Paul McGill is a household name in Nashville’s session scene, and the reason is crossover masterpieces like this Super Ace from 2014. Figured Maple back and sides with Lutz Spruce on top, radiused fretboard and cutaway, plus Paul’s custom onboard preamp and Graphtech saddle pickup system—and that’s just the start. The setup is effortless on this beauty, and with a longer, 25 3/4” scale, the voice is crisp, expressive, and very energetic. Equally at home with a Classical repertoire, Jazz, Blues, or any other genre you want to throw it into. Additionally, there’s a soundport in the upper bout to give the player a little more “me in the monitor,” and a sloping venetian cutaway for unencumbered access to those uppermost frets. Cocobolo bindings throughout (as well as the bridge and headstock veneer) really set of the amber palette of the Maple and Lutz.

A Classical guitar with modern sensibilities: our 2005 McGill Picasso turns heads and tunes ears right out of the case. Gorgeous Cocobolo back and sides are here paired with a European Spruce top and Koa bindings and Paul’s dropped shoulder cutaway. The effect, when combined with the offset position markers, elliptical rosette, and open headstock, is to stand out from the nylon string crowd with an exciting flair. Elsewhere, McGill’s Picasso model offers some of the creature comforts of more progressively set up crossover guitars, like a slim 1.95” nut and cutaway, while maintaining the depth of response and color of a traditional classical guitar. The figured Cedar neck has a U-shaped profile that will feel instantly familiar, and Paul’s coaxed the setup into slinky territory for effortless playability.

Paul McGill’s nylon string guitars are something to behold: where stylish contemporary aesthetic meets excellent craftsmanship and a dedication to powerhouse tone, both acoustic and amplified. The 2013 Super Ace we have here today is practically mint, and is as loud and expressive as a fresh pot of coffee in the morning. Paul gives us the perfect guitar for gigging in the form of his Super Ace, with it’s aggressive cutaway for two octaves’ access, and this is one of the first guitars to feature McGill’s new amplification system which combines Graph Tech individual saddle pickups with Paul’s custom preamp that he’s been designing for the past several years! By offering phase inversion for each string, Paul’s system helps minimize feedback and maximize a balanced, organic amplified voice. That means that all the rich, focused tonality of the Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top, and the well-defined low-end from Bubinga back and sides, translate faithfully into the Super Ace’s stage presence when amplified. Add to all of these acoustic advantages McGill’s sense of style with Snakewood bindings, fretboard, and bridge, and the smooth operation of the Baljak tuners in gold and Snakewood, and you’ve got a instrument which looks as good as it sounds. See below for a link to McGill’s website, where he explains his preamp in greater detail.

Paul McGill has earned his reputation as a modern legend with his years of dedication, his exacting perfection, and his incredibly fine-tuned skills and ear. If ever you’ve played a McGill, you know how heartbreaking the moment was when you had to return it to its owner, himself overeager to get the guitar back into his own hands. The Picasso we have here today is, in particular, special: this guitar is #4 in the Collector’s Series. Add to Compare2007 McGill Turbo Cocobolo/Cedar
If Paul McGill ever builds a less-than-stellar guitar, the end times are upon us. The man’s got serious skills, and a reputation to match–and his Turbo model is one of the best calling cards in the business. What makes the Turbo so hot to trot? McGill employs a unique five-fan brace pattern, along with long struts that span the entire length of the body, to create a vigorous tone which fuses traditional Spanish warmth with the clarity of modern lattice braces. Certainly, a Cedar top and Cocobolo Rosewood back and sides help take that warm precision and crank up the projection and richness factors, until this 2007 Turbo becomes a vehicle for both vibrant crescendos and a subtle adagio.
Paul’s craftsmanship is top-notch, so you can rest assured that every other aspect of this guitar is in tip-top shape, including the new jumbo frets with which Paul refretted this powerhouse in 2009, and his tasteful aesthetic (the fuchsia rosette and purflings are here pulled off in handsome style). As if all of that weren’t enough, this Turbo also has a glass-smooth neck profile, with a slinky setup and low action for articulate, expressive playing.

My guitar making history began at age 17 on a bed frame where I attempted to make a guitar.
Later that year I attended the Earthworks School of Guitar Making in Vermont, run by Charles Fox, for six weeks in 1976.
After a short time in Athens, Georgia, I found my way to Wisconsin in June of 1978. I set up a shop in the basement of a duplex I rented and started serving the local guitar players. A year later I moved into a violin shop and started doing violin repairs as well as making guitars. In 1985 I moved to Nashville to work in the restoration shop at Gruhn Guitars where I worked from late 1985 through April, 1987. I returned there in early 1988 for a short time but was finished by the spring.
In my early years I made many steel string guitars, but I always wanted to build fine classical guitars, and in 1984 I went fully into nylon string guitars. In 1989 I had my shop in a house I owned, and there was a fire. It was at that time I learned Earl Klugh had recorded “Solo Guitar” on my classical guitars which he had acquired elsewhere.
Guitar making has been my lifelong pursuit. It has been an amazing journey.
