During a visit to the PRS factory, Paul Smith laid a handful of great guitars on a table, a vintage Tele, vintage Les Paul and one of these Private Stock ‘Violin Guitars’ of his. He struck the strings of the Tele and LP and then he grinned widely and plucked his Violin Guitar. It rang out twice as loud and sustained forever. The difference he explained is in the woods. First there is a Private Stock Maple top, harvested from where Stradivarius acquired his wood for his famous violins. Then comes a Pernambuco neck which is a very dense wood usually reserved for violin bows. On top of this they added the incredible 59/09 humbuckers and adorned it with Abalone Celtic Knot inlays and a rich violin inspired 28 Black Gold finish. This is the last one we know of available anywhere. It is brand new with full warranty. This is sure to be a classic and collectible PRS guitar.

We’ve been watching the evolution of Paul Reed Smith’s new acoustic guitars very closely. First we used one on the Tony McManus’ Maker’s Mark, The Dream Guitars Sessions, CD. Then Paul was kind enough to send us a demo guitar to critique. We put these guitars through the paces and have found them to be inspiring. Luthier Steve Fischer, formerly of McPherson Guitars, joined Paul to design the Tonare Grand and Angelus models. They employ a hybrid X and Fan Bracing pattern that really works to energize the top. We hand selected this Angelus during a visit to the PRS Factory (see video below) and it’s one of the very first Private Stock acoustics from PRS. Premium Cocobolo Rosewood body, fingerboard, bridge and headplate, Bearclaw European Spruce, Select Green Abalone trim, including the new open PRS birds, this one has the best of everything. The Angelus is 000/OM size guitar that morphs from a sweet, gentle voice to boisterous punch when driven hard. This Angelus comes complete with a PRS active pickup system based on the McIntyre Feather, which we love, and an Ameritage case. We are proud to be offering Private Stock PRS acoustic guitars.

PRS really knows how to make a hollow body guitar. This one has all the magical tone of a 335 but it’s even more full sounding. The pickups are superb and easily go from crystal clear, to fat and jazzy to screamin’ blues. This 10 Top is stunning and we love the deep Whale Blue finish. Condition is excellent, just light play wear.
A PRS was the first truly great electric guitar I ever laid hands on. I still remember the feeling and the realization there are great guitars that are super easy to play. I own one myself and always will. We are delighted to now offer Private Stock acoustics from PRS, they are crafted to the highest standards and offer a fresh approach and design. Here’s more from Steve Fischer head luthier at PRS:I started my guitar making career at Bryan Galloup’s school of lutherie and from there went to work at McPherson Guitars. I met Paul Smith at a clinic he did at Elderly instruments in Lansing Michigan. I showed him a guitar I had made and he called me the next morning to ask me to build an acoustic guitar for him. When his guitar was done we decided that we should make some prototype guitars to see if there was a possibility of PRS entering the acoustic market. After a little more than three years, several prototypes, and backing from several very gifted musicians we decided the time was right to introduce the first line of PRS acoustics. The Idea for these guitars came from a Torres guitar that is owned by a friend of Paul. The guitar is a tiny little maple guitar that has a huge sound. Rich, loud bass, bright clear treble, and the overall volume of the guitar was astounding. Both Paul and I felt like this guitar had much to teach us. The guitar’s owner was gracious enough to let me take the guitar back to my shop in Utah where I had it X-rayed and measured everything I could think to measure, all with the idea to try and figure out, not what Torres did, but why he did it. The problem I faced then was how to take what I had learned and apply it to the steel string guitar. That is where the idea for the hybrid X/fan brace design came from, with the idea that I could get the big round musical bass, clear bell-like treble, note separation, and articulation that I loved about classical guitars out of a steel string. I think it worked. I am very pleased with the way these guitars are coming out. The guys on the acoustic team here are very skilled and doing a great job of creating some of the finest guitars around.
