A rare treat for us today: a gorgeous 2016 000-42 from Asheville’s own EJ Henderson. Coming from the lineage of her father, Wayne Henderson, Jayne’s been building under her own name for a number of years, honing her craft and building up an impressive body of work–and wait list. Highly figured Black Walnut back and sides with dramatic rippling figure, Red Spruce top (plus dark sunburst), and extensive sparkling Abalone 42-style appointments along the body and position markers. Then we come to the bespoke catfish inlaid in great detail between the G and D tuners at the back of the headstock. Jayne’s inlay skill renders crisp lines and fluid curves, leaning on her eye to match the wavy pattern of each piece of pearl to mirror the scales of the fish. The voice on this 000 is quick and crisp, with a lively string energy that makes for a particularly exciting and enjoyable playing experience. Interested in learning more? Give us a shout!

Jayne Henderson is a good friend of the shop, we love her work. The apple didn’t fall too far from the tree. Speaking of trees, this guitar used to be a White Oak, or well at least the back and sides of the instrument were. This is an uncommon tonewood, but in the right hands it is every bit as incredible as any of your standard “dry” tonewoods. This OM-18 is dressed in Carpathian Spruce on top– Donning the name “DOC” on the heel cap is an homage to the late great Doc Watson. Need we say more? If you’re looking to get into an incredible and unique OM that can do practically everything? Look no further.

We hear this one loud and clear. E.J. Henderson’s building powerhouse traditional guitars in the spirit of her father, Wayne, but with her particular style and approach to alternative tonewoods. This 2015 Slope D features Oak back and sides and a Carpathian Spruce top, 12 fret neck, and a 1 25/32” nut for a touch roomier lefthand experience. The voice is crisp and quick! Notes fire right out of the soundhole with an even decay that keeps the voice clear rather than lush. The fretboard is decked out with southwest-style inlays, and elsewhere the guitar is trimmed out with Abalone.

A lovely (and lively) little gem from E.J. Henderson! This 2016 0-42K is a firecracker of an O guitar, decked out with highly flamed Koa for the back, sides, top, and headstock veneer. 42-style Abalone trim rings in the top and soundhole, and Jayne added an arcing MOP inlay too the headstock as a minimalist vine. 12 frets to the body, short scale, with a 1 25/32” nut for a smidge extra finger room. Weighing in at a scant 3lbs 7oz, it’s a miracle this E.J. Henderson doesn’t float away at the first pluck of the strings.

Lots of volume for a little package—our 2015 E.J. Henderson Nick Lucas. Across the neck and body, a lovely dark sunburst. Celtic inlays sprawling along the fretboard. Waverly tuners, bone nut and saddle, 24 3/4” scale on 14-fret neck. Maple + Adirondack Spruce = crisp and loud.
This is the sort of guitar that really sings if you dig in a bit, but the crunchy bass response can be just as easily accessed with a lighter touch. The V neck has vintage written all over it. If you’re looking for an extra dose of warmth in the mids, this guitar fits the bill, and adds focused, bright trebles to the mix for an excellent balance.
The waiting list for these guitars is already pretty steep; this is a great opportunity to snag one ahead of the curve!

“I began making acoustic guitars with my dad, the very talented musician and luthier Wayne Henderson, as a means to pay off my law school loans and ended up loving the work so much that I decided to put a pin in my endeavors to pursue a career in environmental law. For the past few years, I have set out to learn all I can from my dad in order to preserve and carry on his incredible trade while putting my own spin on his traditional aesthetics and methods. I am hoping to chisel a space for myself within the luthier community by working to meld tradition with environmentally friendly practices. Most of my instruments are made from local wood that I find within a small radius from my home in the Appalachian mountains or from materials located farther away but that are thoughtfully and sustainably harvested. Using these methods and my dad’s building techniques I am hoping to change the idea that only exotic endangered wood can make a beautiful, great sounding instrument.I currently split my time working in my dad’s shop in Rugby, VA and at my home in Asheville, NC.”
Jayne’s already well on her way, learning from her father and finding her own individual voice.
