1954 Martin D-28, Brazilian Rosewood/Spruce
Oh, the sweets to be had with a well played and wide awake Martin D-28. This beau comes from 1954–70 years young today–and has seen lots of musical action since then. We always love to see a guitar that hasn’t hidden in the shadows, but instead has been out and about and making music. We’ve got Spruce on top, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with some nice spiderwebbing in the figure, and a number of solid repairs from years of use. The top has the marks to prove it, and the neck is worn in with an instantly familiar feel.
Ready to step into a vintage Martin that’s seen lots of music, and is ready for even more? Give us a shout to schedule a live demo, or take it home on trial.

A great example of an early ’50s Martin D-28 that’s been played a lot over the years, and is in great playing shape for many more to come. This one comes to us from the period when Martin was still using Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, by the 1950s they were using Sitka Spruce tops. There are some repairs, see our specs tabs for more details, but our repair staff have gone over this instrument from tuners to tail to confirm a clean bill of health. 1951 is a good year with this beauty in your hands.

This guitar has diamonds on the soles of its shoes, or at least its fingerboard. From 1997, we have a Martin OM-42 PS (Paul Simon), number 207 out of 500. East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce, classic Martin appointments, and Paul Simon’s signature on the label and inlaid on the fingerboard extension. It could be the gravitas of Paul Simon’s association, but this OM-42 feels pretty dang special. An Indian Rosewood guitar that gives you a lot more than you’d expect: excellent response, clear, powerful, and quite frankly inspirational to play. Whether you’re a Paul Simon fan or simply a Martin OM fan, this guitar has a lot to offer.

A few years back, Martin ran a limited series of Golden Era models that were absolute powerhouses, and have since been followed by the established Authentic line (also great guitars!). Today we’ve got one such model, a D-28GE from 2000 that is accordingly wide awake and singing. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with Adirondack Spruce top, herringbone trim and zigzag backstrip, soft V neck with proper prewar girth, and open back Waverly nickel tuners on a squared off headstock. Slim playing weight under five pounds; forward-shifted and scalloped bracing.

In a word, gorgeous. Howard Klepper pulled off an excellent conversion job with this 2013 00-40 which began life in 1960 as a Martin 00-28G. Accordingly, quarter sawn Brazilian Rosewood with some delectable feathered figuring at the bout ends, with a new Red Spruce top and 14-fret neck. Klepper added 40-style Abalone trim along the top, as well as diamonds & snowflakes position markers, Rosewood bridge, and Ivoroid bindings. A light brown shade top finish pairs up with the richness of the Brazilian sides to a T.

Such a treat to visit with this Parlor model from Michi Matsuda. Not only does Michi manage to build a visually arresting design, he also does so while maintaining utmost attention to the voice of the instrument as well. This is a petite Parlor that very much punches up above its weight. The trebles in particular have real strength to them that grabbed us right out the gate. Michi’s inventive flair manifests here with tightly figured Bubinga back and sides, Bearclaw Spruce top, an elevated fingerboard, and one of this two-tone bridges comprised of a Rosewood-Ebony laminate. All this culminates at the headstock rendered in a stair-step pattern that’s reminscent to our eye of a Stauffer style headstock with the tuners along the bass side. All told, this 2015 Parlor from Michi Matsuda is a captivating example of when the bleeding edge of modern lutherie works–one-of-a-kind, powerful, and clear.

The late, great Lance McCollum has left us with an impressive body of work from terz guitars to double necks, harp guitars to wonderful flattops like this Slope D from 2007 in Sapele and Adirondack Spruce. Build weight is a slim 4lbs 4oz, which makes for an easy playing experience, and Lance outfitted this number with a slim neck profile and slotted headstock veneered with more gorgeously figured Sapele, plus gold Gotoh tuners. Scale length is 25 3/4” for added tension, pop, and power—all of which this McCollum has in spades—and a 1 13/16” nut for a little extra lefthand room. Herringbone trim throughout, plus Maple bindings to contrast with the Sapele and Ady.

Whoever said Koa doesn’t have depth and power hasn’t played this A69c Custom McIlroy. Not only does this all-Koa guitar pack some serious heft into the voice with a quick and lively string energy, but it manages to do so while looking good at the same time. Sycamore bindings plus Abalone rosette, top trim, and position markers are an excellent complement to the figured Koa, and the pinless bridge ties it all together. Additionally, this A69c has the added distinction of being McIlroy’s 1200th guitar–no small feat. If you want lots of power in an easy-playing package, it’s hard to go wrong with this 2019 A69c.

All the way from Ireland, this brand new McNally OM with Honduran Rosewood back and sides and Swiss Spruce top has got us all excited here at Dream Guitars. It is truly rare to see the meeting of two worlds in the realm of guitar be executed so well on every level: this guitar has obvious roots in traditional design, but also expands into the explorative nature of modern building. The satin finish feels sweet in hand, and doesn’t look too shabby either. Minimalist appointments allow the natural beauty and qualities of the guitar to speak for themselves. Pure magic.
