Ah, the sweetness that comes with age. This Paul Fischer Classical comes to us from 1998 and exhibits all the qualities we find only appear after years’ of music: breathy, expansive projection, an articulate and developed midrange, versatile response for a range of styles. It doesn’t hurt that Paul used a set of striking Brazilian Rosewood for the body and Spruce on top, plus french polish throughout. The detail work is cleanly executed throughout, especially at the flower and vine rosette and tieblock. Snakewood heelcap and buttons on Rodgers tuners are icing on the cake. Additionally, the provenance of this Fischer includes previous ownership from Douglas James, classical guitar professor of NC’s Appalachian State.

From 2002, the “Arched Back Classical” from Jeremy Locke has Tasmanian Blackwood—which isn’t a common tonewood for the back and sides of a classical guitar, but based on what we have here, it probably should be more common. It comes with Gilbert tuners and a Gilbert-styled bridge. As the name suggests, this guitar has a carved “arched” back, giving it the classic Australian guitar tone. With Spanish Cedar for the neck, this is a whole lot of guitar for your money.

Jeremy Clark studied for several years under renowned guitar builder, Sergei De Jonge, before setting up his own workshop in Montreal, Quebec. Powerful projection, clear note distinction, and string balance are hallmarks of Jeremy’s work, and this beauty has those attributes in spades. Jeremy also embraces technology in his instruments — an elevated fingerboard and soundport are modern techniques he’s used here aimed at getting the absolute maximum tonal response from the instrument.
