2003 Kim Walker SJ, Brazilian Rosewood/Adirondack Spruce
Here we have another incredible instrument from Kim Walker of K.C. Walker Guitars. This one is an SJ, or Small Jumbo, which is a medium body-sized guitar who’s shape is inspired by the Gibson J200 design. Fusing a familiar design with impeccable craftsmanship and the absolute finest woods available, Kim has struck upon what can only be considered the Holy Grail of tone. An absolutely flawless Adirondack Spruce top marries perfectly with the one-of-a-kind, Birdseye Brazilian Rosewood, yielding luscious, sparkling notes that leap from within, dance, and bloom before slowly fading. An inspirational instrument of the highest order.

This is a fine example of Kim Walker’s best work. This is single owner 000 that was custom ordered by a local customer of ours. This Walker guitar is lightly built for a wonderfully vivid response. The slightest touch makes it come alive. The mahogany neck has a very comfortable and soft “V” shape, and the Brazilian sides and back are beautiful and deep with lovely highlights. This guitar is already wonderfully broken in as evident by the way the notes rush out of the guitar, the projection is very strong and balanced. It’s very easy to see why Kim Walker is one of the most highly sought after builders of our time.

A belly bridge is employed for maximum transference of the string energy and take it from us, this is a loud 000. You just won’t find a better modern take on the prewar design. The dizzying number of wonderful guitars that we have on our walls might lead some to think that after a while, all these amazing guitars would sound alike. However, when a true heavyweight like the 2004 Walker SJ we have here today enters the fray, there’s just no competition. Kim Walker’s name is synonymous with unparalleled quality and tone–and we’ve got one of his masterpieces in the shop, begging to be played. A stunning Brazilian Rosewood set comprises the back and sides with a richly colored Adirondack Spruce top and Brazilian Rosewood bindings. In Kim’s hands, these woods have been given a rich, powerful voice. The low-end is charged and enveloping, while the trebles have a warm, complex tonality and sweet sustain. When played fingerstyle, the middle registers exhibit a smooth sinuosity and have mellow overtones. Overall, the registers are perfectly–and we mean perfectly–balanced, and the SJ body gives this guitar heaps of projection. Kim’s appointments are graceful, from his contemporary-inflected asymetrical Ebony bridge to the hairline curves of the headstock and the minutely curved body bindings. This is one of the lightest SJs you’ll find, but the build is nevertheless rock solid: this guitar exudes an aura of strength and longevity. If you are at all interested in owning a Walker, give this guitar a look, because let’s face it: they’re very rare, and will only become rarer with time. This is the guitar of a lifetime–don’t miss your chance.

One of Canada’s finest builders, David Webber is keeping the luthier tradition alive and well with the use of computer controlled machinery to maximize his efficiency, leaving more time and energy for the crucial detail work which separates a great guitar from a good one. The 2005 Webber Jumbo we have here is the result of Webber’s successful marriage of computer- and hand-made instruments: a guitar with a strong, vigorous voice that responds equally well to flatpicking or fingerstyle arrangements. The low-end has lots of bark, and the middle registers are big and clear, thanks to the time-honored combination of Indian Rosewood back and sides and straight-grained Spruce top. This instrument is, in a word, quick: very responsive, very clean. To top it all off, this Jumbo comes with a premium L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup system! This guitar comes with the original Datt case.

Quick, lively, and raring to go! Here we’ve landed a gorgeous Florentine model from the one and only Abraham Wechter, boasting a slim build weight just over four pounds with Mahogany back and sides and Spruce top, 25.4″ scale and 1 3/4″ nut, and light Maple appointments throughout. The flavor of Mahogany we’re working with here is incredibly light and amber in color–almost like Satinwood at first glance–really makes this one stand out. The voice has great balance across the registers, with energetic trebles that lend an immediacy to the voice that’s honestly great for both fingers and picks.

Dynamic is the name of the game when it comes to our Wechter Florentine crossover. Among Abraham Wechter’s myriad designs over the years, his Florentine is one of the most well-known, in particular for the ease with which these guitars can be played in a wide range of settings. The spacious body cavity lends extra projection and clarity, while the shallow C profile neck feels much more like your favorite steel string than a classical. The 25.5 inch scale shines for fingerstyle compositions, but has enough tension for use with a pick; the Barbera Soloist pickup amplified both modes handsomely.
Quilted Maple make up the back and sides, Red Cedar the top, and the rosette partitions up the natural Cedar grain with sparkling Abalone that has an extra three-dimenionsionality that quickly catches the eye. Of course this model comes with a Florentine Cutaway, and this crossover guitar also features a strap button so you can easily play while standing—no more relegated to squeaky chairs on stage! In incredible condition, this Wechter Florentine was built between 2005 and 2008 and has opened up sweetly, and combines the punchy drive of its Maple with Cedar warmth and overtones for a well-balanced voice, both acoustic and amplified.
