1995 Paris Banchetti Concert Classical, Brazilian Rosewood/Cedar
Paris Banchetti of Florida had been on the Classical scene for a number of years until we sadly lost him in 2019. Here we’ve landed one of his Concert models from 1995 that’s got a clean bill of health, gorgeous tonewoods, and is ready for action. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair with Cedar on top, 650mm scale, and 50mm nut. Built in the Spanish style, this Classical weighs in at a slim 3lbs 10oz, and plays effortlessly.

Here is a wonderful kept Paris Banchetti guitar crafted in 1978 in Miami, FL. Banchetti builds in the Spanish tradition and this Brazilian Rosewood and Cedar guitar is dark, warm and lush. It has not been played much in it’s life so the condition is nearly mint, but the wood and finish have dried and aged beautifully giving it a mature and powerful voice. Here’s a rare chance at a concert guitar that is over 30 years old but pristine and full of life.

Given a little time to open up, and this 2005 CX from Mike Baranik is singing like an orchestra. The voice is lively and energetic, and individual notes have a quality of weight and presence that really fills out the sound. It takes really well to both light and more aggressive attacks, too, maintaining that precision and definition throughout. The nut is a touch wider than average at 1 25/32”, which our long-fingered players found as a breath of fresh air. Additionally, the weight balance between body and neck favors the body slightly, which also makes for a very comfortable playing experience on both the right and left legs. The condition is excellent, par for the course for a well preserved instrument such as this Baranik CX, which lets the quality of the materials shine out: Bearclaw-figured German Spruce on top, dramatic Brazilian Rosewood back and sides; Ebony bindings and a tastefully curvy Venetian Cutaway.

We’re always excited to have one of Mike Baranik’s beauties in the shop, and this CX model from 2002 is a fantastic example of what happens when modern lutherie earns some age to it: powerful, wide open, easy playing. Gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair up perfectly with a European Spruce top that’s opened up handsomely. It’s a great option for fingerstyle, with it’s even-keeled response and string-to-string balance. We appreciate how notes seem to really play nicely with each other, making big chords sound out crisp and clear, or fast passages defined. The CX body is a great middle-of-the-road shape for volume and projection while still feeling comfortable and intimate in your hands, it’s the sort of instrument you can easily lose track of time with.

Silk-tongued with full bodied projection and range: our 2018 Baranik Meridian Concert. We love the lively, energetic response of the trebles, especially how well they pair with the mids and glassy bottom end. With Mike’s adjustable neck pocket, this Baranik is only ever a turn of an allen key away from perfect playability—and boy does it play sweetly. This Meridian straddles the line between fingerstyle and flatpicking exceedingly well; we really can’t decide which approach we like more.

We love a smooth sailing guitar. One that plays easily, offers an even blend of clarity and color, and responds to a soft touch as easily as a harder hand. The sort of guitar which satisfies, pacifies, just feels good. After only a few moments with this 2016 Baranik Meridian, and we knew we were in the right place. This is a fabulous fingerstyle instrument with a dark set of African Blackwood for the back and sides, and a Colorado Blue Spruce top with Manchinga trim and Mike’s “Southwest Blue” appointment package.

Looking for something off the menu, but not too far afield? Try on our 2011 Baranik 00m (that’s zero-zero-M) for size. It strikes a balance between a 00 body and a full-on OM, giving the player a bit more oomph and projection in a trim package. Add to that a subtle multiscale fretboard (24.625-25”) and a cutaway bevel reminiscent of Uchida’s style. Cantilevered fretboard? Check. Seriously gorgeous Spalted Manchinga body? Yup. With a shoulder-to-shoulder tight grain Sitka top.
The voice features a focused midrange that cuts well through the mix, and errs on the side of dry rather than overtone prone. Mike’s neck carve and ergonomic appointments make for an effortless playing experience.

Michael Baranik builds exquisite instruments and this one is nothing short of spectacular. For starters there is the Macassar Ebony back and sides with figure unlike any we’ve seen before. It’s very dramatic with dark lines and sections that look like feathers. Then there is a dark Cedar top with perfect grain. All of this is framed with Spalted Koa bindings, something you rarely see done on acoustics. Last but not least are Michael’s special bevels in the cutaway bindings, a string-through bridge and custom wooden tuner buttons. The voice is also amazing, it’s very loud and clear with depth from the Cedar and punch and clarity from the Ebony.

Michael Baranik is one of the new era of builders making exquisitely crafted instruments that excel at fingerstyle music. He strives for balance and pure tone and this guitar has it. This is his larger body JX but it remains clear and even while providing just a bit more bass. That makes this guitar very well suited for alternate tunings as well as Standard. The woods here are just beautiful and you get Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack a pickup and a Calton flight case for under $6k. That’s a lot of tone and beauty in this price range. Don’t miss this opportunity to own a premiere guitar.

This is our first Kris Barnett, here from 2019, and we hope it won’t be our last. Such a beauty.
