Now here’s something you don’t see every day—a one-off, truly special open-back banjo from the legendary Wayne Henderson. We’re already very familiar with Wayne Henderson’s flattops—and we love them dearly. We’ve been fortunate enough to have seen a great number pass through our hands, but until today we’ve never seen what Wayne can do with a Bluegrass Banjo. This Mastertone-inspired wonder was built all the way back in 1975 with gold etched hardware, Maple resonator, and tight flamed Maple neck. This is #5 of only 19 banjos that Wayne has built to date, each unique, and this is one of only two with “Henderson” inlaid at the headstock. Long scale setup at 27” and 1 3/16” nut; a hefty 10lbs 13oz; broken in and opened up tone.

This is why we are called Dream Guitars, because of instruments like this. Here we have a Henderson D-45 in Premium quality Adirondack (Red) Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood, that has been revoiced by the godfather of modern fingerstyle guitar himself Ervin Somogyi. This is an ultimate example of two worlds meeting in the realm of lutherie. This dreadnought maintains its flatpicking, and robust quality all the while preserving that power in the hands of a fingerstyle player. This instrument is truly one of a kind, and an absolute masterpiece at that, for the player and collector alike.

Here’s a Henderson that stands apart. Not only were Wayne’s legendary hands involved—Rudie Blazer (of Blazer & Henkes), John Arnold, and Don Wilson all pitched in for this 2010 000-42. Old-growth Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (plus headstock veneer); Red Spruce top that Arnold harvested after Hurricane Opal; Mahogany neck block from a 150-year-old mantle; hand engraved tuners from Blazer & Henkes’ shop. The list goes on. The neck is carved in an homage to blues guitar necks of old, and is chunky in hand and features a 1 7/8” nut to boot. Don’t be scared, we found this neck to be effortlessly playable, and quite comfortable. There’s a familiarity and confidence that comes from having good contact with the neck along your hand, and this one has that in spades. Dark blue Abalone bedecks the Red Spruce top with black purflings to really set it off, and the Ivoroid bindings bring it all together. This 000-42 is 100% a Henderson, but the top is signed by everyone to further set this one apart. It was even featured in a Fretboard Journal article in 2014 (https://www.fretboardjournal.com/features/four-kind-watching-luthiers-wayne-henderson-don-wilson-rudie-blazer-john-arnold-work/).

The only way to make a Henderson better is to add time to the equation–and this 1984 Dreadnought has that in spades. Accordingly, the voice is wide awake and expressive, thanks in part to age but also of course from the Brazilian Rosewood body with Red Spruce top. 28-style appointments, plus Wayne’s fiddle headstock profile, make for a classic Henderson Dread. Looking for a slimmer neck? This beauty has a 1 5/8″ nut for a tighter, faster string spacing for the left hand.
