2001 Kim Walker Dreadnought, Cocobolo/Adirondack Spruce
Our Kim Walker Dreadnought is a bona fide showstopper. Rich, red Cocobolo back and sides paired with an Adirondack top and Ivoroid trim, with Waverly tuners and a 25.4”/1.75” setup that feels easy on the hands for both flatpicking or even fingerstyle. This Walker Dreadnought comes to us from 2001 and is the only Dreadnought we’ve ever seen from Mr. Walker, but with only light play wear—Kim’s excellent fit-n-finish here makes for a striking, very clean guitar. We find the voice to be well balanced and clear, with great note separation and drive. This Dread is a smooth operator in every sense of the word, and it’s only going to get even better.

It’s that good. The only way a Kim Walker could sound better to our ears is if it’s had decades of music put through its fibers–and this 2000 Walker SJ A Deluxe has that in spades. Wide awake and oh so expansive. Rich! In a word. But also so clean, clear, and expressive. The Sitka Spruce top has some sweet bearclaw figuring, and pairs perfectly with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Ivoroid bindings, and a delicate vine-and-flower at the headstock. This comes in with Kim’s Deluxe A appointment package, which we love for its understated aesthetic that channels to the timelessness of the classic American flattop in Kim’s own way.

Kim Walker continues to be one of the most sought after modern makers. And why? Because each and every guitar of his contains a heaping spoonful of power, balance, clarity, and dynamic range. This 2012 OM, dressed up with Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce plus Curly Maple bindings, has all of that in spades. The high end has a rich, expressive quality that enriches the whole voice, and the bass is crisp, expansive, but perfectly balanced against the warmth of the midrange. In short, a perfect fingerstyle instrument. With a 25.4″ scale and Adi top, this Walker also has the headroom for flatpicking ands trumming work as well. The Brazilian Rosewood comes from a select stash that Kim acquired from Martin in the early 1970s, making this Walker even more desirable.

It’s guitars like this that get us out of bed in the morning. Kim Walker knows exactly how to get every last ounce out of his guitars. We were happy to take this 2004 SJ A Deluxe—and even happier to send it right on to its new home before we could list it. Flamed Maple back and sides, Bearclaw German Spruce top, a gorgeous light tobacco burst everywhere, and dark green 42-style Abalone trim that’s reminiscent of prewar Martin inlays. The kind of clarity and response that we’ve come to expect from each Kim Walker? This SJ is no exception. The bass retains a clean and enveloping fundamental without overpowering the voice, and we loved the neck carve, a slightly flattened C shape. Gold Waverly tuners and a Calton case don’t hurt, either.

This one won’t be here long. A Kim Walker SJ from 2000 that’s decked out in a dark sunburst, Indian Rosewood back and sides, and a Sitka Spruce top. This Sitka was 25-years-old then, which makes it 45 now! We’ve played several of Kim’s guitars built around this time, and each one had a little something special to the voice (and that’s beyond the already incredible tone we associate with Kim’s work). We love how lively and responsive this one is. It’s lightweight, just over four pounds, and it plays like grass-fed butter. What more can you ask for? Come and get it while you can!

Pure magic. That’s what this Kim Walker SJ is. Pure, beautiful magic. Brick-red Cocobolo back and sides with a Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top that Kim confirmed was part of a series of sets that turned out even better than he had hoped—we’ve seen a few of them and can completely agree. This beauty is from 2001 and has a few marks to prove it’s been an active music maker, and the setup is slinky for just about anything you want to do. Open G? Fantastic. Flatpicking in Standard? Yes-yes-yes. From tuner to tailblock, this Kim Walker SJ Cutaway is a bombshell, one of the best flattops you will ever see or hear.

If we could play Kim Walker guitars all day, trust us, we would. Kim’s instruments are what we like to call Universal Favorites: there’s enough of a vintage air to appease the staunchest Martin-phile, more than enough clarity and control to make the fingerstylist drool, and a rich resonance and sonority for the guitarist who craves the modern flavor you find from the finest luthiers active today like Ervin Somogyi and Jeff Traugott. Case in point: our 2009 Walker OM in Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce.
Kim’s Mahogany guitars don’t sound like Mahogany guitars. Or rather, they do have the woody crunch and attack of a Mahogany instrument, but somehow Kim fuses that flavor with a bit of the Rosewood propensity for overtones and dark bass. The result is a voice simultaneously sonorous and punchy. Check out the demo for a hint of what we mean by that. The aesthetic is understated, so the natural beauty of Mahogany and Adirondack are on high display here. These unassuming appointments give this Walker OM the character of the quiet kid in the corner whose got the voice of an angel. All you have to do is put pick or fingertip to string, and this OM will sing the pants of a trouser salesman.
Walker has once again closed his waiting list (just too many on the books already!), so this is a rare opportunity for you to snag one of Kim’s maestro works without the ten year waiting list—if it ever opens up again! Lutherie beauty like this won’t linger for long.
This particular Walker OM was used on our own Al Petteway’s recent recording, The Collector’s Passion, track five, “Thumbing It.” Here’s a link to the album: https://www.dreamguitars.com/shop/guitar-accessories/music-cds-and-tabulature/the-collector-s-passion-by-al-petteway-download-mp3.html

Grace, clarity, and definition are the first characteristics that come to mind when playing this 2014 OM from Kim Walker. Individual notes have incredible definition and presence; chords ring out in brilliant acoustic technicolor; balanced across the spectrum. Kim Walker’s guitars are, for us, a gold standard against which to compare other instruments. And of course the materials Kim chose help reinforce that. Top shelf Brazilian Rosewood is paired with a tight-grained Italian Spruce top with a touch of amber color. Abalone appointments (including a flower and vine inlaid at the headstock), Waverly tuners with black pearl knobs. Flawless finish throughout, and a glass-smooth neck to round it out.

Here’s one to write home about. An incredible example of Kim Walker’s work, this 2004 SJ in Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce is just about perfect. Rich, enveloping bass notes balanced against clear treble strings like bells, with an articulate and even-keeled midrange to span the gap. With a 15 7/8” lower bout and 25.4” scale, this Kim Walker has lots of projection for when you need it, but the top is voiced for even a delicate attack to bring out lots of color and musicality. Kim finished this one with a thin varnish finish that keeps the tonewoods as vibrant and resonant as possible—and it shows. Lots of headroom, and the setup is glassy to boot. Playing this Kim Walker SJ is an experience of original inspiration. Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, abalone, maple, waverly, inlay, cedar creek

We’d take this Kim Walker 000 over an ice cream sundae any day of the week—twice as sweet and no risk for cavities. Looking about as pretty as a fresh-minted penny but played in like a 50s silver dollar, this handsomely opened up slice of traditional taste from Kim is a dyed-in-the-wool home wrecker to your current collection. Aged Sitka Spruce top, light caramel-stained Mahogany back and sides, and a dark tortoise-style pickguard with bits of Spruce peaking up through the clear bands in the guard.
The 12-fret neck carve is generously curved in the C persuasion, and the Waverly tuners operate like the well-greased machines they are. While yes, this 12-fret Style C is from 1999, it’s in superb condition with but the faintest of fret wear, great playing action, and heaps of meat left in the saddle. Kim Walker’s guitars almost never crop up on the used market, so when’s the next time you’re like to see a piece of Mahogany and Sitka juicy tone to spare like this? So are you interested yet in the intersection between treble bells and woody bark, a dash of 12-fret richness and a propensity for open tunings? Congratulations: you have arrived at your destination. Don’t forget to breathe when you play this guitar; we don’t want anyone fainting on account of our little ole’ Kim Walker 000.

A 2002 Kim Walker SJ in Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce—need we say more? Kim’s guitars need no introduction, but we can’t help but gush about this one. Heaps of headroom, a bass response you feel all the way in your gut, and yet a voice balanced for fingerstyle, or flat picking, or anything in between. A beautifully inlaid Abalone flower adorns the headstock with a touch of elegance, and the Sitka Spruce top has dramatic bearclaw figure to complete the portrait.
An incredible instrument; it’s an orchestra wrapped up in six strings. We’d recommend taking this one down to DADGAD or beyond (check out the video below where Clive Carroll takes the bess E all the way down to B!) for an experience in baritone growl with standard play feel. The Walker’s rich, dynamic response, regardless of tuning, will keep you playing for long hours. Guitars of this calibre come onto the used market but rarely, and the proof is in the pudding: you won’t want to let this one go.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerpicking, waverly, bearclaw sitka, jumbo
