A big thanks to Michael Millard and his team at Froggy Bottom Guitars: this 2004 H-12 Deluxe is a dream machine for the fingerpicking guitarist! Gorgeously flamed Koa back and sides, check. Adirondack Spruce top, check. 12-fret neck for an extra dose of warmth and easy playability, check. Playing this guitar is a charged experience; the voice is crisp and energetic, and the projection is monolithic for its size.
The H-12 is one of Froggy Bottom’s more popular models, for obvious reasons. The setup is glass-smooth, and the H-12 can handle dropped tunings like a champ (we found some crackling blues in DADFAD to be particularly exquisite) thanks to the dry, articulate tone from all that beautiful Koa. As a member of the Froggy Bottom “Deluxe” family, this H-12 is bedecked with extra Abalone in the rosette and backstrip and binding the headstock–plus this one features an eagle scrimshawed into the heelcap! Perfect for a patriotic player, or anyone who appreciates top-notch craftsmanship.

Practically brand new, this 2014 Froggy Bottom H12-C Deluxe is itching to get down to the business of making great music. One of Froggy Bottom’s smaller bodies, the H12 is lightweight but bombproof, easy to play but robust enough for great projection. Thanks to the Madagascar Rosewood back and sides and Adirondack Spruce top, the guitar has good drive and a warm, rich tone that lends itself both to flatpicks or fingertips. Bound in Curly Maple and featuring a sparkling Abalone rosette and slotted Waverly tuners, this guitar will win many competitions on looks alone.
An instrument for which a lighter attack is preferred, the H12-C Deluxe has a great capacity for dynamic, nuanced voices, and would work well for a variety of applications, from singer-songwriter to Blues, and with a Venetian Cutaway you can reliably access the entire Ebony fretboard. If you’re looking for a new Froggy Bottom but the bank account can’t quite agree, this 2014 H12-C Deluxe is a dream come true.

When Michael Millard and his team are given free rein to explore new possibilities, flawless and powerful guitars are the result. The Froggy Bottom Featured D-12 we have in the store today is the product of those explorations and Millard’s fascination with a 1950’s Roy Smeck Gibson “Stage Deluxe” that belonged to a friend of his father. Millard describes that guitar as “haunting; the sonority in the wound strings [was] just beyond words,” and when he constructed this D-12 in East Indian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, he managed to achieve just that–a voice rich with resonance, sustain, and emotion. The construction is lightweight, but sturdy, and the soundbox offers great projection for flatpicking or fingerstyle. Millard’s penchant for 12-fret designs places the bridge lower on the body to allow the Adirondack Spruce to respond instantly to the strings’ vibrations. Curly Maple bindings and the smoky tobacco sunburst are a perfect counterpoint to the Abalone rosette and Ebony fretboard; the guitar is beautiful, from all angles. This guitar comes with the original TKL hardshell case.

Here we have a Froggy Bottom SJ in a stunning sunburst Adirondack Spruce top, and Mahogany back and sides. It is hard to describe the magic of a slope shoulder Dreadnought, they are more intimate, maybe even more delicate sounding than the standard Dread. Which isn’t to say that the slope shoulder isn’t fit for a bluegrass lineup, it has all the power for that, the slope just seems to handle fingerpicking and delicate passages better than its cousin. Froggy hit another home run with this one, they may have even knocked it out of the park. This SJ will blow you away with its sweet but powerful tone. Every string sings like a bird, full and clear. This will make a perfect “go to” guitar.

If we could have our way, we would have a Froggy Bottom guitar in every guitar players home. Froggies are that good, and they deserve it. This is the H-12 Deluxe model in East Indian Rosewoodback and side with a Sunburst Adirondack (Red) Spruce top. One fact that always astounds us about a Froggy Bottom guitar is just how much sound they are capable of putting out, even the small bodied models. Now, it is one thing to say a guitar is “Loud” many guitars can do that, but the true test is this; Can the guitar be loud and still have great tone? Across the board with every Froggy we have had, including this beauty, the answer is a resounding yes! As we expected, this H-12 packs a wallop, the bass is pure and buttery while the mids through the trebles are round and powerful balancing perfectly from one section to the next. Another stellar offering from one of our favorites.

Here we have a Froggy Bottom M model in Adirondack (Red) Spruce and highly figured Cocobolo Rosewood. There is something incredibly special about this froggy, and that is saying a lot about a company who in our opinion produce exclusively special instruments. This is a smaller bodied guitar, but strike the first note and you would never think it was anything less than a large bodied behemoth. Everything we threw at this guitar sounded lush, like velvet or butter, like a dream or a summer breeze. However you choose to describe the tone of this guitar, it isn’t going to be adequate. Do yourself a great favor and come in and play this thing.

We don’t often see a large body guitar from the Froggy Bottom crew, when we found out this one was coming in to the shop we had a pretty good idea that it was going to be special, and boy were we right. This is the F-12-DLX model in Adirondack (Red) Spruce and East Indian Rosewood. Red Spruce and East Indian Rosewood makes for a powerful combination, this guitar has power and headroom to spare, it will take what you put in to it with ease. That being said, the voice is beautiful and delicate if you want it to be, the bass will wow you with its presence and the mids through trebles join right in with warmth and evenness. Froggy Bottom is a house favorite here, we have yet to see a guitar from them that wasn’t stellar, this one holds up to that ideal and then some.

Froggy Bottom guitars build some of what we believe to be the best small bodied guitars around. They are lightly built and ready to respond to a light touch with a full and resonant tone. This is a Special Order C model built from Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce. It truly is a Special Order guitar, the wood choices are as good as it gets. This is also the first Froggy Bottom guitar to feature Glenn Carson’s intricate pearl engraving on the fingerboard and headstock. These inlays really put this guitar in another league. We love the whyte laydie look of this Froggy and think it will make a valuable addition to your collection.

From the Froggy Bottom Website: “This concert (Double O) size guitar is strong, responsive, and beautifully balanced. Intended for finger-style playing, it makes an exceptional choice for traditional ballad work and excels in the studio.” We couldn’t agree more. Balance is the thing with this A-12, it’s beautifully clear and articulate in every position. The 14.5″ lower bout is easy to hold and crafted from breathtaking Koa with premium flame, the likes of which is getting very hard to find, and it’s topped with Adirondack for power as well as clarity. The slotted headstock, intricate #7 inlays and the sailing ship scrimshaw make it uniquely sophisticated and there is a sunrise pickup included as well.
