2020 Bouchereau Maelstrom BC, Granadillo/Sinker Redwood
Much like its namesake, this Maelstrom BC from Loïc Bortot of Bouchereau Guitars has power and intensity in spades. Fitting descriptors for a baritone of this calibre! Highlighting Granadillo for the back and sides, plus Sinker Redwood for the top, the voice marries warmth to that power for an enveloping quality that surrounds the player. Amboyna burl appointments provide a gorgeous aesthetic. Outlined with crisp Maple bindings to match the multi-piece Maple neck, this guitar has immense presence in both form and sound. Low end power and crystalline clear trebles.

Loïc Bortot of Bouchereau Guitars is here with a powerhouse MJ.C small jumbo in Honduran Mahogany and Alpine Spruce that’s a force to be reckoned with. Smooth balance across the registers, plus precise trebles to cut through the mix; a dynamic color palette in the mids that really blooms in lowered tunings; and a crisp bottom end to tie it together. The woods are gorgeous, especially the tightly figured Honduran Mahogany back and sides, which Bortot pairs up with Rosewood bindings for an understated look. The body and headplate are buffed to a clear gloss, but the neck is satin smooth, velvet to the touch. We’re very much fans of this neck. The rosette features an interlocking motif for centerpiece. Throw in an arm bevel for creature comfort, and you’ve got a brand new MJ.C that’s as easy on the eyes as it is on the ears, and even the hands.

Our latest OM from Loïc Bortot of Bouchereau Guitars feels cozy and intimate in your arms while boasting a rich tone and string-to-string balance. Beautiful Cocobolo Rosewood for the back and sides is paired with an Engelmann Spruce top and black Ebony bindings and a satin Mahogany neck. Loïc’s “interlace” rosette continues the Cocobolo-and-Ebony motif around the soundhole, which also ties together with the headstock and magnetic truss rod cover.
Lightweight and agile in your hands, this Mistral OM-C is an obvious choice for the fingerstylist who spends equal time in standard and altered tunings. The balanced voice keeps arrangements clear and defined, while the overall energy keeps your music projecting far and away. This Bouchereau is brand new and eager to be played. We recommend starting right away.

The latest Mistral from Bouchereau Guitars has stolen our hearts, or at least our ears. Not only is this Mistral a knockout in Quilted Sapele and salvaged Sitka, it’s got the voice to match. The sensation of the glossy Mahogany neck like running your hands through silk.
An excellent choice for fingerstyle, our 2017 Mistral has an extra dose of warm riches in its middle register, which pair sweetly with a treble response that’s prone to overtones and a subtle blooming effect after the initial attack. Dropping down into DADGAD or beyond, the setup remains responsive; but there’s so much going on just in Standard you might never want to go anywhere else. The Florentine Cutaway and elevated fingerboard will appeal to players who aren’t afraid of exploring the upper regions of the fretboard. The neck profile is a faintly flattened C shape and joins the body at the 14th fret. Lightweight Schertler tuners, magnetic truss rod cover, bone nut & saddle—like we said, this Bouchereau aces both the visual and acoustic tests with flying colors.

We’re quite excited for this Mistral OM as the start of our relationship with Canada-based builder Loïc Bortot of Bouchereau Guitars–one strum, and you’ll see why. This 2016 Mistral is a finely-honed machine capable of rendering your black-and-white arrangements in full technicolor. The voice is remarkable: profoundly clear, instantly responsive, a focused edge with flatpicks, enveloping and colorful with fingertips. With its wedge-shaped Ziricote-and-Lutz–Spruce body and slim neck for fast fretting, this Mistral is built with a smaller person in mind, but still effortless to play if you’re of a larger persuasion.
The setup is so glassy smooth it’s as though fretting notes were as easy as breathing. We put the Mistral through its paces in Standard, DADGAD, and Cadd9, and the result was consistently mesmerizing: the bass strings remained crisp and present, the string feel comfortable but not floppy. Honestly, this Mistral blew us away, from Bortot’s refreshing aesthetic (check out the relief carved into the heelblock where it meets the sides) to his effective voicing techniques.

From Dana Bourgeois, a 2022 OM Signature Deluxe with an Aged Tone Sitka Spruce top and some exceptionally fine Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides. Koa bindings line the body of this Orchestral Model, and there’s a very lovely and subtle burst on the top, which in many ways complements the tonal palette of this instrument. The slightly wider spacing at the saddle makes it ideal for fingerstyle, though it can thrive in any playing style. A true Swiss Army knife of guitars.

Dana Bourgeois and co have nailed the recipe for a dynamite Dreadnought here: quick and responsive, lots of bark, with an easy playability and a classic look. This beau was built for the 2008 IBMA, number two of six, and comes to us with premium Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and a soft V neck that’s super easy to play. With a few years under its belt, this Bourgeois D-150 has opened up nicely, and we love the sweet flavor of the trebles, and the clean, refined bass response. That last detail helps separate this D-150 from other Dreads, giving the overall voice added clarity and definition.

Built for the 2019 Winter NAMM, so of course Dana Bourgeois and his team went out of their way to make this Dreadnought a showstopper. Not only that, but this is one of Dana’s Championship models—spec’d out just like the Dread Luke Lovejoy used to take first place at the 2018 Walnut Valley Flatpicking Championship with Sinker Mahogany back and sides and an Aged Tone Sitka Spruce top. That, along with torrefied brace stock and animal protein glue construction, makes for great balance across the registers and superb note definition. This is one you can really crank up the BPM on; no muddiness at high speeds here.
