2017 Ivanov Snow Parlor, Flamed Maple/Italian Spruce
Dontcho Ivanov does Flamed Maple right! This 2017 Snow Parlor combines a sleek, striking visual aesthetic with an expressive blend of warm bass notes and voluptuous trebles; not to mention Dontcho’s icy smooth setup and spacious 1 13/16″ nut for a play feel that’s easy on the hands.
The Italian Spruce top colors the entire voice with a creamy layer of delicious overtones which fill out the Snow Parlor’s tone–perfect for when you want that enveloping, lush sound. Open tunings are orchestral with this guitar (playing in Open D is really, well, open!). Dontcho’s craftsmanship is incredible with each joint seemingly seamless and an overall snowflake weight to match its name. Sustain and a small-bodied guitar don’t always go hand in hand, but with this 2017 Snow Parlor the notes hang for long seconds in the air.Additional Demo: https://youtu.be/GHWgPF2N858

Michel Pellerin is in fine form with this 2020 Folk 000 Premium Sunburst. Quick string energy, great headroom (especially for a slim 000), and a glassy setup makes for an engaging and exciting playing experience. Pellerin opted for finely figured Birdseye Maple for the back and sides which has been torrefied–maybe that’s where some of the extra bass energy comes from, or perhaps it’s the active X-X-X bracing system he used for the back–and a Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top was the obvious choice to complement. This is all tied together with a sweet and subtle sunburst, Rosewood bindings, and gold EVO frets along the fingerboard.

French-Ukrainian builder Youri Soroka manages to make even relatively new builds sound open, airy, and wide awake. This 2021 Torres Model is no exception, dressed up with a dramtically figured, four-piece CSA Rosewood back, old growth Indian Rosewood sides, and creamy Spruce top. The voice is immediate and emotive, with a colorful bass response to pair up with quick and vibrant treble strings, plus a rich midrange in between. Build weight is very light–3lbs–and contributes to the experience of playing a living, breathing instrument as you feel the vibrations in your hands and your chest. The rosette features green purflings and a sheaf-of-wheat motif that sets off the amber color of the surrounding Spruce, just a bit of added color to make it pop. Rosewood bridge plus bone tieblock, as well as Rosewood bindings and gold Pagos tuners with Ebony buttons.

To sum up this brand new 2017 Mountain Song Odalisque from Ken Jones in a few words: rich dynamism, ringing clarity, finely honed and opened up. Commissioned by one of our longtime clients, Odalisque #023 has every feature under the sun short of multiple necks or a multiscale fingerboard. No, really: dual bevels for the player’s arm and ribs, upper bout soundport, Tiger Myrtle back and sides, French Polished Moonspruce top, and an impressive display of Larry Robinson’s gifts as an inlay artist in the form of a fresh perspective on the traditional Tree of Life fretboard inlay. First Ken designed the Tree, then Larry executed it in fine style with Tiger Myrtle, gold and white Mother-Of-Pearl, and silver resin at the centers of the blossoms.
Acoustically, this Odalisque offers haunting clarity and the kind of immediate response that’s usually only found on completely opened up vintage instruments. The treble strings possess a bell-like color, and exhibit a delicious bloom after the initial attack which really fleshes out the sustain. Dropped tunings are bread and butter for this Odalisque; the bass fundamental is well-defined and really pops even when dropped down to C tunings. Frankly, it’s just a pleasure to play this guitar! From the Brazilian Rosewood bridge plate to the span of Robinson’s inlays across the fretboard, this Odalisque from Ken Jones is a study of lutherie’s finest points: resonance, response, and beauty.

We’re excited and honored to have Ciaran McNally’s milestone 200th guitar here in the shop–complete with his new “Ancient Torc” motif at the rosette. Both the back and top come to us as salvaged materials, Ancient Bog Oak for the body and Ancient Blue Sitka, both wrapped up in a gloss finish that really sets off the mineralized quality of these sinker woods. Along the neck McNally opted for a satin texture that feels feather-smooth in hand. While this is a brand new guitar, the voice already has strong string energy and separation across the registers–and that’s at day one. Add a few years to the mix, and the voice will be even more awake, if that could be believed.

This was a fun collaboration between Paul Heumiller and Don Musser. They opted for Adirondack Spruce over Figured Mahogany and a slope shoulder body, with some extra tweaking to the bracing for additional balance and responsiveness. Half satin neck feels excellent in hand, and as a subtle nod to Dream Guitars, Don inlaid “Dream” at the headstock in our brand font.

Keisuke builds flawlessly with a modern eye for aesthetics, curve, and color. A master of the form. This Presentation OM features one of his incredibly detailed mosiac rosettes, carved bridge, plus the contoured and sculpted headstock–for tonewoods, Ancient Japanes Cedar on top with Ancient Keyaki back and sides. The neck is finished to be satin to the touch, with a soft V profile. The result is impossibly smooth, and oh so lovely in hand. The voice is characterized by sweetness and a blooming quality in the bass register; articulate midrange; trebles that linger. Excellent note to note balance.
We see so many incredible guitars come through our shop, but it’s only the rare handful that instantly make a lifelong impression at the first pluck of the strings. This Fujii Presentation OM is one such guitar.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, 2023153, fingerstyle, modern guitar, bam, evo fret

Ted Åstrand grants us the resonant gift with this 2017 Å-OM. Madagascar Rosewood back and sides paired with a European Alpine Moonspruce top, 25 inch scale, and slotted headstock; “Scissor Bird” fretboard inlay and Koa bindings to tie it all together. The 14-fret neck is rubbed down to a feather-smooth velvety finish, and the C profile has a faint peak that almost minutely hints at a V. Nickel Waverly tuners offset the Rosewood headstock veneer, and the fiery-dark grain of the Rosewood bridge similarly sets off the creamy expanse of the Moon Spruce top.
This Å-OM has a lively voice which errs on the side of dry articulation over enveloping overtones. The upper register cuts well, pairs nicely with the crunchy mids. The bass response is light and energetic rather than dark, which isn’t to say the overall tone suffers from an atrophied bass. Rather, the voice is exceedingly well-balanced, with even response across all the registers and great note separation. The shorter scale and matte-finished neck make for a comfortable playing experience, and boasting a fighting weight of 4lbs 1oz this Åstrand feels quick and agile in your hands.

John Slobod has a nack for building OMs that exemplify the Orchestra Model ambition of “do-it-all” guitars. This 2013 OM with Palo Escrito and Adirondack Spruce is precisely that, at home in a wide range of settings and balanced across the registers for both picks and fingers. Not only is the fit and finish excellent, John’s eye for good wood is on point, too: the Palo Escrito has some lovely swirling figure, and on top he opted for a segmented rosette with what appear to be Rosewood blocks. Gold EVO frets for longevity; Waverly tuners for light weight. This 2013 Circa OM comes wrapped up in an Ameritage case.

Together in a 17 inch package, the result is a classically modern archtop that plays like glass in your hands. How sweet can a guitar be? Apparently, just a little bit sweeter. This 2010 Déjà Vu San Antonio 28 from Blazer & Henkes is what dessert would be if it also contained all the richness, vitamins, and nutrients of a three course meal. Which is to say, this B&H OM is the complete package. Receptive to a light attack, plus headroom for heavier, gorgeous tonewoods throughout, and an expansive midrange that makes for an enveloping voice that feels instantly familiar to your ear. The back and sides are Brazilian Rosewood, and on top they’ve used a set of Austrian Alpine Moonspruce with a bit of bearclaw figuring for added drama. Elsewhere, vintage 28-style appointments. Now, the practice of using moon-harvested Spruce goes back for hundreds of years, and Willi and Rudolph have garnered their premium supply from loggers who harvest strictly according to the traditional moon calendar for forestry, namely during a new moon phase when the water content inside wood cells is at its lowest and in the fall when Spruce trees are in their resting period. The result is a quality of Spruce that dries faster, matures more quickly, and is less prone to shrinking damage over time. We’ve always loved Moonspruce because, well, it sounds great! But there’s so much more that goes into making it such a premium top wood offering.

This is a custom build we spec’d out with one of our longtime builders and longtime clients, and the result is fantastic! Right out the gate, our latest SJ from Brian Applegate is raring to go. Quick and energetic voice, very snappy response that adds a bit of electricity to your playing, and all in a lightweight package (under four pounds) that feels like so many feathers in your hands and on your lap. Brian decked this beauty out with a 26.25-24.9″ multiscale, so you’ve got lots of room to tune to C on the bottom end, but the trebles stilll play easily with a short scale setup. Indian Rosewood body with Engelmann Spruce on top, EVO frets, cutaway, and Brian’s interlocking Abalone diamonds rosette (plus a subtly twisted series of purflings on the back) dress things up with some good sparkle, but let the quality of the tonewoods and the clean curves of Brian’s design to shine even more.
