2018 Santa Cruz 000, Walnut/Moonspruce
Such a treat, playing this expressive and energetic 000 from Santa Cruz. 12 frets to the body with Moonspruce on top and Walnut back and sides, plus a slick setup that feels great for just about anything, straight fingerstyle, hybrid picking, strumming and flatpicking too. Solid dynamic range across the registers, with a quick response that makes fiddle tunes ring out well indeed. This beauty was built in 2018, but already has a wide awake and engaging voice—snag this ticket to ride and hold on!

If there’s one thing that binds together all of The Tree guitars we’ve seen, it’s clarity and power. This 2019 OM from Richard Hoover and co at Santa Cruz is no exception—more so since the entire body is built with heavily quilted The Tree Mahogany! The top is braced with Adirondack Spruce, hide glue construction throughout, and Brazilian Rosewood bindings and rosette for added class. Such a beauty; you’ll want to handle this OM in raking light so you can best see the chatoyance of the woodgrain—its three dimensionality is mesmerizing.

Herringbone trim package throughout, Dalmatian pickguard, and an enlarged soundhole. Waverly tuners round it all out. A real powerhouse is a thing that comes in time. And this 45-style Model D from Santa Cruz, which hails all the way from 1995, is precisely that. Elegant and powerful, with excellent balance across the registers. This Dread plays so smoothly, you can lean on the gas or step it back and this one keeps up just fine. The 45-style treatment is simply stunning from tuners to tail, all done in dark Abalone plus a gorgeous torch inlaid at the headstock with the SCGC logo snuck into the center. Play feel is silky smooth and easy on both hands; we even like playing this one with light gauge strings when it first came in (we’ve since replaced them with mediums). On the tonewood front, the back and sides are dramatically figured Brazilian Rosewood, and the Santa Cruz team topped this D with German Spruce, which isn’t something we see every day. We think that contributes in part to the smooth quality to the trebles here. This is a masterwork from Santa Cruz that we’re more than excited to offer to you.

Here’s a special treat. We’ve landed a 2019 Santa Cruz Custom that’s outfitted with the top shelf of the top shelf woods from tuner to tail: The Tree Mahogany body with Tunnel 13 Redwood top; Brazilian Rosewood bindings, appointments, headplate; Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons. The result is fantastic, proof that the fox at Santa Cruz are working on the top of their game. The voice is very smooth and balanced, with added darkness and color in the bass and mids for an enveloping flavor. There’s a lot of projection packed away under the hood, especially for an OM-sized guitar, and the setup is effortless to boot.

More of these, please! This D12 from the fine team at Santa Cruz is a wonderfully dynamic guitar, equally at home with fingerstyle and flatpicking. The voice has great balance and power, plus a meaty top end that really pumps out and away from the soundhole. It’s still pretty new from 2019, but already the voice is rich and open—especially impressive considering the Adirondack Spruce top, which is still opening up! 12 frets to the body, on a figured Maple neck, warms everything up for added sweetness, and this beauty was custom ordered with a 1 7/8” nut for an extra comfortable playing experience for the lefthand. The body boasts a lovely set of flitch-sawn Brazilian Rosewood with dramatic figure and dark brown coloration throughout. Ivoroid bindings, plus herringbone trim, round it all out.

Eric Skye and Santa Cruz—would could be finer than such a collaboration? Portland’s Jazz phenom worked together with Richard Hoover to bring the world their signature 00~Skye model, a powerhouse 00 built with Cocobolo and Adirondack Spruce, 12-fret neck for added warmth, and 24.9” scale for fat, juicy trebles. The body on this 2012 number is subtly deeper to enhance the bass pop (which it has in spades); we love playing this little gem in a wide range of fingerstyle settings. Soft V neck plus a silky smooth setup make for an effortless playing experience, and the petite dimensions kept this guitar in our arms for long periods of time. It definitely had an impact on our productivity, but we consider it a worthwhile price to pay, in order to play such a sweet Santa Cruz.

Like new, and wide awake. Ready for a 2020 Santa Cruz OM that sings like it’s been crooning for decades? Look no further: this Quilted Sapele and German Spruce number is the winner you’ve been looking for. We love the defined and powerful bass response—which happily pairs up with a meaty midrange and crisp trebles—and the fact that this one is essentially a brand new guitar (without the brand new price tag) makes it especially appealing. It’s a lightweight powerhouse at just under four pounds, slinky setup, and satin-finished neck. The voice strikes the fine balance between raw power and refined definition.

The Don Edwards signature 00 from Santa Cruz Guitar Company is a fantastic example of the cowboy crooner’s fingerpicking partner: easy on the hands, crisp and clear, with an even decay that doesn’t get in the way of the vocals. We’ve landed a beautiful lil Mahogany number here, appropriately dubbed the SCGC Cowboy Singer in recognition of western music’s inimitable Don Edwards. This one is #17, built in 2012 with an all-Mahogany body and 12-fret neck with Don’s signature and star inlays. Slotted headstock, Waverly tuners with Snakewood knobs—and this handsome plucker is only a little over three and a half pounds! The voice has a clean and balanced definition with a scallop-braced top, and packs a lot of projection, especially for a small-bodied guitar. It’s really a fun one to pick up; it’s really a hard one to put down.

Santa Cruz Guitar Company has been consistently producing Dreadnoughts for decades which have set the bar pretty high for all competition, and this 1992 VA (Vintage Artist) with “The Tree” Mahogany and a 100-year-old Sitka Spruce top, is here to make sure that bar is raised even higher. Excellently balanced, this Vintage Artist has lots to offer for both the flatpicker and the fingerstylist. Are you the former, craving a Dreadnought with rich, explosive projection, or the latter, needing a clean, energetic response and string-to-string precision?
Regardless of your needs, this Vintage Artist can more than handle them! You’ll rip through flatpicked Bluegrass tunes like they were butter for starters, then you can showcase this Santa Cruz’s delicate side with a fingerpicked Doc Watson tune–all the time enjoying the rich voice and silky playability. This is number two of just 10 VAs that Santa Cruz made with The Tree Mahogany, so odds are you won’t see another beauty like this one for some time.

Richard Hoover began building guitars and carved-top mandolins in 1972. By 1976 his focus was on the modern steel string guitar. The task of becoming a master at all aspects of guitar making is a lifelong pursuit, and Richard has patiently refined his craftsmanship and knowledge as his company has grown. It was and is Richard’s intent to translate his skills and sensitivities as an individual builder to an exceptional team of craftspeople, each of whom could become an expert in their specialty. Richard’s style of allowing his craftspeople to interpret his vision has propelled Santa Cruz Guitar Company to the forefront of modern guitar making. Each Santa Cruz guitar receives an extraordinary amount of individual attention due to our “bench style” of building, which necessitates that each worker not only perform his own specialty, but also review the work of those who have completed stages before him. Over half of all the instruments that we build are custom orders, reflecting to a high degree the personality and unique playing needs of the buyer. Every guitar top is graduated and tuned by hand to attain maximum resonance and sustain, ensuring a high level of consistency of sound within each standard model line as well as the ability for custom voicing. The balance, tone, volume, and response of a Santa Cruz guitar are established before the guitar is strung. By limiting the number of instruments built, we can practice a style of lutherie born from a genuine love of the guitar, as opposed to a production line approach that might favor greater numbers at the expense of our attention to detail. We believe that our approach ensures that every Santa Cruz guitar is exceptional. Our intent is to create a uniquely sophisticated instrument that will inspire and challenge its owner throughout a lifetime.
