Greenfield Montreux Quilted Maple/Spruce
One of but a few, this sparkling green Montreux Archtop from Michael Greenfield is the pinnacle of contemporary archtop construction. If Michael’s hands have touched it, you know the guitar is going to be a knock-out–and this one fits the bill nicely. With gorgeous Quilted Maple back and sides and a Spruce top finished to an emerald hue, this guitar exudes an aura of originality and excitement. Unplugged, the voice is silky and expressive, with trebles that are well-balanced. When the custom-wound Armstrong pickup employed, that voice powerful and absorbing with amplification. Now, as you may know, Greenfield’s archtops are hard to come by. They have a notoriety that is due only in part to the fact that Michael doesn’t build them very often, but does so to his exacting standards. As such, the craftsmanship on this instrument is stellar, from the voicing of the top to the adjustable bridge (which works by using different included shims to raise or lower the string height) and the all-Ebony hinged tailpiece. This one has fallen into our lap, but it won’t be there for long. This is Paul Hinton’s personal guitar, and was played by Joe Finn before him, who called it the “Green Iguana.”
Follow the link below to hear Paul’s arrangement of “Georgia On My Mind” and “Misty,” where you can see for yourself how a big-bodied archtop from Michael Greenfield can manage to sound huge and intimate at the same time.

Welcome to Dream Guitars! Home of the loudest, most nuanced, most original guitars! But nothing quite compares to the 2006 Greenfield Changui we have in the store today. When renowned Canadian luthier Michael Greenfield struck up a conversation with one of the best jazz guitar players alive, Charlie Hunter, of course the lovechild of that conversation would be a seven (or eight, in Hunter’s case) string nylon guitar with highly flamed Koa back and sides and Spruce top. Enter: The Changui! As strange as its name may be, this is a guitar which loudly bucks all the trends and unquestionably changes your style the second you start to play it. Tuned from a high C to the ultra low F string, this guitar uses specialty nylon strings from the German string company Hannabach to achieve tones that range from warbling and loose lows to sharp, biting highs. The Changui is also a great showcase for Greenfield’s great attention to detail: observe that there are not one, but two bevels, one on the front lower bout and the other on the back upper bout (commonly known as a Laskin Relief) to handle this creature comfortably. Greenfield’s Spalted Beech and Paua rosette shines below those custom strings, and the Florentine cutaway has a graceful arc. The multiscale proportions are copyrighted by Novax (a detail requested in the original for Hunter), so that the monster low F string has the proper tension and intonation. When you do the math, you’ll see this is a rather dramatic multiscale: from 25” on the trebles to 29” on the low F. This guitar comes with a K&K pickup and Calton flight case.

Greenfield’s necks are superbly shaped, importing a warmth and confidence to the left hand that feels natural and graceful. All of this is to say, simply: this G1 is a masterpiece capable of anything. This guitar creates an enveloping blanket of sweet, warm music as easily as you breathe.

***Moonspruce is fine European Spruce that is harvested in a very old tradition used by violin makers such as Stradivarius for more than a Century. The wood is harvested when the sap flow is at it’s lowest and it is left to start drying in the forrest. It is denser and more moisture resistant that modern harvested spruce. This may well be the very last G-4 Michael Greenfield ever makes in Brazilian Rosewood. He’s having great difficulty finding high grade Brazilian wide enough for the 17″ bout of his G-4 design. So besides being an amazing Greenfield guitar this may also be a very rare one. The Brazilian here is outstanding, very even grain and color. The Lutz top is amazing, with abundant medullary silking that we’re sure is a big part of the sultry tone of this one. We added DUAL BEVELS, a ribrest bevel to match the armrest bevel, and fit it with a cutaway and a Calton Flight case. This is a guitar you’ll want to protect.

While playing music professionally in the 1970s, I began setting up and repairing electric guitars. By the 1990s, this evolved into a career repairing and restoring vintage and antique guitars. Having had the opportunity to examine so many of those iconic pre-war and early 20th century instruments was an invaluable education. I was able to examine, measure, play and HEAR those wonderful guitars!! It also pointed out the issues that typically need service down the road, which I attempt to engineer out of my own instruments. Maintaining the guitars of so many musicians nurtured my understanding of how to address the needs of players with varied repertoire, styles and musical needs. I bring all of this to my craft and my current work. My goal is that you are not just satisfied but THRILLED with your new guitar.
