2012 Traugott R 12-String, Brazilian/European Spruce
A pair of R Models from Jeff Traugott’s hands, with love. Adorned with Larry Robinson inlays and sporting primo-grade Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce, this 6- and 12-string duo cut a striking figure with sparkling Abalone trim and Venetian Cutaways. Each Model R is individually available for purchase!
The 12-string R offers a velvety alternative to the typical 12-string jangle. This is not to say that this guitar lacks projection—far from it—but rather it’s got an expansive voice whose octave pairs remain clear and articulate. Delicate passages are characterized by a notable clarity, and even when digging in with a more aggressive attack the 12-string wall of sound (so to speak) remains well-defined and musical.
A heart-throbbing one-of-a-kind, two-of-a-kind Traugott R pair.

This beauty has truly come to full bloom. We love the spacious, complete voice of this 2007 Traugott model R; it’s a fingerstylist’s best friend. The setup is silk smooth with a 24.9” scale that manages to ring out with exquisite clarity at concert pitch and right on down to C tunings too. If we had to sum it up in one word, we’d use “smooth.” It feels, plays, and sings like a professional.
Jeff used a set of premium Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides that boasts some serious figuring, and has an almost green hue in the right light. We’ve seen a few of Jeff’s guitars with this kind of BRW, and each one has been an exceptional piece. On top, he used German Spruce with gorgeous alternating colors along the tight grain. Elsewhere, this model R is appointed simply, as is Jeff’s style. We really appreciate letting the quality of the woods speak for themselves (both sonically and visually).Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitar building, traugott guitars, calton, fingerpicking, finger style

We knew we were in for a treat the moment we opened the case. It’s not often we have an opportunity to visit with an older Traugott (here from 1997) that’s been played in and opened up, and this is only the second one we’ve ever seen in Indian Rosewood. Which, while we’re on the subject, in no way diminishes the voice on this one compared with its BRW siblings: the trademark Traugott clarity, precision, and projection are here in full force. Additionally, the Sitka Spruce has had over two decades of music poured through it, and it shows; the trebles have a juicy presence that cuts through the mix. This is Jeff’s larger BK body, moreover, which lends an extra helping of power and sustain while remaining a comfortable and easy-playing instrument (weighing in at a scant 4lbs 3oz).
It’s a powerhouse, plain and simple. Ready to have a Traugott in your life? This one is a steal of a deal.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitar building, traugott guitars, cutaway, calton, fingerpicking, schaller, fingerstyle, finger style

We love Jeff Traugott’s work. And we love this 2002 Model R in particular. Chocolate dark Brazilian Rosewood paired with German Spruce, glassy playability, and a voice that’s opened up handsomely in the past 17 years. This Traugott has been lovingly played in, and it’s such a joy to hear the resulting clarity and projection. Jeff’s guitars are known for their precision and dynamic range, and this Model R is no exception. It responds handsomely to both fingerstyle and flatpicking, and it really soaks up altered tunings like DADGAD in a way that would be the envy of much bigger guitars.

Time has treated this Traugott well, indeed. Opening up since 2002, this BK model has an incredible voice today that’s equal parts clarity and power. This is Jeff’s large-bodied design that lends itself to both flatpicking and fingerstyle approaches—and we can attest that it thrives in both capacities. We were excited to discover that the back and sides came from Jeff’s special stash of his old-growth “Kentucky” Brazilian Rosewood (think “beautiful” times five), and Jeff sent us a letter of authenticity to certify the fact. Straight-grained German Spruce on top, Abalone rosette, and the fingerboard features position markers offset to the bass side.
Even with light gauge strings, we were able to take this one down to C# territory without the play feel getting slappy. This Traugott is a big fan of DADGAD and Open D as well. Standard 25.4” scale, 1.75” nut, and a 2.25” saddle spacing all felt natural and familiar to our hands, and the setup overall is slinky and smooth for effortless playability.
There’s a reason Traugotts are so sought after: surgically precise tone, and an understated aesthetic. Both speak volumes.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, brazilain, B-K, old growth, schaller, calton, flight case, finger style, fingerpicking, finger picking

How can one man manage to pull so much tone and understated beauty out of a few board feet of wood, a dash of bone, and a few frets? Every time a Traugott comes through our doors we ask ourselves this question anew. This 2011 Model R is, frankly, like having a six-string piano in your lap. The voice drips with butter-rich tone, but retains crystalline clarity across all the registers. Pluck the low E string, and your ear can pick apart the infinitude of over- (and under-) tones of the bass response–it’s like Jeff Traugott built an acoustic microscope instead of a guitar so you can hear an otherwise impossible degree of depth, color, and nuance.
The setup on the slim neck is gossamer, svelte as silk, and faster than you’d think. This Traugott R practically plays itself. Of course this guitar also features some of the finest Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce available to any luthier in the world; we don’t know where Jeff managed to find all this incredible tonewood, but boy are we happy he did! You can ring the bells that are these trebles for days and not get tired. Regardless of tuning, style, picks or fingers, this Traugott performs like an extension of your arm–if your arm was so shapely, agile, and resonant.

A 2016 model BK from tonewood virtuoso Jeff Traugott with Brazilian Rosewood, German Spruce, and a multiscale fretboard? The options are limitless. We’ll try to keep it professional, but it’s hard to talk about this guitar without using hyperbole to articulate its inspirational qualities. This is the sort of guitar that will do just about everything you want it to, and do it effortlessly with a shocking clarity. Note to note and string to string, this Traugott BK has pristine separation and sustain, making fingerstyle arrangements incredibly detailed, and flatpicked passages crisp and defined. The sustain is unwavering. Let’s call it haunting. In your gut you can feel the heft of every note as it careens out of the pearl-bound soundhole. The top is also bound in pearl, while the 27 to 25.4 inch multiscale fretboard remains inky black with only position markers on the side. This Brazilian Rosewood is from Jeff’s secret stash of “Kentucky” Brazilian, the stock of which was originally used in veneer mills outside of Knoxville, Tennessee around 1900 to 1920. This is the real deal: the same kind of Brazilian Rosewood found on the best pre-war Martins. It’s particularly special to Jeff, since he was able to repurpose such beautiful, old growth wood.
With a Traugott like this in your hands, bad dreams are a lifetime away. Don’t blame us if your personal and professional lives suffer from inattention.

Playing this guitar will make you want to shout! Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, Jeff’s trademark understated aesthetics, a smooth C-profile neck, gold Gotoh 510s, all wrapped up in a Mainstage flight case too.

If this 2012 Traugott R were a flower, it’d be in full bloom. The voice has clarity and openness in spades; the kind of string-to-string separation to breathe new color into each chord; a response at once swift and easy. This model R demonstrates why Jeff Traugott’s guitars are so revered. Jeff’s understated aesthetic is a perfect complement to the voice: the interplay of curve and contour, like that of the bass fundamental and treble overtones, is precisely executed and flows organically.
At a glance, the Brazilian-and-German–Spruce Traugott looks so natural as to have always been there, cradled in your hands. In the bass, trebles, and everywhere in between the voice flows from the soundhole as easy as breathing. Some great guitars have a big, flashy personality–this Traugott R achieves as much, if not more, in a refined package that belies an elegantly open voice underneath.

We’ve got another masterpiece in the shop, folks. A 2013 BK from Jeff Traugott Guitars! Traugott’s phenomenal abilities are universally known in the guitar world, so you know when a guitar comes out of his shop, it’s going to be a stellar instrument. Traugott’s BK model is based on Dreadnought dimensions in the lower bout, but with a narrow waist and tighter upper bout reminiscent of a Grand Concert, which creates a sound that has both the expansive low-end of the former and the expressive articulation of the latter. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a German Spruce top, naturally, give the instrument an incredibly complex tonal palette right out of the box, such that this guitar sounds more like an instrument built twenty years ago, not just two! And loud? Yes, this guitar’s got tons of volume, and sustain. The extremely well-balanced nature of the BK model makes this guitar excel in a variety of modes, and really sing in lowered tunings like DADGAD. Irish players will love how energetically this guitar plays, and the clean, articulate warmth of its low-end. The upper registers have lots of presence as well, but don’t overwhelm the instrument’s other registers. Traugott’s decked these guitars out with a Venetian Cutaway for increased ease of playing, and the overall build is surprisingly light for hours of comfortable playing–which you’ll be doing, each time you pull this work of art out of its Hoffee hardshell case.

Jeff Traugott’s work is highly sought after, and for a good reason: his guitars are singularly powerful and dynamic. The sonic expanses you can travel in this 2008 Traugott R, for example, are almost limitless. Startlingly straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are strong, well-balanced, capable of projecting the clean dryness of the German Spruce top right out into the airwaves. Traugott’s attention to detail is spot-on: the Brazilian Rosewood rosette is perfectly installed, and the fit and finish over Ebony bindings and Brazilian Rosewood headplate is flawless.
The curves of his larger-than-OM body are reminiscent of the surf at high tide: a swooping dip between the upper and lower bouts’ shoulders. This curvaceous body generates a dry, thoughtful tone, and the pianistic separation that fingerstylists cherish. Responsive across all registers, the lower and middle range has, in particular, lots of body, such that simply tuning down to Drop D mellows the entire sound and has a tight, articulated presence that’s so hard to find in lowered tunings. This guitar comes with a Calton Flight Case.

This Model R sports some of the nicest woods that Jeff had in his collection, the Brazilian is dark with some nice ink lines, and the German Spruce is tight grained with lovely Bear Clawing inthe lwer bout. It’s Jeff’s voicing that has really put him on the map, and that voice is in force here, the trebles are fat and full with plenty of power and sustain, the multiscale (25.6″-27″) even out the rest from punchy mids to full thundering bass strings. Incredibly sensitive to your touch, the richly figured and bookmatched Brazilian Rosewood back and sides underscore a tight response and sustain in Fingerstyle arrangements. Like many other guitar enthusiasts I picked up my instrument as a teenager and haven’t been able to put it down since. My interest in woodworking and construction developed independently at about the same age. I decided to try to combine the two when going to school at Evergreen State College. My first foray into instrument making was the construction of a dulcimer that I managed to cobble together with information I got from the Guild of American Luthiers.I returned to Northern California where I grew up; there I found a guitar and violin builder in Santa Cruz and arranged to work in his shop. Under his tutelage and with lots of help from a book called Constructing a Bluegrass Mandolin: A Complete Technical Guide (by Roger Siminoff), I built my second instrument, an F-5 mandolin.Needless to say, I became hooked. I started a small shop in a garage and began building my first guitar. After the garage I graduated to a small store, where a friend and I did repair work and built a couple of guitars a year. After six years I was hired by the Santa Cruz Guitar Company; there I was able to hone my skills in all aspects of guitar production and repair work.I left in 1991 to open my current shop, which is is located in an old industrial complex that now houses a diverse community of artisans and craftspeople. I moved into the empty shell and proceeded to design and build my dream guitar shop. While I was developing my work space the bulk of my production consisted of repairing old Martins and other high-end acoustic guitars. It has been my good fortune to do repairs for some of the premier acoustic guitar shops of Central California, including Gryphon Stringed Instruments and Carmel Music.Currently the majority of my time is spent building guitars, although I still do some repair work and have occasionally taught workshops on neck resetting. I’ve developed a line of guitars that have a clean, classic look and simple elegance. I really like to let the materials speak for themselves. Tone and playability are crucial and because each player has her or his own needs, I listen carefully and try to make each instrument one-of-a-kind.I’ve been motivated from the very beginning to try to be one of the best at my craft. This is the focus of my business. I work by myself and I love what I do. I hope I have the opportunity to work with you!Jeff Traugott
