1996 Traugott RT 12-Fret, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
A rare and special treat, even among such unique pieces we’ve come to expect from Jeff Traugott: our 1996 Traugott RT 12-fret in Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce. Originally built for Martin Simpson, this RT combines a long 25 1/2” scale with a 12-fret neck for clarity and projection, and has sides which are slightly narrower than a regular R to sweeten up the bass response, to say nothing of keeping the guitar lightweight and easy to play. There’s a certain kind of intimacy to the tone that we haven’t found in many of Jeff’s 14-fret models, one that lends itself handsomely to open tunings and a wide range of fingerstyle approaches. In 2002, Jeff installed a new neck with double graphite rods. Wrapped up in a Calton flight case, this gorgeous RT is safe and sound. It’s ready for action at the drop of a hat.

Glass in spades, clear as water, balanced from bottom to top and back again. Of course it’s a Traugott Model R. This sweet slice of heaven comes to us from 2020, is further upgraded with Jeff’s ultra exclusive “Kentucky Stash” Brazilian Rosewood (plus German Spruce on top in classic Traugott fashion), and plays like grass-fed butter. The key qualities of the voice is clarity across the strings, and a transparent tone that leaves each register singing out in a way that feels authentic, clean, and true. It’s hard to put into words, but it’s this precise quality that makes Jeff’s guitars stand out from the ranks of our other amazing modern builders.

The fruits are sweet, indeed. The latest Model R from Jeff Traugott to grace our shop comes to us from 2020, and is already wide awake. Jeff’s classic combination of Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce is used here to great effect: exquisite clarity across the registers, glassy trebles, and a strong fundamental throughout. The voice is dialed in for maximum clarity, making this a great candidate for fingerstyle play. That said, this Model R also holds up well under a flatpick. It’s the sort of guitar that makes every note count. Jeff’s aesthetic lets the quality of the woods speak for themselves—and what a story this dramatically colored Brazilian Rosewood tells—with only Abalone to tastefully ring in the rosette. The fretboard and bridge are also upgraded with Brazilian Rosewood to make the German Spruce top pop. All wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case for the best protection money can buy, short of a security detail.

As it is with our own children, so it is with guitars: siblings stick together. When Jeff Traugott was approached with the concept of building two sister R Model guitars–one 6-string, the other 12–he saw an opportunity to create two guitars which would grow and sing in tandem and bring out the best in each other. These two guitars are built from matching sets of Brazilian Rosewood for the backs and sides which came from the same board that was saved from its droll life as a bookshelf and transformed into two astonishingly rich guitars. Similarly, the German Spruce tops are a matched pair, as are the Fossilized Ivory nuts and saddles.
The 6-string twin may have half as many strings, but it has half again as much bass and snap as its 12-string sister. Jeff’s taste for fine-grained Brazilian Rosewood, with its enveloping sonority, and his ability to voice the German Spruce top to accentuate the upper registers, combine in the form of a guitar with flawless separation of notes and a dynamic voice. Naturally a fingerstylist’s dream, this Traugott R exudes both sizzling responsiveness and sweet, subtle overtones.

Jeff’s abilities continue to astound: here he’s made a 12-string R with all the focus and precision of its 6-string sister. This is a 12-string like no other: where most 12’s have a big, brash voice, this 12-string is clear and articulate; where many 12’s fill a room with the sheer force of their projection, Jeff’s 12-string envelopes the air with the bell-like clarity and focus of each string pair. In a word, this 12-string speaks directly to you when another would shout at you. Fingerstylists will adore how well-balanced the guitar is across the registers, and the myriad colors that can be discovered in alternate tunings.

This is one of a pair of R Models from Jeff Traugott’s hands, with love. Adorned with Larry Robinson inlays and sporting primo-grade Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce, this R Cutaway cut a striking figure with sparkling Abalone trim and Venetian Cutaways. Knife-sharp trebles with a warm and responsive middle register, and that with a focused bass response to keep the voice tight and snappy. Jeff’s guitars are equally at home with picks as with fingertips, and we couldn’t help ourselves when it came time to dip into altered tuning territory—this is an incredible DADGAD guitar. A heart-throbbing Traugott R.

We’ve seen a number of Jeff’s R models come through the shop, and a fair number of his BKs too, but only rarely have we had the chance to see a 00. And that’s a shame, because this number from 2008 is here to tell us that Jeff has perfected the small body guitar just as handily as he has the medium and the large. What an exquisite voice, lovely balance across the registers and equal parts energetic and elegant. Lots of projection under the hood, ready to burst out of the soundhole with even a light attack. It’s really a wonderful example of Jeff’s lutherie chops. The classic Traugott combination of German Spruce over Brazilian Rosewood is here in full force; combined with a 24.9” scale, 1 3.4” nut, and 2 3/8” saddle spacing for a spacious, comfortable righthand experience. Try and find a bad note on this guitar, we dare you.

Crystalline clarity across the fretboard; perfectly balanced from bass to treble. This is a Model R from Jeff Traugott that’s opened up handsomely since 1999, and offers a glassy, engrossing voice for the fingerstylist who makes every note count. Incredible. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides paired with German Spruce on top, with a medium thickness, C profile neck that feels smooth and familiar in hand. We’re excited that this beauty has a Highlander IP-2 pickup system installed—reliability of a UST plus the warmth and breathiness of an internal boom mic. It sounds just as good amplified as acoustic. There’s hardly a mark on it; this has been a well-cared for Traugott. All the better to let the premium BRW back set shine! The grain has a gentle wave to it that’s set off by the brick-red hues and black ink lines throughout.
As do all Traugotts, this one comes wrapped safe and sound in a Calton flight case.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitar building, traugott guitars, fingerpicking, finger style

Each Model R is individually available for purchase!
The 12-string R offers a velvety alternative to the typical 12-string jangle. This is not to say that this guitar lacks projection—far from it—but rather it’s got an expansive voice whose octave pairs remain clear and articulate. Delicate passages are characterized by a notable clarity, and even when digging in with a more aggressive attack the 12-string wall of sound (so to speak) remains well-defined and musical.
A heart-throbbing one-of-a-kind, two-of-a-kind Traugott R pair.

This beauty has truly come to full bloom. We love the spacious, complete voice of this 2007 Traugott model R; it’s a fingerstylist’s best friend. The setup is silk smooth with a 24.9” scale that manages to ring out with exquisite clarity at concert pitch and right on down to C tunings too. If we had to sum it up in one word, we’d use “smooth.” It feels, plays, and sings like a professional.
Jeff used a set of premium Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides that boasts some serious figuring, and has an almost green hue in the right light. We’ve seen a few of Jeff’s guitars with this kind of BRW, and each one has been an exceptional piece. On top, he used German Spruce with gorgeous alternating colors along the tight grain. Elsewhere, this model R is appointed simply, as is Jeff’s style. We really appreciate letting the quality of the woods speak for themselves (both sonically and visually).Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, guitar building, traugott guitars, calton, fingerpicking, finger style

We knew we were in for a treat the moment we opened the case. It’s not often we have an opportunity to visit with an older Traugott (here from 1997) that’s been played in and opened up, and this is only the second one we’ve ever seen in Indian Rosewood. Which, while we’re on the subject, in no way diminishes the voice on this one compared with its BRW siblings: the trademark Traugott clarity, precision, and projection are here in full force. Additionally, the Sitka Spruce has had over two decades of music poured through it, and it shows; the trebles have a juicy presence that cuts through the mix. This is Jeff’s larger BK body, moreover, which lends an extra helping of power and sustain while remaining a comfortable and easy-playing instrument (weighing in at a scant 4lbs 3oz).

We love Jeff Traugott’s work. And we love this 2002 Model R in particular. Chocolate dark Brazilian Rosewood paired with German Spruce, glassy playability, and a voice that’s opened up handsomely in the past 17 years. This Traugott has been lovingly played in, and it’s such a joy to hear the resulting clarity and projection. Jeff’s guitars are known for their precision and dynamic range, and this Model R is no exception. It responds handsomely to both fingerstyle and flatpicking, and it really soaks up altered tunings like DADGAD in a way that would be the envy of much bigger guitars.

We’re excited to offer a like new, 2018 Traugott R in Jeff’s classic Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce combo. All that in a practically new package; already the voice is inspirational, and we can’t imagine how all the ways it’s going to grow and open up in the coming months and years.
The fit and finish are flawless, executed in Jeff’s restrained style for an elegant, understated aesthetic that provides a hint as to the kind of precision and control that the voice will offer up when you put finger to string. Time has treated this Traugott well, indeed. Opening up since 2002, this BK model has an incredible voice today that’s equal parts clarity and power. This is Jeff’s large-bodied design that lends itself to both flatpicking and fingerstyle approaches—and we can attest that it thrives in both capacities. We were excited to discover that the back and sides came from Jeff’s special stash of his old-growth “Kentucky” Brazilian Rosewood (think “beautiful” times five), and Jeff sent us a letter of authenticity to certify the fact. Straight-grained German Spruce on top, Abalone rosette, and the fingerboard features position markers offset to the bass side.
Even with light gauge strings, we were able to take this one down to C# territory without the play feel getting slappy. This Traugott is a big fan of DADGAD and Open D as well. Standard 25.4” scale, 1.75” nut, and a 2.25” saddle spacing all felt natural and familiar to our hands, and the setup overall is slinky and smooth for effortless playability.
There’s a reason Traugotts are so sought after: surgically precise tone, and an understated aesthetic. Both speak volumes.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, brazilain, B-K, old growth, schaller, calton, flight case, finger style, fingerpicking, finger picking

How can one man manage to pull so much tone and understated beauty out of a few board feet of wood, a dash of bone, and a few frets? Every time a Traugott comes through our doors we ask ourselves this question anew. This 2011 Model R is, frankly, like having a six-string piano in your lap. The voice drips with butter-rich tone, but retains crystalline clarity across all the registers. Pluck the low E string, and your ear can pick apart the infinitude of over- (and under-) tones of the bass response–it’s like Jeff Traugott built an acoustic microscope instead of a guitar so you can hear an otherwise impossible degree of depth, color, and nuance.
The setup on the slim neck is gossamer, svelte as silk, and faster than you’d think. This Traugott R practically plays itself. Of course this guitar also features some of the finest Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce available to any luthier in the world; we don’t know where Jeff managed to find all this incredible tonewood, but boy are we happy he did! You can ring the bells that are these trebles for days and not get tired. Regardless of tuning, style, picks or fingers, this Traugott performs like an extension of your arm–if your arm was so shapely, agile, and resonant.
