2013 McConnell 15 Inch, Brazilian/Swiss Moonspruce
A guitar that looks and plays this good ought to be made illegal. It’s seriously distracting for our staff—how can you walk by this wonderful 12-fret from Jordan McConnell without stopping to stare (if you’re lucky), or sitting down to play a tune (if you’re even luckier). Work flow has come to a shuddering stop. So please! Help us out, take this prize fighter home with you!
This is the first 12-fret slot head McConnell we’ve seen (aside from Jordan’s Hauser model), and we’re impressed. Brazilian Rosewood and Swiss Moonspruce in his 15 Inch body, with a 12-fret neck for extra warm trebles? At the first glance, this femme fatale takes control. Jordan’s geometric inlay machinations sprawl across the top at the upper and lower bouts, and ring in the soundhole. Flip it over, and you’ll find the same motif at the heelcap and two rays on the bass side of the lower bout. Alessi tuners and Fossilized Walrus Ivory nut & saddle complete the picture.
Do yourself a favor, don’t let this one slip away.

This custom McConnell 16 Inch has more headroom than an open-air coliseum. We tried to overdrive it, really we did, but the more we dug in the louder it got! Jordan voiced the Moonspruce top with a more aggressive attack in mind, and that, coupled with a solid Brazilian Rosewood neck and multiscale frets (26.25” at the bass, 25.5” at the treble), means that this guitar has huge reserves of energy just waiting beneath the surface. Jordan describes the Brazilian back and sides as “hyper premium.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. The bass response is hefty but well-defined, and the vigorous treble strings cut well in the mix without sounding shrill. Consistent across the fretboard, the voice has a room-filling quality that doesn’t break up when played aggressively. You might want earplugs.

This beauty is a custom build for one of our clients. As such it is not available for purchase, but let us know if you’d like to get a McConnell for yourself!
Really, we want to know: just how does Jordan McConnell manage to pack an entire choir of guitars into one body? This 16 Inch is so hot off the bench it’d scorch your hands to play it, except that the voice is such a smooth operator it’s cool to the touch and a balm to your ears. Designed with one of our fingerstyle clients in mind, Jordan paired another of his gorgeous sets of Brazilian Rosewood with Moonspruce (like Paul’s own McConnell) and a multiscale fretboard from 26” at the bass to 25” at the treble. The frets are so slanted as to maximize intonation and string tension in lowered tunings, and while some multiscale arrangements are dramatically sprawling, Jordan opted for a gentler spread here that still feels perfectly normal for the left hand but keeps the intonation spot on all the way into C tuning territory. There’s a danger in going so low, though: this McConnell performs so beautifully in that sonorous mode that you’ll be hard-pressed to ever go back to standard tuning.
The Moonspruce top is French Polished (Jordan’s FP technique yields a crystal clear and resonant finish) for maximum resonance; the rest of the instrument is finished in Nitrocellulose Lacquer for protection. The result is a surgical clarity to each and every note plucked across the fretboard. The voice has some serious heft, but avoids muddiness altogether. In short, it sounds like it’s been opening up for a few decades already. Remember, it’s only a few months old by the time of this writing! In spite of having achieved such an impressive tone, Jordan wasn’t yet satisfied: he lent his prodigious marquetry skills to crafting a striking mosaic of Brazilian Rosewood, Ebony, Spalted Maple, Satinwood, Gold MOP, and Abalone that adorns the headstock veneers and soundhole. Jordan manages to blend a contemporary aesthetic with an organic palette of colors. Naturally, Alessi tuners complete the package.
If we could only play one guitar for the rest of our lives, this McConnell would more than fit the bill.

We’ve happily bought and sold many of Jordan McConnell’s guitars over the years in addition to being his exclusive dealer, but this is the first time we’ve laid hands on a nylon string guitar from his shop. Naturally, Jordan didn’t disappoint. This is his 2001 interpretation of the Segovia Hauser guitar, and is his first Classical build. Jordan employed a set of extra light-grained Indian Rosewood for the back and sides and topped the body with Engelmann Spruce (note the Cocobolo headstock veneer, rosette, and bridge), then added gold Schaller tuners and a bone nut and saddle to complete the package.
The sensitivity to voicing and tone that has made McConnell’s steel strings so resonant and desirable translates faithfully to nylon strings as well: the voice is equal parts breathiness, smoothness, and balance. With just under two decades under its belt, this McConnell Classical has opened up sweetly, especially in the bass register where the notes are well-defined and quick. Playability, this guitar has in spades with a 650mm scale and 53mm nut. For a fresh take on one of the Classical guitar world’s most iconic models from one of Canada’s finest luthiers, look no further: the McConnell Hauser Segovia.

2016 has been an excellent year for Dream Guitars and Jordan McConnell: we’ve just received his latest and greatest SJ with Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce. The voice is cool, calm, and collected, with inky black depths to the bass and shimmering trebles with a well-defined edge. Every surface is french polished for maximum resonance, except for the oil-finished neck which feels instantly familiar like a smoothly-worn neck from your favorite vintage guitar. The tone lends emotional weight to your compositions, providing extra color and lushness to all arrangements.
Everything is appointed in Snakewood, down to the fretboard and bridge themselves, and the knobs of the Alessi tuners, and the nut, saddle, and bridge pins are made from Fossilized Walrus Ivory. Handling all tunings like the maestro it is, this McConnell is the ultimate instrument for fingerstyle expression, with string to string balance that chimes like a chorus of church bells. Custom-built for one of our clients, this McConnell is already sold, but let us know if you’re interested in commissioning one for yourself.

At a touch, this 2014 McConnell bursts into life. We’ve come to expect Jordan’s guitars to have such rich tonality, but every time another one comes our way it’s like hearing music for the first time. With an understated elegance of style, this SJ marries Brazilian Rosewood, Moonspruce, Ebony, Mahogany, and Stainless Steel frets into an instrument which can rumble and roll, whisper and shout, with equal ease. Everyone wants a guitar which works well for flatpicking and fingerstyle, but such a guitar is rather hard to come by in our experience. This McConnell, however, might have won the lottery for a balanced, dynamic voice which does just that, performing flawlessly for both approaches. Fingerstyle arrangements in altered tunings are rich and articulate, and the same tune will remain articulate and balanced under a flatpick! The basses are particularly clear and present, and blend beautifully with the other registers to form a voice with pianistic separation of notes, no matter where on the fretboard you happen to be playing.

Here we have a Custom-ordered McConnell 16″ model built for a client of ours. This guitar was in part inspired by Paul Heumiller‘s personal McConnell, with its primo Brazilian Rosewood back and sides perfect German Spruce top, a truly incredible Brazilian Rosewood neck, and multiscale layout with a 26″ scale length on the low E and a 25″ on the high. If you frequent our website often you know we are big Fans of Jordan’s work: he has one of the most unique aesthetics and voices out there, and we just love it. This is one of Jordan’s latest guitars and represents everything that makes a guitar great, from the beautiful lines and perfect craftsmanship to that modern tone and feel. This, in our minds, is about as perfect as a guitar can get. The incredibly lightweight build allows for a gargantuan voice with buckets of sustain and strong, dynamic tonality. Lowered tunings sound fabulous, thanks to the multiscale, and the tastefully sloped Florentine cutaway is both gorgeous to look at and delightfully convenient for playing the upper registers, and the rib rest and arm rest bevels make playing as comfortable as breathing This guitar comes with a Karura hardshell case.

Here is a very rare preowned guitar from Jordan McConnell. Jordan is one of the hottest builders on the scene today, having quietly built dozens of guitars for his fellow touring musicians such as Seth Avett and John Doyle. Jordan also plays in the group the Duhks. As a touring pro he knows what musicians need from an instrument and boy does he delivery. Dream Guitars owner Paul Heumiller himself owns a McConnell SJ, “the best fingerstyle guitar [he’s] ever played.” This one is a custom Brazilian Rosewood SJ multiscale with a German Spruce top, cutaway, Graf tuners and a custom Hoffee Carbon Flight Case. The combination of the 26″ scale on the bass and the 25″ scale on the treble is perfect for moving between alternate tunings like DADGAD and Standard. This one does it all!

My building is informed by 30 years as a guitar player, nearly half of that as a professional with the Grammy and Juno Award winning band The Duhks. My years of touring and constant playing have resulted in a broad experience as a musician and have also led me to an intimate understanding of the various aspects of a guitar’s function and playability. From sound production to set up, I have been involved in a love affair with the guitar for most of my life.
I built my first guitar in September of 1999 with David Freeman in Saskatchewan, Canada. It was really just an interesting way to get a (hopefully) better acoustic guitar than I could afford at the time, but I was consumed and I never looked back. I returned to Winnipeg, quit my job, took over my father’s small workshop and began building guitars full time. In 2001 I traveled to Spain for a masterclass with Spanish Luthier José Luis Romanillos. This marked a significant turning point in my building and ignited a deep passion and respect for the craft and for those who came before.
I build mostly by hand, and use a minimum of jigs and fixtures. While this results in a limited number of instruments each year, it gives me the freedom to meet specific requests for customizing, and also allows me to work each piece of timber to bring out the best it has to offer, both sonically and aesthetically.
Jordan has been a friend of the shop for a while now. He's an amazing guitarist and tours with The Duhks, an incredible band that plays traditional roots music with a twist. Every time Jordan's in town he comes by and we peek inside the best guitars in the shop. He's truly in love with his craft and has already made guitars for big names like John Doyle and Tim Sparks. In my opinion Jordan has a true gift for both music and guitar that makes him a special builder with true insight into what a player needs and wants. I'm sure I'll have a McConnell guitar one day soon!
