1994 Goodall GCC Brazilian/Sitka
There aren’t many guitars out there with woods like this one. James Goodall made this Grand Concert Cutaway to completely custom specifications in 1994 while he was living in Hawaii. For starters, the neck profile is slimmer than his other guitars, and is completed with a one-off Jazz, low profile heel, the combination of which makes the neck comfortable to navigate. Fretting notes becomes an almost intimate gesture. The back and sides come from a rare stock of tight, straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood, which is dark and somber in its coloring. Those colors are a nice contrast to the bright, lively tone which comes from the “Big Goose” Sitka Spruce top, which was sustainably harvested from naturally fallen lumber and has a saturated, vibrant color from patination. Moreover, Goodall used Fossilized Walrus for the nut and saddle–an uncommon, yet attractive detail with a clean resonance. All of these specialty woods come together in a tight, responsive package which lends itself to recording or vocal accompaniment, and is wonderful just to look at.

James Goodall worked closely with this guitar’s original owner to build the best “perfectly voiced” fingerstyle guitar he possibly could. The attention he gave this instrument is evident in every detail, from the drop dead gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood sides and back, to the beautifully fine-grained Western Red Cedar top, to the contrasting extra-curly maple binding. Although it was built for a fingerstylist, this one also offers strummers and single line players plenty of shimmer and sustain as well.

James Goodall has been building world-class instruments since the seventies, and they just keep getting better. Here’s a Concert Jumbo cutaway in Indian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce that is the very definition of balanced tone. The size of this guitar is a major factor in achieving that balance — the Concert Jumbo was designed for players who want a smaller body dimension than the Goodall Standard, with the result heard in the focused lower-mids and sparkling highs that flow from the instrument. The responsiveness of Adirondack Spruce pairs perfectly with the richness of Indian Rosewood to produce a versatile instrument that’s equally at home in the hands of a fingerstyle player or a coffee shop chord-strummer.
