2012 National Reso-Phonic Cutaway T1, Brass Body
Sweet, complex tricone reso tone aaallll the way up the neck, thanks to a cutaway. That’s what this 2012 National Reso-Phonic T1 has going for it! It’s wonderful to have access to all those upper fret for those of us who don’t have gorilla hands. All brass construction with a tricone resonator for more overtones and nuance, chunky V neck with 1 25/32” nut, and a setup for both bottleneck and fingerstyle playing. This National has been well-cared for, and the metal body retains its mirror luster after eight years.
Modern Nationals lead the resonator pack with their build quality and tone, and this Cutaway T1 proves it yet again.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, slide guitar, blues, resophonic, reso guitar, tri-cone, fingerpicking
Add to Compare2003 National Reso-Phonic Style 3
The original household name when it comes to resonator guitars—National Reso-Phonic is our hands down favorite. We just landed a fantastic example of a 2003 Style 3 tricone in Polished Brass with gorgeous lily-of-the-valley engraving along the top, sides, back, and resonator plate. Basically every metal surface except the frets! The setup is slick and easy and currently dialed in for fingerstyle play rather than as a dedicated slide guitar. At about nine and a half pounds, this National is no featherweight, but we feel that girth translates into sweet, fat, juicy tone that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Shining like a silver dollar, this 2003 National Resophonic Style III in Nickel-plated Brass is worth every penny. Bedecked with “Lilly of the Valley” engraving of vines and flowers twining around the soundholes, bridge, and back and set up with a tricone resonator, this Style III is the cat’s meow of resophonic guitars. Practically immaculate, this National Resophonic has a mirror reflective surface polished to a floss-your-teeth-in-it sheen, so be prepared to dazzle your audiences with both the brilliance of both your playing and your resonator.
The setup is perfect for the Blues player who wants to do both fingerpicking and slide–be it standard tuning, DADF#AD, or beyond, this National Resophonic has a rich and dynamic voice that’s equally at home for quiet tunes or rousing rags. Here, the tricone resonator is the magic bullet, offering a more complex and nuanced tone by distributing the strings’ vibrations to its three resonators before entering the body’s sound chamber. Interested? There aren’t many used National Resophonics on the market these days, let alone resos in such pristine condition and gorgeous engraving.
Add to CompareNew M1 Mahogany/Mahogany
Dressed up in a black suit for the Blues, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill National Reso-Phonic guitar. Custom built to our own Paul Heumiller’s requirements, this M1 combines the earthy richness of an all-Mahogany body with the complex tonality of a tricone resonator (here housed in an antiqued brass shield)–giving this M1 a dynamic voice to bring extra color to your Blues or American Traditional arrangements. The neck features a smooth, round profile and has been tung oiled to be lightweight. Overall, the instrument is surprisingly light for a resonator, but still manages to crank out some seriously fat tone with great projection. Played in standard or DADF#AD with a slide, you’ll notice the presence of the middle registers, especially the A string, and the bright pop of the trebles. This M1 has an impressive attack, managing to be both focused and have a round edge, and will be hard (if not impossible) to put down.

Add to CompareNew National Resophonic ResoRocket N Nickel Plated Brass
Some of the finest old resonator guitars back in the first half of the 20th Century were Brass bodies that they coated in Nickel. The Brass gave the guitars significant heft, but that weight provided unparalleled sustain and tone. Then nickel provided the looks.
When the good people at National Resophonic began remaking these legends of old, they made it their goal to live up to and even surpass the heritage of their National name. And boy do these guitars do just that! They are doing such a good job that these days it’s nearly impossible to get your hands on one. This ResoRocket N is a mirror-surfaced cannon, a slightly more modern design that’s just begging to be let loose on an old Ragtime piece or some soulful Delta Blues. With a cutaway for improved access to the upper register, this guitar is ready for anything you throw it’s way. Try it for Fingerstyle, Slide, or anything else you feel – it never disappoints.
