2004 Borges OM-28 Sunburst Indian/Adirondack Red
Very few new Borges are being built so we are pleased to have found this lovely OM from Julius. The sunburst and the cutaway gives this guitar an eye-catching appeal, but it’s the tone that will amaze you. The style harks back to yesteryear, but the quality is all today. Excellent fit & finish throughout and the voice is clear and strong.

We’re no strangers to Mirko Borghino’s work here at Dream Guitars. Not only is he the maker of John McLaughlin’s Shakti (here we’ve got one of his McLaughlin Signature Series in right now, check it out: https://www.dreamguitars.com/shop/builders/borghino-guitars.html), he also builds a wide range of steel and nylon string instruments. And then there’s creatures like the Mirragio 7. An archtop engineered for the veteren 7-string player, but also accessible and appealing to the 7-string-curious-6-string player. Effortless is the experience of playing this beauty from 2018. We currently have it set up with roundwounds, and it would also be a beast with flats–but currently it’s got a bit extra bite in the voice, which the custom I-Spira Replica Vintage pickup takes to handsomely. The body is figured European Maple with Ziricote bindings and appointments throughout; Italian Spruce top; and a flame Maple neck that manages to retain a C profile even as wide as it is with the added seventh string. That in itself is a feat.
Hands down, this 2018 Borghino Mirragio 7 is a complete instrument, designed for extended range while maintaining playability and comfort. Sky’s the limit.

A work of art in quite its own category, and one which engages with the player and audience to create new sonic experience—the Borghino Shakti Deluxe. Designed in collaboration with John McLaughlin, this instrument couples a Jumbo flattop body with a fast neck and seven sympathetic strings strung diagonally across the soundhole. The fretboard is scalloped and set up with light strings to facilitate frictionless runs and added latitude for bending vertically and horizontally.
The sympathetic strings are also also to be strummed, or plucked depending on your attack and use of fingers or picks, in addition to serving to add sympathetic resonance. This latter effect leads to an intensely enveloping voice that is quite honestly a thing unto itself.
Borghino has installed a Barbera Soloist pickup system for both sets of strings to best capture the complexity of the Shakti sound (including several audiophile reference cables for maximum fidelity), and added dramatic arm & rib bevels to the body for added comfort when playing. Additionally, the body has been built with a subtle Manzer Wedge, meaning the bass side is narrower than the treble side, pivoting the top back towards the player and allowing for easier right arm access. Tightly figured Ziricote back and sides pair with Bearclaw Italian Spruce on top, extensive Abalone appointments, and a custom case to house this feat of lutherie.
In collaboration with John McLaughlin, Mirkho Borghino will donate $3000 of the sale of Shakti Deluxe #1 to the Cancer Institute of Miano, Italy: https://www.istitutotumori.mi.it/en/home.Other keywords: fingerstyle, luthier, 1 of 10, modern guitar, indian jazz, indian classical, carnatic, 2019

Italy’s Mirko Borghino has collaborated with Italy’s Francesco Buzzurro for this boutique hybrid archtop nylon string 2019 BB1 equally at home for jazz and the classical repertoire. An arched Italian Walnut body is paired with a carved Italian Spruce top from the Val di Fiemme, Alessi tuners, and the dynamite Graph Tech Ghost nylon string pickup system. This offers both 1/4” and MIDI outputs plus volume knobs for both outputs, and bass, treble, mid, and mid sweep tone. So many options! The Borghino BB1 is immensely fun to play, hands down. It handles a wide range of styles and attacks with aplomb, plays effortlessly, and has a lively and quick response that translates perfectly from an acoustic setting into amplified territory.

What is a musician but one who constantly pushes on against the bleeding edge of sound? What is a luthier but one with that same drive, who challenges convention with their ceaseless experimentation? John McLaughlin (of Shakti fame) is one such musician, just as Mirko Borghino is one such luthier. The brand new Shakti model we have here today stands between these two great men as the very image of experimentation, and the means to achieve it.
McLaughlin’s Indian fusion band from the 1970s, Shakti, offered one of the first tastes of the rich waters spanning the continents of Indian Classical music and Jazz–and at the heart of this group was McLaughlin and the first iteration of this guitar, all scalloped frets and diagonal sympathetic strings. The Borghino Shakti model here is the most recent version, done up in Madagascar Rosewood and Italian Spruce with dual K&K Fantastick undersaddle pickups and a stereo output which allows the player to amplify the regular bridge, the sympathetic strings, or both. The scalloped frets make for a truly featherweight fretting experience (no friction from your fingertips and the fretboard to slow you down), and it’s easy to bend strings far and fast in the fashion of a Sitar. The seven diagonal strings offer complex overtones simply from the energy of the regular strings–but you can pluck or strum these baritone strings as well for a burst of color and volume. Borghino’s attention to detail is surgical: the Abalone trim and rosette are stunning, crisply executed, and the scalloping of the fretboard is smooth and graceful.
For a guitar experience unlike anything else, this feat of lutherie is worth every penny. Losing yourself in your music is unavoidable with your hands on this Shakti.

We have been consistently blown away by the work of Marco Bortolozzo, this example continues this pattern. A design that is modern, innovative and follows function. Threading the needle between an 0 and 00, this 0.5 12-fret manages to feel cozy and intimate in your arms at the same time that it belts out some serious projection and velvety mids. Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce pair up for sweet trebles and a crisp bass response. String-to-string balance is dialed in with the fingerstylist in mind; we found country blues picking brought out more crunch in the mids, but with slow pieces the tone smoothed over as though it was a completely different guitar. In a word: dynamic.
Boswell’s lutherie career is firmly rooted in the repair tradition, and it’s quickly evident that this has honed his eye for fit and finish to a surgeon’s precision. The light, vintage pickguard matches the herringbone trim and Ebony belly bridge, and the lines of the slotted headstock are sharp and well-executed. Weighing in at a trim 3lb 13oz, this 0.5 may feel like a featherweight, but there’s some serious muscle at work under the hood. There’s a lot of great 0 and 00 guitars out there, but this 0.5 stands apart from the throng with its smooth response, playability, and elegant aesthetics.
