2006 Henderson D-28 Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Power and control at once. We love Wayne Henderson’s guitars, especially his Dreads, and D-28 numbers 380 is a doozie. Brazilian Rosewood body with Adirondack Spruce on top, 28-style appointments with herringbone trim and a zigzag backstrip, plus Wayne’s fiddle headstock and Waverly tuners. Grained Ivoroid bindings plus a soft brown tortoise-style pickguard remarkably reminiscent of prewar guards round out the package. This Henderson has been played in and opened up handsomely since 2006 when it rolled off Wayne’s bench and into eager hands. The voice balances some potent drive with a sweetness in the trebles that really fills out the sound. It’s a natural flatpicker, but we’re happy to report it’s sensitive enough for fingerpicking as well.

We’ve seen quite a number of Wayne’s guitars pass through our shop, but he still manages to pull out new stops with his latest builds, which number into the 800s. In fact, this Henderson OM-41 is the only OM Cutaway we’ve ever seen, and it’s basically right off the bench and here in our lap. #803 was finished in 2020 with gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Adirondack Spruce on top—primo tonewoods being Wayne’s bread and butter. The 41-style appointment package features dark Abalone around the top and soundhole, with Grained Ivoroid bindings and a multicolored zipper backstrip. At the headstock, carved in Wayne’s signature fiddle profile, we have gold Waverly tuners and bone saddle, and an Abalone thistle behind Wayne’s inlaid name. The soft Venetian Cutaway sets this one apart, and is such a welcome treat for those uppermost frets to earn their keep. The voice is characterized by even, smooth response across the registers. Wayne’s OMs have a more lush and inviting sound than his Bluegrass Dreadnoughts, so usually better equipped for fingerstyle, but honestly we had a great time digging in a bit with a flatpick on this one; it holds up well under a stronger attack. The neck is comfortable and wide with a 1 13/16” nut and 2 3/8” string spacing at the saddle, and the setup is easy on the hands too. We’ve got this OM-41 wrapped up in a Calton flight case to keep it safe and sound.

Wayne Henderson’s been doing it right for years! And some of his earlier work, like this 1992 Dreadnought (top signed May 7, 1992), are proof guitars only get better with time. We. love. this. guitar. It’s got a quick, lively response, and individual notes are well-defined and meaty; sixteenth note runs come out crisp and clear. Slim neck with a 1 23/32” nut, dramatic sapwood figured Brazilian Rosewood, Appalachian Spruce top, the complete package. Our own repair staff has brought this one back up to snuff with a fresh neck reset and setup, so it plays as easy as brand new butter!

If you’ve ever heard of Wayne Henderson, you already know the pedigree of this D-42. Let’s take at a look at this cadillac of Dreadnoughts, the 2008 Henderson D-42. It might be a few years old, but it looks like we just took it out of its original packaging; we were hard-pressed to find even the slightest scratch. As such, the 42-style appointments shine in pristeen glory: delicately-colored Abalone trim surrounds the body and outlines the fretboard extension, rings the soundhole, is inlaid into the Ebony fretboard itself in snowflakes and diamonds, then culminates in a sparkling display of Wayne’s name and a floral inlay on the Brazilian Rosewood headstock veneer.
If this guitar were any prettier, we’d rent it out for beauty pagents rather than sell it outright–but that would be a dishonor to the voice that lurks beneath the flawless surface. Its previous owner must have impeccable technique: for all that it appears to have been untouched, one strum of the strings reveals that the Appalachian Spruce top and Brazilian Rosewood back and sides have been consistently played and has opened up magnificently. As if that wasn’t enough to get your salivary glands going, Wayne’s D-42 has one more trick up his sleeve (or soundhole): this Dreadnought performs as beautifully for fingerpicking as it does with a flatpick. An anomaly, we know, not really what you expect, but where there’s a will there’s a Wayne. Given that he’s an absurdly talented fingerpicker, in addition to being a luthier, he was probably thinking of how to make this guitar sound the best when it’s down to just your fingers and the strings.
Once plucked, you’d better hold on for the ride: the voice is ferocious, with a well-defined low-end and treble notes to put a songbird to shame. We practically guarantee that whatever tune you decide to play on this Henderson D-42, you’ll never want to hear it from another guitar, again. Period.

If it’s good enough for Tim Stafford, you bet it’s good enough for us. Tim commissioned this Dreadnought from Wayne Henderson with a set of Madagascar Rosewood he acquired from LMI and held onto for 10 years before Wayne was able to craft it into this exquisite piece. Red Spruce on top, rounded V neck, and MOP diamond fretboard inlays complete the image. Stafford used this Henderson for several Blue Highway shows and for at least one record. To further boost the provenance, this is the first Madagascar Rosewood guitar that Wayne ever built! We’ve seen a lot of Hendersons over the years, and this one definitely stands apart.

Well, well, Wayne! We’ve snagged a 2017 Henderson OM that’s like new with gorgeous Honduran Rosewood back and sides and an Adirondack Spruce top. According to our sources, Wayne’s only built a small handful of Hondo guitars, so we’re extra delighted to have found one ourselves. The voice is big and bold, with powerful response and fat trebles. We love the energy, for both fingers and flatpicks. Waverly tuners and 28-style appointments, rounded out with a custom tortoise-style pickguard and a soft V neck.

In like a lion, and right back out like one too. This D-45 is #499 from Wayne Henderson’s shop! Paul had it sold before we could slap new strings on it, but we had enough time to get a quick video and some photos before sending it on to its lucky new owner. Here’s the down and dirty: Brazilian Rosewood, Adirondack Spruce, 45-style appointments, Wayne’s “fiddle” headstock, custom inlays on the back of the headstock, and Wayne’s legendary dreadnought projection and balance. Our latest Wayne Henderson also happens to be one of the first! #35 was built all the way back in 1976, when Wayne was still working out of Rugby, VA. This Dread has been lovingly played for countless hours: run your hand along the neck and feel how the years have smoothed till it shines. The original owner came to Wayne with some Walnut that he wanted to be used for a guitar. Wayne agreed, and put it to use for the back and sides on this dread, as well as the neck, making this Wayne’s first Walnut guitar! Appalachian Spruce on top, herringbone trim, a V neck with rounded tip, and a slim 1.625” nut for deft lefthand work.
A well-played-in dread is worth its weight in gold; even more so with a Henderson. There’s no telling how many hundreds of hours this guitar’s been singing for, but our repair team went over it with a fine-toothed comb to make sure everything was on the up and up. With that clean bill of health in mind, we’re offering this Henderson Dreadnought as an incredible deal. Not only has it already been broken in, the Walnut gives the guitar a crisp, focused projection and midrange punch that sets it apart from other Hendos.

Whip cracking trebles and an extra dollop of woody warmth in the bass characterize the voice of this gorgeous 2013 Dreadnought from Wayne Henderson. Wayne’s tone is legendary and needs no repeating here, but we can say with confidence that this Mahogany Dread stacks up there with the best of them. It’s already opened up handsomely in just a few years, and it’s only going to get better.
