2015 Åstrand Å-OM, Madagascar/Swiss Spruce
The voice of this Åstrand Å-OM is a far smoother spread than butter off the shelf, and richer too. Ted’s lutherie handiwork yields fabulously articulate and balanced instruments, and this 2015 Å-OM is no exception. We love how the tonal palette transitioned smoothly between velvety and clear and back again as we tried out various attacks and tunings. Individual notes seem to have a smooth, rounded flavor to them that hangs in the air around you.
This Åstrand is a fantastic fingerstyle guitar. Madagascar Rosewood back and sides, Swiss Spruce top, and a short scale fretboard (25 inches) for warmth, on top of a 14-fret neck for sustain and volume. Gold EVO frets won’t need any dressing for a long time to come, and the inclusion of a soundport in the upper bout guarantees the player will have enough “me in the monitor” when playing in busy places. A K&K Pure Mini is installed on the bridge plate, here with a volume knob added just under the lip of the soundhole.

In 2015 we met Swedish luthier Ted Astrand for the first time at the Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase, where were able to play two of his guitars, and bring one back to Dream Guitars to sell (it lasted all of about three days before it was sold). This year, we’ve acquired one of Ted’s most recent builds, a 2016 Å-OM African Blackwood and Italian Moon Spruce–and we’ve already found a home for this guitar, too!
Before we sent it to its new owner, we were able to photograph and record it at our showroom, and we’re very grateful for that: this guitar is an experience no one should pass up, given the opportunity. To start, the Honduran Mahogany neck has a satin neck that feel instantly familiar like your favorite old guitar, and the setup is dialed in for fingerstyle perfection; glass-smooth and low, buzz free, with a comfortable C profile for easy fretting.
Moving onto the body, you’re struck by the contrast of the inky dark grain of the African Blackwood against the cream tones of the Italian Moon Spruce top, and a quick glance under the hood via the soundport shows Ted‘s delicate bracing pattern that enables his tops to be so thin and so resonant. Across the fretboard you can see Ted’s collaboration with inlay artist Magnus Ramel, a piece they call “Particle Collision.”
The voice, now, the voice is something else entirely. The string to string balance is impeccable, perfect for the fingerstylist who needs a consistently even response across the fretboard without bass notes that overpower or shrill trebles. delicate overtones rise up from the middle and upper registers that color, but don’t dominate, the voice, and when we lowered the guitar into DADGAD and beyond, the tone remained crisp and well-focused. Needless to say, we cannot wait until the next Astrand guitar comes through our doors.

Ted Astrand approaches guitar building as a fine art: “I truly believe guitar-making to be an art form. Throughout the whole process of building a guitar I treat each object and peice of wood like its a piece of art.” If Astrand were a painter, his work would be characterized by smooth, graceful lines and the harmonious relationships of shapes. Luckily for us, Astrand’s chosen medium is the guitar, where his elegant aesthetic is given the opportunity to both inform the appearance and the voice of his work. The 2015 A-OM that we had in the store (for a matter of hours) has provided us with the first glimpse at his craftsmanship–and we wish we had a lifetime, instead. The voice is perfectly weighted between the steady, well-defined low-end and the shimmering trebles by a middle register which flows like silk. This guitar inspired thoughtful, introspective arrangements each time we played it. The instant you place the Madagascar Rosewood back and sides against your leg and ribs, the lightweight construction feels delicate, until you play your first chord and a rich, colorful tone bursts out of the Bearclaw European Spruce top. At that point, if you don’t feel something tugging at your heartstrings, you might not be human. Astrand’s 26th guitar is a resounding success as a fingerstylist’s companion, and as a work of art. We cannot wait until the next one falls into our lap.

Gerard Audirac began building his exciting classical guitar designs in 1976 from his shop in France. Nowadays they are played by the likes of Roland Dyens. The Cathedrale is powerful and dynamic, with stunning projection and clarity – no doubt contributed to by the large, elongated soundhole and special bracing. This is a guitar that can fill any hall. Composed of Indian Rosewood and Cedar, this Audirac has a 650 mm scale, and is 51 mm at the nut.

Here’s a lovely treat built by Mark Bailey for one of contemporary fingerstyle’s most famous faces, the one and only Preston Reed. Mark and Preston live just a few miles apart, and Mark’s been repairing Preston’s guitars, in addition to designing two signature models with him, for some time now. This is Mark’s PRJ-7 Jumbo, with Mexican Cocobolo back and sides, Sitka Spruce on top, and a multi-source pickup system combining a K&K Pure Mini with a Fishman rare earth humbucker/mic combo. Tying these two elements together makes for an incredibly lush and articulate amplified tone, and acoustically this Bailey is delightfully energetic, responsive, and loud.
For percussive styles, this Bailey is an instant fit, but it also performs perfectly for a variety of techniques and genres. The neck has a slim, quick profile and slender nut width at 1 11/16”, keeping that left hand relaxed and agile. We appreciated the extra definition and presence of the bass response, which at the same time avoids overpowering the voice. Big chord shapes and double tapping runs both come out clear and crisp.
Trimmed in a novel inlay material, Heathergems from Preston and Mark’s own native Scotland, this Bailey Preston Reed Signature cuts a fine figure in striking greens and purples and tans. Whatever our fingers threw at this guitar, it ate it all up with relish.Please note, this is Preston’s personal guitar, and therefore with us only in a demonstration capacity. 2006 must have been a good year for Victor Baker, if this 17 inch archtop is any evidence. Gorgeous tonewoods, dressed up with striking Snakewood appointments, capped with a Kent Armstrong hand wound humbucker. The back and sides are 5A tight flamed Maple, pairing up with a carved Sitka Spruce top, and Maple body bindings. The tailpiece is a combination of brass frame with a removable (via magnets) Snakewood top plate—simply pop the plate and swap your strings! Volume and tone knobs at the (also) Snakewood pickguard, which matches up with the (also also) Snakewood carved bridge. The neck is a super stable multiply laminated Maple number with flattened C neck.

Number 200 is a milestone, indeed, so why not celebrate it? Enter: Victor Baker’s archtop #200. Pulling out all the stops in 2007, baker carved 25-year-old Sitka Spruce for the top, pairing with tightly flamed Maple for the back and sides, as well as neck and bindings. The number 200 is inlaid at the top and back, and the fretboard is stamped no.200 at the bottom corner of the extension. Floating Kent Armstrong humbucker with volume and tone knobs, Ebony tailpiece reinforced with brass, and gold Gotoh tuners at the headstock. This 16” archtop weighs in at a little over six pounds, and plays very smoothly with a quick and lively response. The Armstrong bucker is rich and fat for plugging in, but this one holds its own when played acoustically as well.

Volume and tone as well a Delta Series Gotoh tuners with a 21:1 ratio make this a sincere musician’s tool for gigging or woodshedding.

It’s easy to lose track of time with this one. Jeff Bamburg’s OMB model comes to us as a responsive midsize guitar that soaks up open tunings and keeps the notes crisp and lively with a cantilevered neck and premium tonewoods. Gorgeous Bearclaw Sitka Spruce on top is here paired with Walnut back and sides and Curly Maple bindings, and we found the Walnut lent a dry, woody flavor to the voice that kept the mids and basses from sounding muddy when we went down to Open G. Rather, we found this 2009 OMB articulate and well-defined when we did so. Again, it’s easy to lose track of time with a responsive and engrossing guitar like this Bamburg in your lap. And we can’t think of a better recommendation than that.
