with an amazing tone.

In 1963, J.W. Gallagher, a skilled woodworker, sawed a dreadnought guitar in half in order to figure out how it was made. J.W. had recently lost his job making scale-model airplanes and rockets when the Slingerland drum factory in Shelbyville, Tenn., hired him to set up a production line for their new Shelby guitar. The Shelby was an inexpensive guitar that served as Slingerland’s foray outside of drumstick making. J.W. and his son, Don, worked in the Slingerland factory for a few years, but J.W. wanted to build instruments with the same quality and care that he put into his furniture. So, in 1965, J.W. Gallagher built the first Gallagher guitar. The Gallagher Guitar Company has been producing quality handmade guitars ever since.
