The Goodall Concert Jumbo Cutaway packs several guitars’ worth of power and tone in an easy-playing, medium-sized flattop package. Versatility is the name of the game here, and this number from 2006 has got it to spare. This beauty features incredible AAA Robusta back and sides, Red Eucalyptus, which has a gorgeous, tightly interlocked grain pattern and rich chatoyance, paired with a Goodall classic Port Orford Cedar on top. The combination of these two yields a smooth, very balanced voice. The trebles cut nice and clean, and we love how easily this one shifts from loud and energetic to quiet and elegant.

A beauty for all the senses! Well, maybe don’t lick this one. Here’s what it looks like when you’ve got primo Koa on hand as a luthier based in Hawaii—this 2005 Goodall KGCCK Royal Hawaiian. Tightly flamed Koa back, sides, and top, hand selected by Goodall for their flagship! Purpleheart bindings to set it off, and James’ beach scene inlaid with Pearl and Abalone at the 14th fret. The voice is lively, crisp, and quick, which is also a descriptor we’d use for the slick playability and easy setup. An L.R. Baggs Anthem SL pickup system translates that straight to the stage. This Royal Hawaiian came out of James’ Maui shop in 2005.

Powerhouse 12-string, anyone? We’ve got a dynamite double string serenader here from James Goodall in Rosewood and European Spruce that’s opened up and ready for action. Built in 2007 and played since then, this Goodall RGC 12 plays easily and clearly across the dynamic range. We loved digging in with a thumbpick for bluesy growl, but it also holds up well under a lighter touch where the overtones have more latitude to bloom. An L.R. Baggs iMix pickup system has been installed with volume and blend knobs just under the lip of the soundhole, and the preamp with its multitude of settings is accessible just below that on the back. As we mentioned above, this Goodall RGC 12 hasn’t been sitting idle and collecting dust, and has some first position fret wear and body marks to prove it. We appreciate that this one has been so lovingly played in; the voice is sweet and powerful and clear all at once.

Interested in a livewire OM with crackling trebles and crisp responsiveness? Look no further than this 2004 TMDROM from the father-son duo at Goodall Guitars with Madagascar Rosewood back and sides and Adirondack Spruce for the top. Part of their Traditional line, this OM has tasteful herringbone trim, a partially scalloped bracing system, and open gear Waverly tuners for all those good vintage vibes.
Set up for both fingerstyle and flatpicking, this TMDROM performs beautifully under a medium attack, and offers a well-balanced voice that’s colored by warm midranges and chirpy treble strings. When played with fingers, this Goodall wratchets up the warmth and dynamism to lend extra color to your arrangements. We’d expect no less from the folks at Goodall Guitars–this TMDROM is an excellent choice for Blues, Bluegrass, and even some forays into altered tunings. Don’t forget: there’s a Fishman Matrix Infinity pickup/preamp too for when you plug in at your next gig.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to this lion in a guitar’s clothing. The 2007 Goodall MSC (Maple Standard Cutaway) Dreadnought we’ve got here is a real eye- (and ear-) catcher of a strummer, with tight Curly Maple back and sides and topped with Sitka Spruce–a Dreadnought which is bright and responsive with a bottom-end that is warm and tender. The Curly Maple provides its hallmark crispness and drive, but thanks to the Dreadnought body that brightness is tempered across the registers, such that the tone is even and balanced (two words not often used to describe anything approaching a Dreadnought). A real flatpicker’s delight, this Goodall MSC responds beautifully to aggressive attack for Bluegrass, but is also clean and expressive for a Sunday afternoon waltz. Lastly, the MSC is both a powerhouse unplugged and amplified, thanks to the installation of a L.R. Baggs I-Beam bridge plate pickup. This guitar comes with an Ameritage hardshell case.
