Veillette Gryphon High 12 Short Scale, High Tuned 12 Flamed Maple, Non-Cutaway
Here we have the first Veillette Gryphon in Joe’s new non-cutaway body shape. Over the years Joe Veillette has worked for a long list of star clients which include the likes of Dave Matthews, Jorma Kaukonen, David Lindley, Kaki King, Ani DiFranco and many others. Often his work included designing unique instruments to fit the needs of pro musicians. His newest design is this, the Gryphon High Tuned 12 string guitar. In short the Gryphon is a 18.5″ scale 12 string guitar tuned up to high D, just below the octave of normal guitar tuning. This gives the Gryphon a mandolin-like sound, though much more colorful and musical, yet it can be played like a regular guitar. Our first reaction was utter amazement at the lush tone and we can see this being extremely useful in many settings from stage to recording. The audio clips say it all, so be sure to listen to this one. The new Gryphon High 12 String from Joe Veillette Guitars of Woodstock, NY.

This is a piece of history, and it sings so sweet. New York’s own Manuel Velazquez built many of the U.S.’s finest Classical guitars from the mid 1900s all the way into the 2000s, and we’ve come across a beautiful example of his work from 1966 with this Concert Classical. Dark, dark Brazilian Rosewood paired with an amber-tinged Spruce top and Rosewood bindings. 650mm scale, 54mm nut, and a lovely playability as confirmed by our repair staff as they inspected the instrument, giving it a clean bill of health. There are some player marks on the top and neck which attest to this Velazquez having been played in handsomely in the past almost 60 years, and it responds easily to a variety of attacks. The bass register is well defined with a warm center, and the trebles pair oh so sweetly.

Silk-smooth playability and velvet in the voice make for a fine instrument. Our 2017 Artisan from Tony Vines fits that bill to a T. Tony’s chops as a player have molded his guitar designs from day one, and this particular model is tuned to the fingerstylist’s frequency with crisp note separation and a slim neck carve for deft left hand work. The mousse-dark set of Malaysian Blackwood for the back and sides with black inking catches the eye, and Tony paired that with a creamy Carpathian Spruce top and Bocote appointments for a soft study of dark and light. Bound soundport in the upper bout for a little boost for the player’s ear, and gold EVO frets for longevity.
This Vines Artisan is practically new, already smooth and articulate and colored by soft overtones in the upper register. A dyed-in-the-wool fingerstyle guitar.

Sweet trebles and smooth playability are the name of the game when it comes to our 2016 CX from Tony Vines. The classic combo of Indian Rosewood and Cedar gives the bass and mids an extra warm boost, and the voice overall has a lively energy to it that translates well into altered tunings. Tony’s CX design nudges the bridge to a sweeter spot on the top, giving the player extra color in the trebles that’s great for fingerstyle compositions and singer songwriter accompaniment.
This beauty is in excellent shape: nary a scratch on her. There’s also an arm bevel and soundport for creature comfort, and stylish hardshell case for protection that looks good, and keeps the CX looking good too. If you like slinky setups, this 2016 Vines CX has a delightful neck that plays very easily, even with a 25.5” scale. Available now!

Tony Vines has been building guitars for 26 years, and after a sabbatical he’s back with a vengeance. In 2000 Tony rededicated himself to playing the guitar and attributes his latest improvements in his instruments to his greater ability as a player. This guitar was custom-built for our shop with gold EVO frets, polyester finish, and Tintul bridge pins, and Tony insisted on passing through numerous sets of Indian Rosewood until he found the exact pair for this guitar; which he calls a perfect set. We elected to go with the Cedar top to add richness and beauty to this masterfully-built instrument, and the result is even richer and expressive than we’d hoped.

Tony Vines found some beautiful Honduran Rosewood, put it together with a rich-looking Redwood top, and out came a guitar with lots of spank and sparkle. This baby’s got great balance and rich tone. The side soundport give the player a little more of the sound. The Honduran has great figure and lovely sapwood drama. The Redwood top has lots of medullary rays and is well quartered for tone.

Here’s a great player from Tony Vines. The Quilted Sapelle is just beautiful and it’s matched with a sweet Cedar top to round out the tone nicely. The multi-part mahogany/maple neck adds another dimension. With this one I particularly enjoyed playing light fingerstyle or digging in for some bluesy vibes, but she also holds up to a vigorous strum. Quite versatile.

John Walker was a long time employe of the Gibson Guitar Company, he even helped start the custom shop. From there he went on to help at the Gurian factory, creating many of the pins and purflings you see on the bigger factory made guitars. It is no surprise to us that he builds incredible guitars. This is the Wise River model in Adirondack Spruce and Mahogany. Old Gibson fans are going to love the look, feel and sound of this guitar. It has that classic smooth tone we expect from a slope shoulder dread that we find works well for fingerpicking and strumming.
