2001 Gibson AJ Custom Shop, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Take a load off and pick up this powerhouse Gibson AJ if you’re looking for a helluva time. You’ll need to hold on and keep up, because it’s got heaps of energy and it’s raring to go. This unique Custom Shop comes from 2001 and is so wide awake, it’s scary. Equally at home with fingers as with picks, and it plays great with both a light touch and a more aggressive attack. Kevin Kopp (of Kopp Guitars fame) was working in Gibson’s Custom Shop team when this order came down the line, so no surprise that this one’s got some extra heat in the sauce, so to speak. This beauty is dressed to the nines with Pearl trim, as well as engraved MOP position markers such as you’d otherwise only see on a Gibson banjo fretboard, and they went with a 30s-style sunburst in ultra thin Nitrocellulose Lacquer. As a result of said thinness, there are several finish checks, which we find only adds to the vintage vibes. Old growth Brazilian Rosewood back and sides—gorgeous stuff—plus Adirondack Spruce on top makes for an absolute beast of a guitar. Do yourself a favor, snag this one before it croons itself right out the door.

The iconic Gibson Flying V—here in its rare V2 form, made only 1979-1982. The V2 was engineered by Tim Shaw to add a sculpted, three dimensional effect to the classic V shape, as well as his unique boomerang humbuckers. This one from 1979 plays handsome as butter with a fretless wonder setup, and comes wrapped in it’s original case to boot.

A gorgeous, mostly original Gibson F4 from 1920. Figured Maple body with Spruce on top and a Varnish finish throughout, Ivoroid bindings and half rope rosette trim, original inlaid tuners and pickguard—it’s a sweetheart. Gibson wasn’t using adjustable bridges until the 1920s, so we believe this bridge was added afterwards, although the footprint of the bridge matches the impressions in the top finish. If it is replaced, it appears to have been done very early in its life. Our repair staff recently went over it from tuner to tail and have given it a clean bill of health (and refretting it for a killer setup).

2011 saw Gibson offer an exclusive run of Historic 1959 Reissue Les Pauls boasting hand selected materials and hardware by the Custom Shop. These LPs are powerhouses. Figured Maple top with Washed Cherry finish over Mahogany body and neck, plus a TonePros bridge and tailpiece with deep studs, ’57-recreated humbuckers, and the ’59 neck profile that’s smooth, round, and fantastically effortless in hand. These special Burstbuckers can really rip when you lean in, but can also offer a buttery, round flavor depending on attack. The two volume, two tone knob arrangement plus three-way switch will feel immediately familiar, as will the solid build weight (under 8lbs; slim for an LP). Those four knobs are all push-pulls, too (bass tone: Phase Reversal, neck tone: kill switch, bass volume: split bridge, neck volume: split neck). This beauty comes wrapped in the original Gibson case, and comes with an uninstalled pickguard and COA.

We love the amazing array of reissues that Gibson has offered over the years, and we especially love those that come out of their Nashville Custom Shop. Enter this well-oiled machine, a Nashville ’63 ES-335 Block Reissue from 2013 with hardly a mark on it. Laminated Maple body with solid Maple center block and one-piece Mahogany neck; custom with a variation of the Burstbucker similar to the Live Bucker of the LPRO and LPR9 , but with lower output at the neck and more in the bridge with differential winding; aluminum stopbar tailpiece; Pearloid block inlays. The neck is the slim-n-slick profile of the early ‘60s that feels effortless in hand, and the setup on this one fits the sweet spot for both light and more aggressive attacks. The 335 semi-hollow design is a classic that is equally at home in so many different styles, it’s no wonder these guitars continue to be so popular. Additionally, this beauty comes out of the Nashville shop, where Gibson’s tight build quality is held to even higher standards—the Nashvilles are consistently top notch, and this 2013 ES-335 Reissue is no exception.

In 2014 Gibson collaborates with founding member of the Black Crowes, Rich Robinson, on an exclusive run of 500 ES-335s, a nail-for-nail recreation of Robinson’s ’63 ES-335 which was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 (and later painstakingly restored). This beauty is wrapped up with period correct faded Cherry finish from Gibson’s VOS process, Burstbucker pickups (#1 at the neck and a hotter #2 at the bridge), and a nod to the original’s “Custom Made” plate covering stopbar stud holes. Small block inlays on a Rosewood fingerboard, plus a beefy Bigsby vibrato, round out the looks. These Burstbuckers are sweet and juicy, and are infinitely adaptable to a wide range of genres; the Maple semi-hollow body also adds sustain, color, and feedback resistance. This Rich Robinson Signature has all the mojo we’d expect from a true ’63—plus the playability of a like new, well-oiled machine.

The ubiquitous Gibson L-1 came in many forms, originally an archtop in the 20s and later as a flattop from 1926-1937. This beauty comes in right at the middle in 1930 with a Mahogany body and Adirondack Spruce top, stained sunburst, and the wider 14 3/4” lower bout that collectors and players both agree make for the better-sounding beast. Our repair folks have gone over this one from tuner to tail and we’re happy to announce it has a clean bill of health!

A beautiful example of the 1960s Gibson legacy. This is a gorgeous Super 400CN-WAL coming to us from 1969, and from the Scott Chinery collection along the way. You can find it with its own spread in The Chinery Collection: 150 Years of American Guitars! Figured Maple back and sides with a carved Spruce top, Flame Maple neck, and original gold hardware. The back and sides feature a unique walnut stain that really sets off the honey amber Spruce top. The original pickguard has since succumbed to time (remaining fragments included with purchase), and later replaced with a period correct replica. The instrument has been recently outfitted with an acoustic pickguard (the original, nonfunctioning Dearmond pickup and replica guard are also included with purchase). The voice is characterized by a complexity and airiness that is reminiscent of a modern archtop responsiveness. Lively, expressive, and enveloping.

The ES-330 remains one of the all-time favorite instruments from the Gibson factory. The fully hollow, thin-line electric guitar matches the classic curves of Gibson’s archtops with slim sides and lightweight construction (here weighing in at just over six pounds), and this example from 1965 is set up with the original P90 pickups the voice has added warmth and presence that shines through in a wide range of settings. The ES-330TD is fantastically versatile, and the setup here is smooth and glassy. Perfect for both fingerstyle Jazz and a harder Blues attack, and everything in between. The original sunburst is intact and pairs nicely with the aged bindings and unbound F holes. Original beveled pickguard installed, as are the reflector cap knobs. Nylon saddles and tailpiece, bridge assembly also original.

Add to Compare1935 Gibson Nick Lucas, Maple/Adirondack Spruce
The Nick Lucas model is consistently sought out as one of the finest sounding and exclusive vintage Gibsons in existence, having only been made from 1928 to 1941, and in that time undergoing a number of transformations. What began as a 12-fret flattop with a 13 1/2” lower bout eventually settled in 1935 as the 14-fret powerhouse with an extra inch across the lower bout and a 4 5/8” body depth, resulting in an injection of extra power and bass response into an otherwise warm, intimate voice. This guitar sings like a big guitar but in a small package–there’s a reason why so many modern builders have attempted to recreate the Nick Lucas model. The V neck is chunky and familiar in hand, and is largely mark free, as is the rest of the guitar. This Gibson comes to us all the way from 1935, approaching a hundred years old, but is remarkably well preserved. Aside from the frets and case, all the components appear to be original, and we don’t believe the neck has been reset before (in spite of the fact that the setup is still easy on the hands, with good break angle at the saddle). Vintage Gibsons have a reputation of not weathering the years very well, but this ’35 Nick Lucas is the exception.
The sunburst is darker and tighter than we what we’d expect from a flattop of this period, which leads us to guess that it may have been a custom order at the time of construction. However, the figure of the Maple still manages to shine through the back and sides, especially at the waist, and ditto for the incredibly tight-grained Adirondack Spruce top.
It’s vintage guitars like this Nick Lucas that get us out of bed in the morning. They’ve been around long enough to really wake up and have something to say, and we cherish the time we get to visit with them. But, this Gibson needs to find its new home, and we fear it won’t be with us. Do reach out if you’d like to discuss this piece with us, we’re more than happy to answer any questions you have.Other keywords: gutiar, 14 fret, blues guitar, flat top, adriondack, red maple, shade top, sun burst

If we’ve played a finer vintage Gibson, we can’t remember when. This 1936 Advanced Jumbo is just incredible—plays like butter, rings out like so many bells, mostly original and with a clean bill of health from our repair folks. Gibson only built about 300 of these their cream of the crop slope shoulder dread; quite the upgrade from their “workingman” Jumbo model. The AJ features a slim neck profile for fast playability, and a 1 11/16” nut width to boot. 25.5” scale length, enlarged 4” soundhole, and a slightly tighter waist further separate the AJ from the standard Gibson Jumbo of the era, as well as the diamond and arrowhead fingerboard inlay pattern.
We love this guitar for so many reasons, it’s hard to settle on one. So we won’t! It plays great—has a powerful and woody voice that’s been well seasoned for the past 85 or so years—is in great shape for more music-making—it’s got the right amount of play wear and mojo to really look the part of a proper prewar Gibson—and it’s one of approximately only 300 built before Gibson revived the model in 1990.Other keywords: gibson guitar, vintage, pre-war, sloped shoulder, adriondack, adirondack, shade top, sunburst

The Les Paul from 1959 is one of the most sought-after electrics of all time. And Gibson’s Collector’s Choice series is the most faithful reproduction of this legendary instrument. Here we have #4 from 2012, “Sandy,” an exacting copy of a ’59 LP that had cream of the crop traits: tightly flamed Maple top, faded “dirty lemon” sunburst, zebra-coil humbuckers, low neck pitch and butter-smooth playability. In order to recreate this LP down to the tiniest details, Gibson’s team went so far as to digitally scan the entire original for its neck and top carves, even the grain pattern of the Flame Maple top and play wear patterns.
This work of art is more than a simple reissue, it’s more than a relic’d reproduction. It’s the recreation of a piece of electric guitar perfection, right down to the studs.SOLD Read moreScale Length 24.625 in Nut Width 1.68 in String Spacing 2 in Woods Maple - Figured, Mahogany Add to Compare1939 Gibson SJ-100, Mahogany/Adirondack Spruce
Big boy, big sound, big personality! 1939 Gibson SJ-100, anybody? Adirondack Spruce over Mahogany, 5-piece Maple neck, and a unique set of appointments and design features that step the SJ-100 outside the bounds of a regular Gibson Super Jumbo flattop. For the early 1939 SJ-100, Gibson used a mustache bridge with individual saddles, stairstep headstock, triple bindings on top, and butterfly Kluson tuners. 17 inches across the lower bout for a thunderous bass response, precisely what you’d expect from a flattop this fierce, and this beauty is only a little over five pounds in weight; easy to keep on playing. Original case, original components, and our repair shop went over the SJ-100 from tuner to tail to make sure it’s up to snuff and ready for action. They confirmed that the finish is original to boot, with some finish repairs over the years.

A sweet piece of vintage finery! We’ve landed a gorgeous Gibson ES-335 from 1963 in cherry finish, nylon nut and saddles, and the chunkier neck profile desired by collectors and players alike. Additionally, the pickup configuration on this ES-335 is one of the rare PAF transition versions: the neck pickup is PAF, the bridge pickup patented.
Slinky setup, and weighing in just over eight pounds, this 335 is heaps of fun to play. We love the cherry finish; it’s got the marks to prove it’s been making lots of good music for decades, with the finish worn down on the neck for that smooth, smooth feel.Other keywords: gibson guitars, semihollow, semi-hollow, patent applied for, kluson
The home of Gibson electric guitars today is “Gibson USA,” built in 1974 in Nashville specifically for the production of Gibson’s Les Paul guitars. Although the entire guitar industry went through a slump in the late ’70s, the spirit of innovation remained strong at Gibson. In response to a growing demand for vintage stylings, Gibson tapped its rich history and reissued the dot-neck version of the ES-335 in 1981 and the flametop sunburst Les Paul in 1982. At the same time, two legendary guitarists joined Gibson- B.B. King in 1980 with the Lucille model and Chet Atkins in 1982 with his new concept of a solidbody acoustic guitar.Gibson world headquarters moved to Nashville in 1984 with the closing of the Kalamazoo plant. The financially troubled company was rescued in January 1986 by Henry Juszkiewicz and David Berryman, and the new owners quickly restored Gibson’s reputation for quality as well as its profitability.Today’s Gibson electric guitars represent the history as well as the future of the electric guitar. The models whose designs have become classics-the ES-175, ES-335, Flying V, Explorer, Firebird, SGs and Les Pauls-are a testament to Gibson’s wide appeal, spanning more than four decades of music styles. Gibson’s close relationship with musicians is manifest in endorsement models from King, Atkins and jazz greats Howard Roberts and Herb Ellis, plus new Les Pauls made to the personal specifications of rock stars Jimmy Page and Joe Perry. In 1994, Gibson’s Centennial year, the new Nighthawk model won an industry award for design, setting the stage for a second hundred years of Gibson quality and innovation.
