2006 Ruokangas Mojo Grande, Spanish Cedar/Arctic Birch
A first for us here at Dream Guitars: a 2006 Ruokangas Mojo Grande. All the way from Finland, this Thinline Tele-style guitar is crafted from some rather unique tonewoods. The body is made of Spanish cedar, with a figured Arctic birch top. It features a maple neck and birch fingerboard, both of which, along with the top, have been thermally treated—literally baking in that vintage tone.

Kevin Ryan’s Abbey model takes the usual Parlor proportions and fills them out just enough to make it a Grand Parlor instead—domed back, 14 inches across the lower bout, and a 25 inch scale come together for warmth and power in equal measure. Add to that a gorgeous set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, and a Sitka Spruce top, and the result is an even richer, enveloping little guitar. Fingerstyle is the name of the game; the setup is silky smooth for effortless playing. Kevin’s slim neck profile fits comfortably in the hand, and it’s easy to lose track of time playing this one. This beauty from 2003 has been very well maintained—hardly a mark on it—and comes wrapped in a Calton flight case for maximum safety.

The riches run deep in this one. The only way to make Kevin Ryan’s Cathedral Grand model even better is to add time, which this lovely number from 2002 has in spades. Two decades of music have opened up the Italian Spruce top and Madagascar Rosewood body for a voice that’s butter smooth and round, with great note separation and dynamic range. In a word, expansive. The setup is silk-smooth with a 25.7″ scale and 1.75″ nut, arm bevel, and florentine cutaway. All wrapped up in a custom Calton case, this Ryan Cathedral Grand is ready for another 20 years.
