2018 Matsuda Deconstruction Hybrid, Flame Maple/Sitka Spruce
We’re lucky to be able to follow along with Michi Matsuda during the wild rides that make up his custom guitars. We recently commissioned this hybrid of Michi’s Deconstruction guitars for one of our longtime clients, and it’s been a blast watching this piece of art come together for the past several months on our blog (see here: https://www.dreamguitars.com/michihiro-matsudas-mad-scientist-experiment/). Michi had the reins right from the start, and we’d like to include his artist’s statement here to explain just what’s going on here:
“It is going to be a one-of-a-kind acoustic/electric, something in between my archtop guitar I made in 2017 and my deconstruction guitars. It will also be a sculptural piece of art. The top is hand-carved Sitka Spruce. The body is partial sides, and partial hand-carved back. I will use figured Maple for that. The basic tonal idea is the same as my deconstruction, so there is no sound box. I will use figured, tempered Maple for neck, and Mahogany with some Rosewood for main structure of the body. I will use two humbuckers. Controls will be simple: one volume, one tone, and one pickup switch. I am also going to design a new style of bridge.
It will not be an archtop guitar, not a solid-body, not a hollow-body electric.”
The result is 100% Matsuda. With some components lightly sunburst, others exposed, from Sitka Spruce to Maple and Wenge, and with a tailpiece, bridge, and pickup design that doesn’t dampen the top plate, Michi’s latest project, which we’re calling his Deconstruction Hybrid, is in a category all of its own.

Michi Matsuda—a category all of his own. This man blends the disciplines of sculpture and lutherie with a contemporary artist’s eye for contour and color in ways that the rest of us are only just now catching on to. This M1 was originally built for one of our clients in 2005, and it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to revisit with an old friend. Suspicions have now been confirmed: even 13 years later, Michi’s guitars are gorgeous, timeless, and incredibly resonant.
Rich, red Brazilian Rosewood make up the back and sides, and there’s a tight-grained Italian Spruce on top with a little bit of aged toner in the finish which pairs nicely with the Spalted Maple rosette, waist, and florentine cutaway inlays. Twin koi fish are inlaid in Abalone from frets five to nine, and just after the scalloped nut there’s a final touch of Spalted Maple veneered to the headstock with gold Gotoh 510 tuners and Ebony knobs. The bridge is Rosewood, as are the bindings, and the heelblock features Matsuda’s swoop relief carved into the treble side to coax your left hand a bit closer to the fretboard when playing the uppermost frets.
There’s absolute magic in the naked strings. The treble response is haunting, replete with overtones and palpable sustain. Notes from this M1 hang in the air like a cloud. It’s rare to find a guitar which really feels as comfortable with picks as it does with fingers, but this Matsuda is one such guitar. How Michi manages to coax so much color and dynamism out of his guitars, we’ll probably never know—but we’re glad he does.

A guitar from Michi Matsuda is the best of both worlds: contemporary aesthetics dovetailed with impeccable tone. We’re proud to offer this 2010 M1 with a set of Koa unlike anything we’ve ever quite seen before, and a tight-grained Italian Spruce top with Wenge-and-Abalone rosette. This one is gorgeous, lightweight (4lb 7oz), and the setup is slinky and smooth to boot. Michi’s heel has a thumb slot carved into it that helps the left hand get up and over to those dusty top shelf frets. The voice has a sweet, opened-up tone that’s you only find after a guitar’s had some time to stretch its wings.
This Matsuda M1 has definitely found its voice, and it’s one that’s smooth, easy, and well balanced. The bass and mids have a drier, crisper fundamental than the Brazilian M1s we’ve seen, and we think that’s a pretty exciting way to stand out. It doesn’t take much effort to get a lot of volume and sustain out of this Matsuda. Michi’s works of acoustic art are in a class all their own—and this one’s making straight A’s.

But rarely do we find such consistent harmony between a builder’s visual and auditory aesthetics. But then, Michi Matsuda is that rare luthier. This M1 comes to us from 2007, in Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce, with free arcing purflings and Spalted Maple accents on top. The Brazilian back and sides are rich and dark, with enough wildness to the grain to be eye-catching, but straight enough to be stable and true. Back on top, see how Michi sandwiched Ebony and Rosewood together for a two-layer bridge. We’re not sure of the last time a bridge design struck us as so contemporary, and so approachable at the same time.
Michi carves a swooping thumb rest out of the neck heel to get your left hand a bit closer to the fretboard extension, and the deep florentine cutaway helps even more. Such visual elegance is paired with lush, liquid trebles and surgical clarity in the bass and mids. Even a gentle touch yields up delicious, sweetly sustaining notes, and the setup is butter-smooth and equally tasty.
This Matsuda M1 is simply phenomenal.Other keywords: lutherie, ervin somogyi, somogyi, fingerstyle, flattop, brazilain, gotoh, scalloped nut

It’s because of instruments of this calibre that superlatives were invented in the first place. We just landed this incredible 2011 Matsuda M1 in Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce, and let me tell you—no one builds a guitar like Michi. Not only is every detail executed with immaculate precision for a comprehensive and harmonious visual expression, but the skill with which Michi teases tone out of his tops gives this M1 clean and clear note definition, with just enough color and depth to give individual notes an almost palpable presence in the air. The bass strings, mids, and trebles all play nice with each other; no single register dominates the day. Like so many of Michi’s guitars, this 2011 M1 performs like a well-oiled machine.
Check out the abstract geometric inlays across the headstock, and the arcing purflings inlaid into the top to tie the upper bout together with the rosette. See that suspiciously thumb-shaped indentation on the back of the heel? Gets your left hand that extra bit closer to those uppermost frets. A florentine cutaway seals the deal.
A Matsuda guitar embodies best an expression we find often in our little niche of the instrument world: functional art. Something which stands on its own artistic merits, and does so without compromising an inch for that ultimate ideal: tone.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, ervin somogyi, somogyi, flattop, steel string, brazilain, michihiro matsuda, fingerstyle

Even Michi Matsuda’s prototypes are incredible! We recently stumbled upon just such a gem with this 2008 Nylon String Prototype in Ziricote and Italian Spruce. A flattened Florentine cutaway swoops away from the fretboard, and many of the appointments are Wenge. The neck has a shallow C profile (an excellent play feel for crossover players), and the overall weight is only 4lbs 4oz.
What sets this guitar apart from the crowd (aside from its rich and vigorous tone) is Matsuda’s adjustable neck. Wedged in place with Wenge, the neck angle can be adjusted in both directions simply by driving the wedge further down, or backing it off away from the body. Every detail is executed with typical Matsuda prowess; perfection is never far off where this luthier is concerned.
We’re quite impressed by the tone. Dynamic response and an expansive bass response characterize the voice, and the clarity of each plucked note is something you need to experience firsthand to really grasp. A wealth of overtones flesh out the trebles, and the sustain is prolonged. One of the coolest nylon string guitars we’ve seen in some time, but what else would we expect from Michi Matsuda? It’s a winner in our books.
This Matsuda comes in a lightweight Super Light softshell case, and we have some excellent case upgrades as well; just ask!

In the world of high-end lutherie, Michi Matsuda’s work stands alone. Here in our little corner of paradise, among the Somogyis and Traugotts, Manzers and Monteleones, this Matsuda M1 manages to stand apart from this singular crowd. It’s not just in the curve of the upper bout into the waist from the Florentine cutaway, or the asymmetrically grooved heel carve (the thumb slipping casually into place when fretting along the fingerboard extension). There are other forces at work than the purely visual. As mesmerizing as is Michi’s sense of line and curve manifesting across the segmented top inlays or headstock veneer, or the luster of the Brazilian Rosewood back, this M1 betrays deeper secrets than those found by sight or touch.
When the string are plucked, that’s magic. The voice transitions smoothly between subtle and triumphant, balancing the bell-like trebles with a middle register articulate and precise, and a bass response bearing just a hint of warmth to round out the bottom edge. No matter the tuning, this Matsuda remains clear, nuanced, and invigorating. Michi coaxed the extreme edge of energy out of the Italian Spruce top with his honed voicing techniques. Carving the neck profile into a shape as intimate a lover’s touch, Michi made an instrument which plays as effortlessly as breathing.
It would appear that Matsuda has mastered the ability to reduce Rosewood, Spruce, and Cedar to their natural essences, and to marry them together into a harmony not unlike love. We were transfixed from the first pluck. We still are.

In our experience, Michi Matsuda is one of the finest artists working in lutherie today, and it is always a sincere pleasure to have his instruments in the shop. Today we’ve got one of his M1 models from 2005 decked out in African Blackwood and Adirondack Spruce, and man-oh-man can it sing.
Something about the African Blackwood seems to help open up the middle registers and buff the bass notes until they shine, and with a fabulously tight-grained Adirondack Spruce top, the voice is rich and enveloping, expertly balanced. One of the ultimate fingerstyle guitars, this Matsuda M1 exudes an easy complexity with each note that mirrors the sensation of floating in the ocean, weightless, making it easy to lose track of time and of yourself while playing. The subtly-sunburst Mahogany neck features a wide nut at 1 15/16″ which provides wonderful string spacing for complex chords and allows you to better appreciate the precision with which each string rings.
Are you a fingerstylist? Please: do yourself a favor and take this Matsuda for a spin.

An instrument which surpasses the definitions of both an electric or acoustic guitar, this 2016 Matsuda Hybrid has been years in the making, and arrived in its custom flight case in March. Custom built for one of our clients, this guitar combines the acoustic depth and timbre of a flattop with the low action, smooth setup, and ferocious sustain (not to mention overdriven power) of an electric. There’s only one output jack, but it is wired in stereo, which means (like many contemporary fingerstyle players prefer) that you can run this Matsuda through two amps simultaneously, and therefore establish an extremely dynamic amplified sound. With the floating rib rest on the back of the Brazilian Rosewood body, this instrument is very comfortable to hold and to play, and the Italian Spruce top lends its creamy voice to the overall mix. Interesting in tweaking the setup? Simply open the side access port and the onboard preamp is waiting for you (and you can take a moment to bask in the meticulous, ordered glory of Michi’s wiring job and internal bracing patterns). Here we have a magnetic electric pickup paired with a piezo contact pickup, and this instrument can handle either acoustic or electric strings with ease–all you need to is shift the poles of the magnetic pickup and adjust the string height!
Sadly, we only had this Hybrid in the shop for a few days to record it with Al before sending it on its way to its expectant owner. We can’t wait to see the next one!

Michihiro Matsuda: a sculpter among luthiers. Wrought as though by magic, this 2015 Matsuda Deconstruction electric guitar contains a piece of most of the major tonewoods used today, from the Spruce soundboard and back plate, the Figured Maple side rests, Ebony pickguard, Rosewood head and backplate, Wenge tuner knobs, adjustable bridge, and fretboard, to Mahogany for a lower bout lap rest and neck. Add to that the complex maze that is the body’s insides–the collection of puzzle-piece guts of Mahogany, Wenge, and Ebony–and a suspended shoulder strap pin, and you’ve got an instrument which is completely unmistakable. Outfitted with powerhouse electronics, this guitar plays clean, smooth, and responsive. Housed in a custom flight case made by the folks at A&S, you can rest assured that you will never misplace it, nor that the Deconstruction will ever come to harm.

As always, Michi Matsuda’s guitars are astounding. The “Drop D” featured here was only in our store for a matter of minutes before it was purchased, but we were able to at least photograph Michi’s artistry before it went right back out the door. Upon observing the guitar, the first thing you notice the forked Brazilian Rosewood headstock, extended Ebony fretboard for the low E, and the built-in Wenge capo. And if that wasn’t enough to take your breath away, there’s the intricate, elegant heel of Mahogany and Wenge. After features such as these, the fact that the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are sumptuously figured is almost (almost) mundane–but that crisp sunburst Spruce top is definitely unforgettable. Combined, they lend the guitar a sublime, full tone with rich bass and musical treble that are clear and present. Thanks to Michi’s “Drop D” innovation, this guitar can be played in a variety of tunings with minimal effort. Here, Michi’s outdone himself, building an incredible guitar that can change tunings with the flick of a wrist.

Rather than attempt to praise Michihiro Matsuda ourselves, we’d like to let his teacher and master luthier Ervin Somogyi speak for his work: “Michi is really a phenomenon. There will never be anyone like him. He has a beautiful sense of the line in his designs, and his work is remarkably original.” In our eyes, Matsuda is doing more to evolve the marriage of sonic precision and visual elegance in guitar building than many, if not all, of his peers. His dedication to graceful figures and sculpted tonality is unparalleled, yielding instruments which exist simultaneously as both works of art and tools for creating art. The 2011 M1 before you is just one example of this man’s genius problem-solving skills at work: rather than succumb to the flaw of the Manzer Wedge–which is that the fretboard is traditionally rotated towards the player’s face and forced the left hand to cant at an unnatural angle–Michi introduced a subtle twist to the Mahogany, cantilevering it over the top so it floats like an Archtop guitar. In so doing, Michi created a guitar which was as comfortable and responsive as a traditional Manzer Wedge and as easy to fret as a standard body, thereby enhancing the advantages of both systems with the drawbacks of neither. In addition, the M1 has a subtle multiscale system and his iconic swooped Florentine Cutaway. The detailed segmented rosette of Wenge and Spalted Wood and Matsuda’s carved two-piece Rosewood-and-Wenge bridge stand out as examples of woodworking at its finest, most precise execution. Sonically, the M1 has crystalline balance. Each string rings perfectly clear in respect to its brothers, and the Manzer Wedge helps create a voice with a tight, controlled sound. This guitar is amazingly responsive, but has a thoughtful sonority that makes it the perfect instrument for fingerstylists of every walk. The Madagascar Rosewood (whose provenance Michi has documented) and German Spruce (which was cut in the 1930’s and air dried in the care of a German luthier since then) are paired and tuned to create an instrument with shocking balance and alluring grain patterns across the back and sides. Finally, this guitar comes well-protected with its original Karura hardshell flightcase, so the M1 is practically immune to harm. But all of this pales in comparison to experiencing this guitar firsthand. In fact, we feel that there’s no way to truly grasp how moving this instrument is to the soul, which is why we strongly recommend coming to see us to play this one-of-a-kind work of art.

I was born and raised in Japan. I have liked music, guitars, and making something by hand, since a young age. It seems that it was natural for me to get in guitar making, though I didn’t know about fine woodworking.
After finishing an apprenticeship with master luthier Ervin Somogyi. I started my luthier studio here in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Following my apprenticeship, I studied guitar repair with renowned instrument repairman Frank Ford of Gryphon Stringed Instruments, where I am currently a member of the repair staff.
Tradition, Creativity, Identity.
They are always my focus in my guitar making. It is my challenge to find something new among them in the form of guitars.
Sound is important, but it is only a part of the entire relationship with you and guitars, also me and guitars. It can be mental, it can be physical, it can be intellectual. it is fluid, yet simple.
Therefore, each of guitars I make is unique, personal, and individual.
I want Matsuda guitars to be more than just tools for music. I would be happy if you find a meaningful experience with the guitars I make.
