This guitar is built from Reserve Master Grade Brazilian Rosewood and Old Growth Adirondack Spruce, bringing these exceptional materials to their highest potential. Dressed in classic 45-style fashion, but make no mistake—this is not just about flash and looks. Sonically, it’s every bit as impressive as it is visually.
It comes with a full neck profile, a tortoise-style headplate with a torch inlay, ivoroid bindings, and 45-style abalone trim and appointments throughout.

Wayne makes precious few of this model of guitar, the sheer amount of time, material and skill that goes into building such a guitar is impressive, and certainly limits the opportunity to make many of them. We recently lost Michael Keller, and the luthier community feels that loss keenly. So we’re delighted to have this 2014 Dreadnought in the shop to honor his memory and find a new home for it. Eight years old and waking up very nicely, the voice is open and expressive with great note separation. As a result, it’s at home with fingerpicking as well as of course flatpicking. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair with Adirondack Spruce on top, Abalone trim and snowflakes/diamonds position markers–and Michael upgraded this Dread with a soundport in the upper bout side. This has the effect of giving the player a bit more “me in the monitor,” making it easier to hear your tone when playing with those pesky other musicians in the group. When you want to go electric, the installed Fishman Matrix Natural pickup will take you there.

Randy Lucas nails the classic American Dreadnought with this gorgeous LD-28 dread from 2006, dressed up with Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, herringbone trim, and ornate Abalone torch headstock. Today in 2022, this Lucas boasts a wide open and expressive voice, especially well balanced across the registers. Through saddle at the bridge with plenty of meat left and great break angle for the strings; Abalone snowflakes, diamonds, and squares along the fretboard; Ivoroid bindings plus Waverly tuners. Strap buttons have been installed at the heel and tail to allow you to strap up into the driver’s seat.

Oh, the sweets to be had with a well played and wide awake Martin D-28. This beau comes from 1954–70 years young today–and has seen lots of musical action since then. We always love to see a guitar that hasn’t hidden in the shadows, but instead has been out and about and making music. We’ve got Spruce on top, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with some nice spiderwebbing in the figure, and a number of solid repairs from years of use. The top has the marks to prove it, and the neck is worn in with an instantly familiar feel.

A great example of an early ’50s Martin D-28 that’s been played a lot over the years, and is in great playing shape for many more to come. This one comes to us from the period when Martin was still using Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, by the 1950s they were using Sitka Spruce tops. There are some repairs, see our specs tabs for more details, but our repair staff have gone over this instrument from tuners to tail to confirm a clean bill of health. 1951 is a good year with this beauty in your hands.

A few years back, Martin ran a limited series of Golden Era models that were absolute powerhouses, and have since been followed by the established Authentic line (also great guitars!). Today we’ve got one such model, a D-28GE from 2000 that is accordingly wide awake and singing. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with Adirondack Spruce top, herringbone trim and zigzag backstrip, soft V neck with proper prewar girth, and open back Waverly nickel tuners on a squared off headstock. Slim playing weight under five pounds; forward-shifted and scalloped bracing.

We’re huge fans of Preston Thompson Guitars over here, ditto for Jake Workman of Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder fame, so when those two came together you know the result is going to be special. In 2017 Jake spec’d this model out with Thompson’s Shipwreck stash of Brazilian Rosewood (basically unavailable today) and some tight-grained Adirondack Spruce on top, then combined that with a hybrid of 21 and 18-style appointments. K&K Trinity dual source pickup system and EVO frets are the icing on the cake. Moreso, the PKT team built this beau with a slender play weight which makes the guitar feel extra alive and singing in your hands. Add to that a fast neck and great setup, and this PKT DBA-JW is one of those rare guitars that can immediately take you out of yourself to get lost in the music.
