2007 Bashkin OM Placencia, Indian Ebony/Italian Spruce
From 2007, we have a Michael Bashkin Placencia OM with Indian ebony back and sides—yes, you read that right, ebony! This is truly a remarkable and unique guitar, featuring Italian spruce on top. It stands out for many reasons. Despite being from 2007, it’s in incredible condition and has opened up to extreme heights. The subtle multiscale of 25″ – 25.625″ is almost unnoticeable until you look at it while playing, offering great sustain and sonic fullness in altered tunings while feeling perfectly at home in standard tuning as well. With a full neck profile and natural aesthetics, this guitar has a lot to offer any player, regardless of experience or skill level. It could easily be someone’s forever guitar.

Such a delight to visit with this beauty. Michael Bashkin builds premium grade modern fingerstyle instruments, just like this 2017 SJ with Myrtlewood back and sides plus Italian Spruce on top.The voice is characterized by clarity, balance, and smoothness, equally at home in Standard tuning as it is in DADGAD and some C tunings (thanks to the 26-25.4″ multiscale fingerboard). We are pleased to present to you a brand new Model No.04 from Dion James. Not only is this instrument beautiful in sight and sound, but also in its construction, which is one of the more unique instruments we have seen in quite some time. Where to begin? Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, Sitka Spruce for the top (this Sitka was cut in the 1970s; it’s been well-seasoned). As for the back and sides, this guitar features an active hollow core back, similar to a double top, carbon fiber bridge plate, U brace, elevated fingerboard, and a cylindrically arched top and back. We could go on and on about what all makes this absolute beast of a guitar unique and powerful. From the custom-made Scheller tuners to the captured nut, and the subtle multiscale of 25.2-25.6”, this guitar is AMAZING. Look and listen for yourself

We love, love, love this powerhouse 2021 G.6CA from Bryan Galloup. We picked out a fantastically straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood set for the back and sides, which was then paired with Italian Spruce for smoothness and sustain to match the power and dynamic response. A multiscale setup of 26 inches at the bass to 25 at the treble adds a touch of sweetness to the high-end as well. Moreover, this beauty has an arm bevel and a smoothly curving venetian cutaway for added creature comforts.

Taking this 2018 457 for a spin, and you lose track of time right out of the gate. This big boy fills your lap and vibrates your chest at first strum, and quickly sets the room to vibrating with the force of its voice. This 457 is a fantastic example of the expansive, enveloping, sonorous Klein sound—with some top shelf upgrades to set it apart. Mouth-watering gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (chocolate-dark and black ink lines) with Spruce on top and a multiscale setup oof 26 1/4” on the bass and 25 1/8” on the treble. Moreover, the neck, bridge, and fingerboard are all also Brazilian Rosewood—this neck is a special rarity, and adds smooth sustain to the midrange that really helps fills out the voice. The expansive 18” lower bout loves, loves, loves to tune down to altered tuning territory (Cadd9) is a particular sweet spot.

It’s not easy to make a new name for yourself in the archtop, electric world, but we think Tyler Wells of LHT Guitars has what it takes. This 2020 Rose Burl Fugue is nothing short of a work of functional art. Curvaceous yet comfortable, stands apart from the crowd yet at the same time approachable and familiar. This guitar feels effortless in hand, from the multiscale setup (24.7-25.7”) to the lightweight build and cutaway ergonomics. The neck and body are perfectly balanced to play off your leg when seated, and Tyler’s handsomely executed single bass offset soundhole broadcasts cleanly straight into the player’s ear. Acoustically, the Fugue has impressive presence and range, and would record very well on that level alone. When amplified with a Parallelogram Kent Armstrong humbucker (volume and tone under the Burl pickguard), the tone rolls out fat and round with fingers, and responds beautifully with added crispness and punch under a flatpick attack.
The body is Flame Maple, here paired with a carved Sitka Spruce top and a 4-piece Flame Maple neck with carbon fiber reinforcement. Black ABS bindings, and Bodega Bay driftwood burl appointments throughout give this Fugue its “Burl” designation (with a gorgeous, gorgeous red Nitro burst for the “Rose”).
The LHT Fugue is what successful modern lutherie looks like: pushing the envelope without forgetting its roots, exploring contemporary aesthetics with an eye for ease of play and an ear for dynamics.Other keywords: kent parker, arched top, jazz guitar, fan fret, fanned fret, 3007, ska, flamed maple, duane simpson

From 2007, a Bill Tippin Staccato in Mahogany and Sitka Spruce. This is his modern take on the traditional Parlor or 0-sized guitar. It’s the perfect body style for the player seeking a comfortable, easy-playing guitar without sacrificing tone. Like every Tippin, the Staccato boasts a big voice, strong projection, as well as depth and complexity. This beautiful guitar features very rare Cuban Mahogany (Swietenia mahogani), the densest type of Mahogany, known for its fine, rich texture. Its density provides greater sustain and a more complex tone compared to Honduran Mahogany. Bill topped it with rare Salmon Spruce, which was submerged for many years and exhibits more silking than you can imagine. Silking, or medullary rays, indicates that the wood is perfectly quarter-sawn and demonstrates its tensile strength.

Our first guitar from Gjis De Wit packs a punch. His Modified Dreadnought body, here rendered with florentine cutaway and angled bindings, plays great and has a voice equal parts power and articulation. It’s an excellent choice for fingerstyle play, or strumming when you need chords to remain crisp and clear. The multiscale setup is 26-25” with a unique fanning that makes the first position feel like a standard fretboard. Back and sides are gorgeously figured Narra, paired with Bearclaw German Spruce on top. The neck is actually Padauk, but Gjis has veneered its length in Ebony—ditto for the Spanish Cedar bridge—which creates a great contrast to the Narra/Spruce color scheme. De Wit painstakingly inlaid the headstock, heel, and bindings with a geometric motif, and installed premium Alessi tuners for added class. Additionally, the veneered bridge features individual phosphor bronze saddles for each string. All of this comes wrapped up in a swanky custom Art Case dressed up with leather—a fitting house for a well-dressed guitar. Interested in taking this one for a spin? Give us a shout!

Right out the gate, our latest SJ from Brian Applegate is raring to go. Quick and energetic voice, very snappy response that adds a bit of electricity to your playing, and all in a lightweight package (under four pounds) that feels like so many feathers in your hands and on your lap. Brian decked this beauty out with a 26.25-24.9″ multiscale, so you’ve got lots of room to tune to C on the bottom end, but the trebles stilll play easily with a short scale setup. Indian Rosewood body with Engelmann Spruce on top, EVO frets, cutaway, and Brian’s interlocking Abalone diamonds rosette (plus a subtly twisted series of purflings on the back) dress things up with some good sparkle, but let the quality of the tonewoods and the clean curves of Brian’s design to shine even more.

Brian Applegate builds one of the most precise guitars we have seen, which isn’t surprising, as he is a good friend of the legendary builder Jim Olson. This SJ Multiscale in Adirondack (Red) Spruce and East Indian Rosewood represents everything we have come to expect from a high caliber builder: perfect tone, feel, and playability. This is a prototype from Brian, his first foray into the world of multiscale layouts, and he pulled it off flawlessly with 26.4″ on the bass side and 24.9″ on the treble. The combination of Brian’s smooth voicing and the even tension of the multiscale makes this guitar superbly balanced and versatile.

Looking for something off the menu, but not too far afield? Try on our 2011 Baranik 00m (that’s zero-zero-M) for size. It strikes a balance between a 00 body and a full-on OM, giving the player a bit more oomph and projection in a trim package. Add to that a subtle multiscale fretboard (24.625-25”) and a cutaway bevel reminiscent of Uchida’s style. Cantilevered fretboard? Check. Seriously gorgeous Spalted Manchinga body? Yup. With a shoulder-to-shoulder tight grain Sitka top.
The voice features a focused midrange that cuts well through the mix, and errs on the side of dry rather than overtone prone. Mike’s neck carve and ergonomic appointments make for an effortless playing experience.

Here is a wonderful custom Michael Bashkin Multiscale OM, Placencia. Crafted from absolutely stunning quilted Mahogany and Italian Spruce, this guitar is a eye-catcher. The side soundport, custom rosette and amber side markers that capture light, it’s got all the nice details you could want.
The voice is focused and dense. The trebles are full and round in attack. The bass is warm and full. This is not a strummer’s guitar, but fingerstylists will love the oboe like trebles. The multiscale is a subtle blend of 25″ and 25 1/2″ scales so it’s very accessible but will make drop D and DADGAD work as they should. The short treble scale makes for easy playability as well.

Here is an amazing Bashkin with many upgrades and unusual figured Nara wood. Nara is Filipino Mahogany and it sounds as good as it looks. The list of options here is a long one, multiscale, cutaway, bound soundport, Nara, Amber markers, Amber pins, Koa buttoned Waverlys, Calton case and a K&K pickup. The really cool thing is that together these specs create a very subtle, practical guitar that really works. We love multiscale guitars, you won’t even feel the fan but the tension is so much more balanced across the strings. The Sitka top here is also very special and full of silky medullary rays and French Polished for ultimate tone.

One look, and you’re intrigued. One note, and you’re hooked. This powerhouse 2015 3GMS from Allan Beardsell‘s shop is here to dazzle the eyes and humble the ears. Let’s start with the basics. You know, like the double soundports which pour sweet active bass notes right into your ear. Or the oval soundhole and its spiderweb-like rosette, or the arm and back bevels which meld smoothly with the bindings. And let’s not forget the unique three-piece Selmer-style cutaway or the multi-scale Ebony multiscale fingerboard with 27″ scale length on the low E and 25″ on the high E. As if all that wasn’t enough, the back and sides are made of a beautiful set of Leopardwood, and the top is lightly figured Lutz Spruce. When these woods (and that exhaustive list of options) combine, the effect is overwhelming: this is a guitar with an electrified, energetic voice that pops, sizzles, and screams. The low-end, in particular, is very crisp and loud, thanks to the multiscale arrangement, and the middle and upper registers have heaps of headroom. Overall, the 3GMS/25/27 exhibits the kind of agility and responsiveness, perfect for fast, smooth playing, that one would expect from a much smaller build.
