2018 Jang OM, Madagascar Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
The epitome of modern lutherie, this 2018 OM from Isaac Jang, made of Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, being 6 years old at the time of publication, has allowed for some excellent opening up of the Adirondack. Featuring all the qualities we know and love from Isaac’s work, including the Uchida-style bendaway, it offers not only a sleek aesthetic but also easy access to the fingerboard extension. This instrument has been well-played and well-cared-for. This guitar really speaks for itself.

This 2016 Jang OM in Cocobolo and Italian Spruce has everything you need to better explore fingerstyle guitar. With a 25.4″ scale and 1 3/4″ nut over a C profile neck, this OM feels familiar at the first touch; playability isn’t a question of “how good is it,” but rather, “How can it be this good?” The Uchida-style cutaway and bevel make for easy fretting across the upper registers while striking a contemporary chord in the aesthetics department. Isaac must have an impressive stash of wood in his shop: the Cocobolo back and sides are darkly gorgeous, matched neatly by a creamy, tight-grained Italian Spruce top. We enjoyed playing this OM in standard, but boy did this Jang become a beast of another order once we dropped it down into DADGAD! The faint treble overtones swelled, the bass strings crisp but fat, the overall voice velvet-smooth. Response time is almost nil; by the time you put fingertip to string the guitar will already be singing loudly.

Sugar sweet with power to match. Now this is the one for you, if you’re looking for one flattop that’ll handle everything. Our 2017 Jang OM is just that good. Chocolate-dark Cocobolo back and sides paired up with Swiss Spruce on top, a glassy setup that’s effortless under the fingers, and a gorgeous blue purfling package to set off these lovely tonewoods. Moreover, Isaac built on a beveled cutaway, along with his Subtle Manzer Wedge design, for added ergonomic ease. And this guitar does play easily—it’s as easy as breathing. The voice is crisply balanced across the registers, with just enough fire in the bottom end to warm it all up, and articulate trebles for added definition. Grab this one while you can! Los Angeles-based luthier Isaac Jang is one of the up-and-coming builders we’ve been following with keen interest. He has the ability to take choice materials like Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, Ebony, Honduran Mahogany, and weave them together into a harmonious design that strikes the eye and sets the ears ringing. We’ve been fortunate to have commissioned several custom builds from Isaac, and our latest adds his Uchida-style Bendaway to the upper bout with an added bevel for further comfort and a slim Manzer Wedge body for smooth sailing.
Set up with a 16 to 20 inch compound radius fingerboard, this Jang OM feels intimate and cozy. But this beau is brand new! The voice has a lively quality that really plays out in the sonority of the bass and the liquid trebles. Excellent note separation for fingerstyle, dropped tunings most welcome. This is as close as you might get to the perfect guitar without the obligatory crossroads contract for your soul.

Our first Isaac Jang guitar–and it’s already sold! We barely had time to change the strings, snap some photos, and record Al before sending it along to its happy new owner. Exciting times, indeed, to have such a fine instrument of Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce come through our doors, with another one right behind it. This 2016 OM is both novel and traditional in its features: for all that the body is a standard OM shape and Jang employs a dovetail neck joint, this Jang also has a subtle Manzer wedge built into the body curves and a dropped shoulder cutaway with Ebony bevel in a gorgeous display of playability.
The voice is equal parts thunder storm and gentle rain patter on the window, capable of rich and enveloping bass notes and sweet trebles with fearsome sustain. We can’t wait to get another one in!

My name is Isaac Jang. I am a guitar maker. I was born in Busan, S. Korea. I moved to Los Angeles, California in 1999, and it was then that my journey began. I learned to play the guitar when I was 14 years old. After seeing Tommy Emmanuel play “Amazing Grace,” my eyes were opened to the art of fingerstyle music. From that point onward, my fascination and passion for acoustic guitar sound intensified and eventually led me to lutherie. After graduating from Galloup School of Lutherie in 2007, I began my apprenticeship under the wonderful builder, admirable role model, and unmatched mentor, Kathy Wingert. During my apprenticeship, I learned skills ranging from basic construction skills to fine tuning every element of guitars. I not only learned the technical skills of guitars but also experienced Kathy’s unique approach to different aspects of guitar building. Along with my apprenticeship, I worked at Westwood Music under the guidance of my beloved friend and mentor Fred Walecki. During my time there, I performed tasks including but not limited to simple restrings and setups, extensive structural reconstruction, finish repairs, and vintage instrument restorations. The opportunity to work with different players and with a wide range of instruments opened my eyes and ears to the various subtleties in sound and playability. In 2013, I started teaching acoustic guitar making at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. This teaching experience gave me new insight into guitar making, as I had to reason out each step of construction, carefully analyzing why and how guitars worked. I found that teaching students not only increased their skills but also helped me to think and build systematically. I am currently building a very limited number of instruments every year. Every great guitar starts with great wood. I handpick the finest materials, one-by-one, and build with traditional methods of guitar making. My goal is to bring the best of wood to music. Every piece of wood has its own unique characteristics and tonal qualities; therefore, I spend time to analyze and know the wood so as to bring out its fullest musical potential. Because guitars are vitally connected to the player, I will work closely with you to suit your playing style. I aspire to build an instrument that not only works but also inspires you to play. I can assure you that my meticulous construction and passion for guitar making will leave you with an instrument that makes both your voice and your heart sing. Your new go-to guitar will be built with only the best sounding finest woods, elegantly designed with the highest quality of craftsmanship. Now, let’s make some music!
