This is what it’s all about for us: working together with our builders for a guitar that is worthy of a family legacy. Our 2019 Odalisque build with Ken Jones of Mountain Song Repairs (the man behind our repair department) is nothing short of mesmeric. Presentation grade Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle back and sides, master grade German Moonspruce up top, 14 frets to the body and Larry Robinson inlays sprawling across the fingerboard. Ebony bindings exhibit a sinuous Ryan-style arm bevel on the lower bout, and Ken installed a small soundport to the upper bout for added creature comfort.
The tone of this Odalisque is quintessential to Ken’s Mountain Song ideal: smooth, velvety trebles balanced by an expansive midrange and clarity and definition in the bass. Note definition is at an absolute maximum; an ideal instrument for DADGAD or Open G, or even further afield. Kevin Muiderman applies double top designs to this Wave body for added power and push, without losing the warmth and roundness of Cedar. Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides doesn’t hurt, either! The neck carve has a slightly slender profile for deft lefthand work. Additional features include a cutaway and “wave” body style with a slight body wedge for added ease of play. A K&K Trinity pickup system and custom Pegasus case complete the picture. Here we’ve got one of their 40th Anniversary models outfitted with Amarant back and sides, Swiss Moonspruce top, and a gorgeous aesthetic with red-purple wine finish, faux MOP appointments, and custom squared bridge pins. Note the twin offset soundholes at the upper bout of the top! This, combined with a Falcate bracing scheme, makes for an energetic and lively voice with very quick, immediate string energy. We love the satin finish on a Padauk neck here; oh so comfortable and silky in hand. On the other side of the neck, you’ll find a 1 11/16″ nut and 25.5″ scale length for snappy note definition.

Michel Pellerin is in fine form with this 2020 Folk 000 Premium Sunburst. Quick string energy, great headroom (especially for a slim 000), and a glassy setup makes for an engaging and exciting playing experience. Pellerin opted for finely figured Birdseye Maple for the back and sides which has been torrefied–maybe that’s where some of the extra bass energy comes from, or perhaps it’s the active X-X-X bracing system he used for the back–and a Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top was the obvious choice to complement. This is all tied together with a sweet and subtle sunburst, Rosewood bindings, and gold EVO frets along the fingerboard.

We’re huge fans of Preston Thompson Guitars over here, ditto for Jake Workman of Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder fame, so when those two came together you know the result is going to be special. In 2017 Jake spec’d this model out with Thompson’s Shipwreck stash of Brazilian Rosewood (basically unavailable today) and some tight-grained Adirondack Spruce on top, then combined that with a hybrid of 21 and 18-style appointments. K&K Trinity dual source pickup system and EVO frets are the icing on the cake. Moreso, the PKT team built this beau with a slender play weight which makes the guitar feel extra alive and singing in your hands. Add to that a fast neck and great setup, and this PKT DBA-JW is one of those rare guitars that can immediately take you out of yourself to get lost in the music.
