2016 Traugott BK Multiscale, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
A 2016 model BK from tonewood virtuoso Jeff Traugott with Brazilian Rosewood, German Spruce, and a multiscale fretboard? The options are limitless. We’ll try to keep it professional, but it’s hard to talk about this guitar without using hyperbole to articulate its inspirational qualities. This is the sort of guitar that will do just about everything you want it to, and do it effortlessly with a shocking clarity. Note to note and string to string, this Traugott BK has pristine separation and sustain, making fingerstyle arrangements incredibly detailed, and flatpicked passages crisp and defined. The sustain is unwavering. Let’s call it haunting. In your gut you can feel the heft of every note as it careens out of the pearl-bound soundhole. The top is also bound in pearl, while the 27 to 25.4 inch multiscale fretboard remains inky black with only position markers on the side. This Brazilian Rosewood is from Jeff’s secret stash of “Kentucky” Brazilian, the stock of which was originally used in veneer mills outside of Knoxville, Tennessee around 1900 to 1920. This is the real deal: the same kind of Brazilian Rosewood found on the best pre-war Martins. It’s particularly special to Jeff, since he was able to repurpose such beautiful, old growth wood.
With a Traugott like this in your hands, bad dreams are a lifetime away. Don’t blame us if your personal and professional lives suffer from inattention.

If this 2012 Traugott R were a flower, it’d be in full bloom. The voice has clarity and openness in spades; the kind of string-to-string separation to breathe new color into each chord; a response at once swift and easy. This model R demonstrates why Jeff Traugott’s guitars are so revered. Jeff’s understated aesthetic is a perfect complement to the voice: the interplay of curve and contour, like that of the bass fundamental and treble overtones, is precisely executed and flows organically.
At a glance, the Brazilian-and-German–Spruce Traugott looks so natural as to have always been there, cradled in your hands. In the bass, trebles, and everywhere in between the voice flows from the soundhole as easy as breathing. Some great guitars have a big, flashy personality–this Traugott R achieves as much, if not more, in a refined package that belies an elegantly open voice underneath.

We’ve got another masterpiece in the shop, folks. A 2013 BK from Jeff Traugott Guitars! Traugott’s phenomenal abilities are universally known in the guitar world, so you know when a guitar comes out of his shop, it’s going to be a stellar instrument. Traugott’s BK model is based on Dreadnought dimensions in the lower bout, but with a narrow waist and tighter upper bout reminiscent of a Grand Concert, which creates a sound that has both the expansive low-end of the former and the expressive articulation of the latter. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a German Spruce top, naturally, give the instrument an incredibly complex tonal palette right out of the box, such that this guitar sounds more like an instrument built twenty years ago, not just two! And loud? Yes, this guitar’s got tons of volume, and sustain. The extremely well-balanced nature of the BK model makes this guitar excel in a variety of modes, and really sing in lowered tunings like DADGAD. Irish players will love how energetically this guitar plays, and the clean, articulate warmth of its low-end. The upper registers have lots of presence as well, but don’t overwhelm the instrument’s other registers. Traugott’s decked these guitars out with a Venetian Cutaway for increased ease of playing, and the overall build is surprisingly light for hours of comfortable playing–which you’ll be doing, each time you pull this work of art out of its Hoffee hardshell case.

Jeff Traugott’s work is highly sought after, and for a good reason: his guitars are singularly powerful and dynamic. The sonic expanses you can travel in this 2008 Traugott R, for example, are almost limitless. Startlingly straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are strong, well-balanced, capable of projecting the clean dryness of the German Spruce top right out into the airwaves. Traugott’s attention to detail is spot-on: the Brazilian Rosewood rosette is perfectly installed, and the fit and finish over Ebony bindings and Brazilian Rosewood headplate is flawless.
The curves of his larger-than-OM body are reminiscent of the surf at high tide: a swooping dip between the upper and lower bouts’ shoulders. This curvaceous body generates a dry, thoughtful tone, and the pianistic separation that fingerstylists cherish. Responsive across all registers, the lower and middle range has, in particular, lots of body, such that simply tuning down to Drop D mellows the entire sound and has a tight, articulated presence that’s so hard to find in lowered tunings. This guitar comes with a Calton Flight Case.

The Koa has a deep, rich color and perfectly symmetrical figure on the back. The top is one of the silkiest pieces of German Spruce we've seen. It's full of medullary rays or silking, which is an attribute only the very best tops possess. Jeff adorned this beauty with a top border and rosette of select blue Paua Abalone and comes complete with a Calton Deluxe Flight Case. This is as far as we know, the only Mahogany Guitar Jeff Traugott has ever built. It was a custom project that Jeff really got into. He was excited to try his hand with this classic wood and did it ever work. This BK, Jeff’s largest body size, really has a cavernous voice with wonderful projection. The bass has the woody and clear Mahogany character and the treble fire as quick as a bullet. All of the Traugott clarity and richness are present but the Mahogany is more immediate and responsive. Great guitar for the player who want the Traugott character but maybe plays more Blues or other styles where quick response is key. A terrific guitar. From Jeff Traugott: “I don’t usually comment on my guitars but with this instrument I felt compelled to say a few words. I love this guitar and wanted to keep it when it was completed! This will be the guitar I make for myself when time allows. There is something very special about it, give it a try, it is calling out to be played and believe me when I say, it won’t let you down whatever your style! Lastly, I don’t have any price difference for woods when ordering a Traugott guitar so the price makes this really worth checking out! Thanks, Jeff Traugott“
